Mahalo, Janelle!
Woohoo! Done! So psyched.
Thanks Janelle, this is super useful :) hope you are enjoying austin
It was so refreshing to hear ‘I don’t care about color analysis and I will wear what I want’. 🥰 I see and I pick fabrics that stir me and make me happy. I love color. I’m more blues and pinks and lilacs, but I love black and white and creams and greens also. I love your choices for you and I think you look awesome in the fabrics and styles you wear. I just bought a drop waist dress pattern today and can’t wait to make one also. 🥰👍❤
Colour work advice for the colours you have...take a photo of the two balls on your phone and change it to a black and white photo. If the two colours haave a good contrast, your colour work will work really well. If the colours are ver similar, you'll lose the pink bows in the strong orange colour.
That’s such a good tip!! I hadn’t thought about the contrast so thank you, I’ll definitely do this!
Please make a video showing you making that Japanese shirt! I went to Japan in April and went to the shops you suggested and bookstores and found pattern books. I already made some culottes that look like a skirt from them. Thanks for showing your journey with Japanese patterns. I felt courageous because I saw you do it.
Having seen your previous knits, I think you would be able to handle the colorwork jumper. It would be a fun challenge. For your first stranded colorwork, however, I would do the bows in only one color. That way you would be alternating between just two colors, the background and the design. Thanks, Janelle.
Totally agree with this! Three colors is so much harder than two
Came here to say the same! I wouldn’t alternate the bow colors if I was just learning the technique. But two color standard colorwork is actually easier than it seems!
The McCalls pattern you have may be the maternity version of McCalls 6315 which is the same pattern but the pleats start mid way between the bust and the waist and is a bit more fitted. It has the same bow detail and different sleeves and is also comes as a jump suit. I loved this dress and I think I made 2 or 3 versions. I just thought it was so funny that this dress popped up it brought back some lovely memories. I think I got this in the early 1990's. I'm sure you will love this dress too it's a lovely summer dress.
I agree. It’s definitely a maternity pattern. Just found it online. That changes the entire structure of the garment.
@@janeseemann2527hmm. I wonder if there might be some thinking about a baby going on? What a wonderful mom she would be💕
Quick, tiny bit of advice about dying fabrics black: don't! Lol, as an elder goth who sews and has tried dying both natural and synthetic fabrics black for years... It'll never come out as deep and dark as something that is made or manufactured black. And even if precautions are taken, the dye will bleed in the wash --yes, even after several washes-- and get into other garments. So, i'd suggest starting out with lacy fabric that's already black. It may save you so much time and trouble.
I hope that's helpful! I'm a huge fan of your channel and i love, love, love your style (although i'd personally make so many of your picks in black, haha). I hope you're having a fabulous time in Texas!
I just keep thinking that I wouldn't want to be in the Texas heat and sun in black. Lol.
SO excited to see your Willa dress! I’m very tempted by the Liberty fabric you used 🥰
For the knit sweater, you could knit it up plain then do a duplicate stitch with the colour! It’s kind of like cross stitch/embroidery vibes and much easier than trying to switch colours and do a pattern (unless you want that kind of challenge)
Hiya Janelle! I’m a relatively beginner knitter (I started in 2022) and I absolutely love colourwork knitting - don’t be too intimidated by it, it’s mostly just the knit stitch. And people do fancy things where they hold two yarns in one hand etc, I just drop the colour I’m not working with and then pick it up later, it’s definitely slower but sooo easy.
I would definitely recommend you choose one colour for the bows for your first colourwork project. This will mean you don’t have to worry about long floats (long lengths of yarn at the back side of the knitting), and having shorter floats makes tensioning much easier.
Can’t wait to see how it turns out!
Ahh I didn’t think of that! That’s really helpful to know, thank you ☺️
Yes, as an ex- knitter for spotlight. The tension is the hardest part.
I know you are remodeling the downstairs of your home for your sewing room but I love where you are sewing now. So much light, absolutely beautiful.
AWESOME looking forward to seeing your fashions🎉🎉🎉🎉 14:54
Engineering Knits has done some great videos on vintage colour work.
