Some years ago I (from Germany) visited friends in Spokane WA. Wanna go to a concert in the city hall friday night? I was asked. Sure. What is it? Pat Metheny. Oh yeah! Great! We went there and it was just Pat Metheny with the COMPLETE ORCHESTRION on stage. How can one be so lucky?
Pat Metheny is nothing short of a musical genius.I did see Orchestrion live several years ago in NYC (Carnegie Hall I believe). Amazing to say the least. At first, I didn't realize at the time I purchased the tickets that he was performing alone promoting this new record. I've been a fan for a long time and was looking forward to see a full band. Happy I did see him. I also managed to see Pat perform at a rare engagement near my home in New Yorks Hudson Valley. He played at a place called "The Falcon". A small venue (bar/restaurant) which was converted from an old barn. THAT, was definitely one of if not the best live performances I have ever seen in my life. He is so humble, yet such an amazing artist.
George Kalmancy all what you say is so true about PM. I have an amazing story about him after the SON tour gig, when they were in Lisbon Coliseu...the man is unreal.
I saw PM at UCLA last October, 2023, little did I realize that he was performing a one man retrospective and I was utterly disappointed. It felt more like a recital and my friends were falling asleep. I felt bad for my friends, who I persuaded to buy tickets to see PM. The next time PM is in town, I will inquirer to insure it is not a one man show format. He did play some orchestration material toward the latter part of the show and that was the highlight of the evening. The lesson I learned was to try and make sure you know what type of performance to expect the artist to perform. Maybe, research some recent reviews to get an indication of what the show should consist of. I did that after the fact, and found out that PM had performed in San Diego the night before and an unhappy heckler in the front row had to be removed from the show because he was so disappointed with the one man format. I hope this helps. Pat is still and will always be my main man. I listen to his music everyday!!!
That's gotta be the most magical place with all those toys :) Its like would you even want to come out? Kudos to Pat Metheny a heavenly artist. How can anyone not like him. He is one great phenomenal artist!
You are my hero. I just cried out of sheer excitement watching this. You enhance my purpose in this life and expand my dreams. You show me where the bar line is set, so that I will never lose my lust for endless musical exploration and euforic musical moments shared. We all have so much potential within ourselves and you show us that nothing is impossible. From the bottom of my heart - thank you Pat, for all the inspiration you give me on my journey. I hope that our paths will cross some day, if not you will still be with me and for that I am truly grateful.
As always, Pat is an innovator. Wether you like it or not, he is still growing. I am an visual artist in my sixties, and trying to continue to grow and improve, otherwise we should just hang it up for good! Thank you Pat, for decades of you and your band, that have inspired my artistic journey!
This guy is brilliant and in a league of his own. I read an article in the arts section of the New York Times some years ago and the complexity in which he spoke about music was akin to a physics professor gushing about quantum physics. I love the cadence of his music. The undercurrent of passion, emotion and precision. The many moving parts that come together so beautifully. I love that many of his songs are climatic. That they are sometimes three differents songs in one. I often wonder what he's thinking, how he comes up with
Yes! Antonia and to the end of the world immediately come to mind. I hear new things in most every song each time I listen. Always a wonderful mind journey.
This is Pat communicating with himself. Nice dialogue. Genius as always. And for those concerned about a musician playing with mechanical band mates, its just a project, not the rest of his life... lol
It is a pretty unique way of expressing music. Every part comes right from Pat, and is not filtered through the interpretation of other live players. Like everything else Pat has done, it's just another step down his musical path and will be the thing of the moment, for a limited time only. Then he will move on to another new expression. Any true Metheny fan expects Metheny's music to change constantly. This is but one reason why he stands miles above most other musicians, who find their groove and never stray far from it. By way of comparison, name one big name rock band that is still together more thn 20 years after hitting fame and fortune, AND is making new hits on a regular basis to this day. Musicians that can keep it fresh and interesting and don't fall back on their own catalog of standards and cliches are one in a million, or more rare than that.
Just learned about this and....... This........ Is......... Like....... SOOOOOOOO GOOD!!!!! That's what music is!!!!! Thanks for sharing this....it's AMAZING!
Viajante de outra galáxia ,você escreve uma partitura para cada instrumento?Que talento privilegiado ! Maravilhoso! Como funciona sua mente? Será que consegue desliga-la para dormir?👽👽👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🚀🚀🚀🏆🏆🛁
Never heard of Pat Metheny till someone gave me tickets to see The Pat Metheny Group at the Tower theater in Philadelphia. He did Are You Going with me. Was utterly blown away. Some of the licks and runs and his technique, I was totally blown away. His mastering of the guitar . Had me giggling snd shaking my head in amazinment. Well! He sucked..just kidding. He still continues to blow me away over 40 yrs today. Thank you Pat for coloring my life opening me up to a whole new world of music 🎶
Kerry Maxwell I totally agree, and was thinking the same when watching this, although Zappa did an amazing job in pushing the envelope with traditional orchestration, although it really did seems to frustrate him not to have the control and exactness of what this system could offer.. Also, by the looks of things the Synclavier was at the hub of this, so Zappa would fit right in... I saw the Synclavier in the corner or the Orchestra EPK video, don't know if Pat still uses it..
Well, Frank could've used the "machine" to make incredible art, like The Grand Wazoo, or not so great elevator jazz, like Hot Rats. The choice was always his and his alone.
Love it. I listen to Pat more than any other musician. (I do wonder whether this is what you do when your band members tick you off somehow.) Anyway, brilliant!
The real musicians of today are Corea, McLaughlin, Ponty, and Di Meola. Truly skilled musicians. And if one deserves a special note it is Metheny's "Orchestrion" project. This work combining musician inventors is a masterpiece of beauty and innovation that to this day remains unsurpassed. Pat takes you on a journey that will keep you guessing what emotions he taps into for an hour and every emotion is one of wonder. These are the men aligned with Bach, Beethoven and Brahms.
When I thought I've heard his BEST MUSIC. NO I HAVEN'T THIS SONG IS AMAZING. HAVE TO LISTEN TO MUCH MORE TO DETERMINE IF THIS IS HIS FINEST. SIMPLY KEEP DOING WHAT U DO SO WELL PLAYING MUSIC
WOW, very innovative!! Also, your claim to fame is your sound...I can spot your tone in 2 or 3 notes...you've made your mark for sure! I would love to see a reunion with Lyle...
thankS very much pour cette video .. je comprends mieux l’organisation très complexe de cette "spécial orchestrion".. tout est vraiment impressionnant … et suis très intriguée par les touches du piano qui s’amusent toutes seules !!! (°.°)
With all the artwork that Eno is making with colored lights, I would love to be immersed in an environment created by Eno and Metheny. A blissful place where none of us would ever want to leave.
Are bands obsolete? Nope, unless you're a contemporary visionary genius with both a classical preparation and a look to the future, producing intellectual, yet accessible, beautiful, creative, original, unique music like no one ever. (oh and with loads of cash on hand)

