- This video depicts a performance work Taualuga: The Last Dance, 2006 by Samoan/Japanese artist Shigeyuki Kihara. It was presented at Te Papa in February 2012 for the opening of art exhibition Collecting Contemporary and was first time it had been performed in New Zealand.
Taualuga: The Last Dance, 2006 which exists as both a performance work and a video work, responds to a series of historical photographs taken by New Zealand photographers including John Alfred Tattersall, Thomas Andrew and the Burton Brothers during the colonial administration of Samoa by New Zealand between 1914 till 1962.
Using the principles of the classical dance as a form of storytelling, Kihara’s Taualuga: The Last Dance, 2006 is ‘a celebration and a tribute’ she said, ‘ to the many leaders and people of Samoa and their resilience in their struggle for independence’. It is also a lament, ‘that acknowledges the changes and losses for Samoan culture through the process of colonisation’.
The video also features commentary from the artist that provides a broader context for Taualuga: The Last Dance, 2006.