Just recently found your channel. I'm a beginner at sewing, and your videos make me so excited to learn and make beautiful things ❤
I love your sewing plans! I’m excited to see what you come up with… Janelle, I know you love your burnt orange, peach, sage etc and I heard you say you don’t care about colour palettes etc…but I would love to see you in a delft blue dress…I think it would look lovely with your fair hair! Do you like blue? It would be something out of left field I know but I was just looking at your rack of me made clothes and there is no blue! Enjoy Texas!😊
I love all your ideas for your winter/summer clothes. Color work in knitting is not that hard, sometimes it's annoying but, not hard. You should try watching videos on that, it will teach you a lot. Wish I could see you while you were in Texas, but I live in Arkansas. Have a beautiful time in America.
Can you please do a sew along for the back less version of the molly goddard dress? Those ruffles and drop waist are a perfect pairing in that style and it would look great in the floral cotton or a solid ...
Omg so honoured to see my Pansy dress pop up in this video! That Liberty fabric is soooo dreamy 😍
Thanks for sharing! Looks like many lovely projects!
I adore the Japan pattern book styles & I am also loving the return of the 1920’s drop waist dresses once again! We revived drop wait dresses, balloon skirts, lace & bows in the 80’s! 🌷💝💮
Also, I did color analysis when it was the rage in the 80’s & contrary to many guidelines, I always advised that both the colors black & white are universal colors that anyone can wear & make it work with the right makeup & complimentary colors!
Black & white to me are like non-color colors!🖤🤍
Knitter here: colorwork is soooo easy. You’ll do it and immediately think “really, that’s it? that’s so easy!l
I hope so!!
@@RoseryApparel But to add to that, colorowork with three separate colors in a single row (which you would have if you alternated the colors of the bows) is not what I would recommend for a first time colorwork project... Doing it that way would also give you really long floats (the yarn you're not using on the back) which is another yarn management challenge.
Couldn't send you the link directly for some reason so I put it in a comment. The dress itself is probably not something you would wear, but the pleat technique would look great with that fabric.
The bow sweater is so cute!! Colorwork knitting seems intimidating but isn't super difficult once you practice it just a little bit, I'm sure you can do it! A recommendation though, I wouldn't recommend alternating the colors of the bows just because it is very difficult to do 3 color colorwork and try to get the tension to remain consistent. If you want the challenge, by all means go for it! But it's something I tend to avoid and I knit colorwork fairly regularly
Love the open back dress, thinking of how it might incorporate a built in bra. Is the McCall's a maternity dress?
I forgot you live in the opposite side of the world 😂. Here is hot summer coming. Hi from Varna, the sea capital of Bulgaria, Eastern Europe.
I love all of your fabrics and look forward to seeing all of your videos. Texas is definitely hot in summer when visiting family in Dallas. My car's The temperature gauge read 115° F, so stay cool and use plenty of sunscreen.
I love the idea of figuring out out my season but I’ve been told I’m 3 different seasons so. . . I’ve figured out that I need saturation in color-or white/black. Pale colors just don’t do it. It’s hard-I love soft colors but they are never good for me. OTOH, I’ll buy autumn colors and feel fine about it tho it is the one season I have never been diagnosed as being. It is also the one that I wanted to be diagnosed as being. So I avoid soft baby pastel colors, and I can wear anything I want except for yellow. Maize is about the only kind of yellow that works.
I really don’t care about color analysis either. 🤭❤
Everything you make is always great, I recently found your channel again and can't stop watching and catching up. Have you ever done a video going thru your closet and showing everything you still own that you've made? I think that would be a fun video.
Beautiful fabric and lovely yarn. I am looking forward to seeing all the items once you have finished them. I have never sewn a garment, and I am a big Lady, Up to what size do your sewing patterns go and, do you send to the UK too.? Not only that, but I love knitting, and I adore the yarn colours you h ave chosen.