Metheny performed at The Falcon!? Was it a sea of people? I can't believe I missed seeing his name on their lineup!

One of my favorite musicians of all time !
Does that mean that there might be a Ben Tankard guitar album at some time? 🤗🙏🏽💥🙏🏽💥
Pure brilliance in its finest form. Pat is unparalleled when it comes to living musicians.
That's gotta be the most magical place with all those toys :) Its like would you even want to come out? Kudos to Pat Metheny a heavenly artist. How can anyone not like him. He is one great phenomenal artist!

Pure genius!!!! Pat can pretty much do any kind of music, and make it his own voice!!!
As always, Pat is an innovator. Wether you like it or not, he is still growing. I am an visual artist in my sixties, and trying to continue to grow and improve, otherwise we should just hang it up for good! Thank you Pat, for decades of you and your band, that have inspired my artistic journey!
I can't get over how much this reminds me of Animusic. Brilliantly done!

Ahhhhh que maravilloso!!! Me fascina!! Gracias!!!
Un lujo...obra maestra
Just a madman living the dream.
As much I love what Pat does with this rig, it's a shame Frank Zappa didn't live to get his hands on this contraption.
Kerry Maxwell I totally agree, and was thinking the same when watching this, although Zappa did an amazing job in pushing the envelope with traditional orchestration, although it really did seems to frustrate him not to have the control and exactness of what this system could offer.. I'm late to this party. Just discovered this video and immediately wondered what it would have been like if Frank Zappa had had something like this.
I was thinking the same thing as I was watching this.
Well, Frank could've used the "machine" to make incredible art, like The Grand Wazoo, or not so great elevator jazz, like Hot Rats. The choice was always his and his alone.
Frank was another planet, he did music not empty gimmicks.
This....is why I love Pat Metheny.

Its really a crazy and fine musical mechanic.
Truly great ... also more than a little bit nuts !
Just his childhood dream bro.
Incredible
WOW, very innovative!! Also, your claim to fame is your sound...I can spot your tone in 2 or 3 notes...you've made your mark for sure! I would love to see a reunion with Lyle...

tu sei un folle Dio!!! il migliore!
I would like to try this room... wow.
Ho la la tout ces mécanismes:) Pat, tu brilles:) depuis longtemps déjà! C'est une pure vibration d'amour de lumière,éternel:) Big Up :) Namasté.
Woah I had no idea this existed. Phenomenal. Would love a deep dive into how it works…
Amazing…
This was really cool live. Love the group too tho.
It was clear from many of his Group performances that simple mortal performers were a severe limitation on his arrangement ambitions :)
j'adore dommage que le morceau ne soit en entier
still love it!!
good 💯
thankS very much pour cette video .. je comprends mieux l’organisation très complexe de cette "spécial orchestrion".. tout est vraiment impressionnant … et suis très intriguée par les touches du piano qui s’amusent toutes seules !!! (°.°)
With all the artwork that Eno is making with colored lights, I would love to be immersed in an environment created by Eno and Metheny. A blissful place where none of us would ever want to leave.
IT'S ALIVE!!!!!
Rock ON 🖤
How to make my midi backing track more interesting :) But joke aside great performance, and execution on the idea
just beyond the rality
What are those items that get triggered at 2:02?
Don Holm Guitarbot, pretty cool aren't they??
A música de Pat Metheny é realmente algo espiritual...
so this is how the sequencer physical looks like
daaaaamn bwoy
2:00 what is that instrument? it sounds very interesting!
Many inventors were involved. Pat just supplied the skill of orchestration.
Wow...
Are bands obsolete? Nope, unless you're a contemporary visionary genius with both a classical preparation and a look to the future, producing intellectual, yet accessible, beautiful, creative, original, unique music like no one ever. (oh and with loads of cash on hand)
Genius.
Genial
Genius 22 century
凄すぎる!
sounds like the pat metheny group, minus the group.
+John -- in the future there may be a robot playing that guitar. Long life, Pat Metheny.
Sad
Or with a new group, one entirely dedicated to his whims and wishes.
...when you're pat metheny and it's after 2010 and your videos are 360p and it's after many years later and it's still 360p
He isn't from here, he is a alien from other planet or is the bigest genius, incredible.
Just his childhood dream, bro.
Das ist Gut
