NBA LIVE '95 & especially *NBA LIVE '96* were the 2 MegaDrive sport games that i've spent literally thousands of hours playing against my brother.
We even had a notebook exclusively for writing down the results from our matches as an historical archive !!!
We were writing who won , what was the score , who was the top scorer of the match , our players shooting % ratio , etc ...
Never again since then have i played a sport game with such devotion.

A friend and I shared a Genesis back in the day and played the hell out of it without ever playing a platformer, arcade game or RPG. It was all Joe Montana, Tommy Lassorda, NHLPA Hockey, etc. To me, the Genesis was a sports game machine. It wasn’t until the Smash Pack on the Dreamcast that I finally played Sonic, Golden Axe etc. and realized how much more there was to the Genesis library.

This brought back some fond memories. Fortunately I still have my original Genesis which was purchased in 1993 and still works great. I still have several of my favorite sports games and play them from time to time. My Top 10 Sport Faves are as follows:
    10. Mutant League Football
    9. PGA Tour III
    8. Rugby World Cup 95
    7. ATP Tour Tennis
    6. NBA JAM TE*
    5. Evander Holyfield Real Deal Boxing
    4. World Series Baseball 94*
    3. NFL Football 94 Starring Joe Montana*
    2. NHL97*
    1. Triple Play Gold*
All the titles with asterisks are carts of which I still have from when they were brand new and still work. I love the Genesis Triple Play games for the depth they brought to console baseball games, but hated what they became during the PC version years. The same is true for NHL.

I remember AVGN saying something like "if you have one baseball game why do you need to have so many others?" when talking about more variety of sports titles on Genesis vs. SNES. I remember playing an amazing golf game where one of the options was to select super ceramic golf clubs, which were the best choice for that game. I also remember an amazing baseball game where you had three stadiums to choose from, with incredible game play.

NFL Football 94 was the last real new title that I played with my dad back in the day. He decided that games were a little too complicated once the 32-bit generation came around. So I've definitely got some deep rooted nostalgia for Sports Talk 93, as we played both that and 94.
WWF Royal Rumble might be my most played game with my friends on the Genesis. It was the closest we could get to the button mashing fun of Wrestlefest, while having fresh enough rosters to feel somewhat current to what we'd see on TV.
World Series Baseball was likely my most played solo sports title on the Genesis. I was super into baseball back then, and having the real teams, players, and stadiums represented was welcome, along with a fun game engine under the hood.
I think Evander Holyfield Real Deal Boxing was the catalyst for my getting a Genesis. A friend of mine rented it, and the graphics and presentation were an absolute game changer for me.

No NHL by EA?! I wasn’t a Genesis owner but that’s one game I spent a lot of time with BITD with friends (specifically the 93 version).

A SOLID choice of games. Sports Talk 93 would have been my top choice. Greatest Heavy Weights 2nd. NBA Jame TE 3. NHL 94 4. Those 4 games ate up a TON of time!

Did not expect Joe Montana sports talk football at number 1. Had that game as a kid, but always preferred Madden 94 and Bill Walsh College Football.
I did like doing snow games tho, hearing the announcer say it’s beginning to snow on the 2nd play of the game with the field already covered was funny to me

PGA Tour Golf, wow that was an amazing game. I never got to play the Fifa soccer game featured here but I did have EA Sports FIFA International Soccer 96, loved it. Royal Rumble was my favorite game outright for a while when I was a kid. Great memories and I agree with a lot of your choices here.

I really like the 1995 season as that year had my favorite entries in EA Sports' series on the Genesis: NBA Live 95, Madden NFL 95, NHL 95, and FIFA Soccer 95 (the first FIFA game to include club teams from Europe and South America) were all awesome.

I love sports games, especially in that era. I have at least one of baseball, basketball, football, futbol and hockey on my Genesis. NFL Football '94 is one of my favorites, and I'm a latino guy that loves futbol above any other sport. WWF games were great too, at a time when the actual product was decent. And ISS Deluxe, I got it in Chile bootlegged (I did not know that was the case back then), and even though it's not as good as the SNES version, I still played the crap out of it.

Digitized speech usually takes up a lot of space. I wonder how big those Sports Talk Football carts were back then to be able to hold all of that speech.
Perhaps they were.... 40+ MEGA POWERRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!

I'd pick Madden '92 for football primarily because of the ambulance and also because I found the weather, particularly the snow, "pretty". I think it's also the only Madden gave I've ever played to this day.
I'd also like to mention World Series Baseball since I grew up in the Montreal area and it was the first baseball game that I ever played that let me play as the Expos in Olympic Stadium, instead of just a generic stadium as seen in Sports Talk Baseball (which had the MLBPA license but not the Major League Baseball license, so it had the players but no logos or real world stadiums).
The sports game I played the most on the Genesis was NHL '94, even though I never really followed hockey much in real life, since it's a fun pick-up-and-play title and the first NHL game to have both the real team names and the names of the players in the same game (plus some synthesized versions of the authentic organ music tunes played in certain arenas like "Here Come the Hawks" for the Chicago Blackhawks).

I'm from Europe, and despite "soccer" is not my piece of cake it's part of our culture, kind of...
Super kudos to you to have mentioned IssDeluxe. Must be more difficult for an American to appreciate "soccer" games, like for us your "football".
But you picked up the very best of the 16bit era. So many memories with that game. Did you know there's a code to have dogs instead of the referees? ;D
    Well done again Sglx!

Good choice to begin with the John Madden Football ‘91 menu theme while San Antonio’s David Robinson and Dennis Rodman take on Seattle’s Shawn Kemp (pre-drugs) and Detlef Schrempf from NBA Jam TE, and finish up with Hulk Hogan’s theme song on WWF Royal Rumble while Kim Nang and Fernando Gomez box in James Buster Douglas Knockout Boxing and San Francisco’s Steve Young throws to Terrell Owens for 30 yard touchdown vs. Green Bay Packers in Madden NFL 97/98.

Again, well done and thanks for showing sports games some love. There are really some great quality games here. I also agree with you 100% about modern sports games loosing their creativity. Another reason why I love being a retro gamer. I definitely see some games I have to add to my collection. Also another reason why I love physical media which allows me be be able to find these games, put them in the Genesis and play them, no update or internet connection required.

For Tecmo Bowl you gotta go with Tecmo Super Bowl III: Final Edition, got all the bells and whistles. NBA Live 95 is still considered one of the best basketball games ever made to this day, along with Coach K. World Series Baseball is still one of the best baseball games ever made. NHL 93/94 is just legendary, people who didn't like hockey were playing it.

Aw man. Sad to see no NHL 94. To me, that was the tightest playing Genesis sports game, but the whole series is super playable. But I'm glad you highlighted this genre. I've always had a soft spot for 16-bit sports games and love that I can still pick those out of the bargain bin on the reg.

These are my top 10. Great video SLX I played all your choices and do agree there ALL great games.