You always inspire me to plan out and accomplish new projects! I just finished the shirred Rosa dress after planning it out in my head for 2 years! Your videos make it so easy to do! Thank you 🩷✨
Thanks for sharing and enjoy Texas Janelle. Love your sewing plans. ❤
Some beautiful plans on your list. I can't wait to see the finished dresses.
The Willow dress will be perfect for the Texas weather. I use to do color analysis when I was a beauty consultant. Black always looks good on everyone especially blondes. You will appreciate light, cotton dresses in our southern weather.
I have that same Liberty fabric! I made the Lyra dress by Tilly and the Buttons and its wonderful 🤗
Oh lovely! It’s such beautiful fabric 😍
I totally agree, about not caring about of color analysis!
You’ll definitely be able to do the colourwork sweater, it looks gorgeous! I recommend watching nimbleneedles video on fair isle, it helped me figure out how to do the yarn overs and the like. I hold both yarns in one hand without the knitting thimble for my first fair isle project and it looks lovely! Would also recommend to just do a testswatch in which you knit first 1x1 (everything stockinette just switch up the colours), then 2x2, 3x3, 4x4, 5x5 etc. In that way you can practice with your tension and how to catch your floats without having to look at a pattern yet.
Like the rest, I would advise to limit yourself to two colours, it will make your life waaay easier.
That’s really helpful advice! I’ll do that. Thank you for taking the time to share 🧡
I hope you're having a great time in Texas. I look forward to seeing your sewing tutorial. It's interesting to see how other people knit and sew. The jumper looks very cute. I would suggest not to use cream yarn with alternating pink and terracotta bows as you need a strong contrast between the colours for colourwork. A pink jumper with terracotta colourwork would, I think, work best. X
Colourwork yoke sweaters are addictive :) I am sure you will find helpful information about colourwork/standed knittint/fair isle from Craftsy :)
PLEASE make the Molly Goddard dress with the black fabric. That is STUNNING.
love your take on colour analysis! so dumb just wear what you love! but black does look great you xx
I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels that way 😂
Welcome to Austin! Hope you enjoy!
Thank you!! We are loving it here!
How much fabric do you usually buy when you see something you like? 😅
Usually around 3 metres is a good amount to make most garments for me. I’ve shared how to create a fabric amount ‘cheat sheet’ in this video that you might find helpful ☺️ ua-cam.com/video/BzqHv8fCMM4/v-deo.htmlsi=yAtQBru8OqNN1Lan
Hello Janelle! I am somewhat behind watching some of your videos since you returned from Japan. Health issues, selling our home in Gawler, relocating to Adelaide during January, currently renting our son and daughter in law's home near the sea, (so convenient and lucky for us) while he is on a 3 year RAAF posting to Texas (US). We have just purchased another home nearby and will be moving again soon after settlement. Such stress with moving twice in 6 months, but you would know all about that. I so enjoyed this video tour of your new home, and hearing about your revovation plans. With your interior design degree and multitude of skills I can see it will be a labour of love. Love your temporary sewing space while you turn that magnificent underground space in to your studio, and Matt's current workspace build. Your excitement is infectious, and In can't wait to see more progress videos. Now to catch up with your sewing videos that I have sadly missed. Thank you so much Janelle, for all your creativity, and inspiring education! . The jumper you plan to knit in those colours is definitely you. BWM has fabulous colours in their yarns. You are going to be busy with your Austin summer sewing, according to my son, the heat is biting hot in Dallas right now. Enjoy your trip!🐾🥰 PS Janelle, your Japan cross stitch a day project looks so beautiful hanging on your wall. I have taken advantage of your Craftsy offer - thank you
I love the ideas and inspiration! I wish I felt comfortable wearing a dropped waist and/or open back like those shown. As a knitter I always love hearing your knitting plans. I just finished a cardigan in BWM Copper and LOVE it! I am a novice at colourwork too but have tried some small projects. Andrea Mowry has some UA-cam videos about tensioning colourwork that I found helpful. Also you might want to do a swatch to practice, and test your colour combos. Good luck!
Beautiful fabrics, without exception! For what it's worth, I think the black fabric will retain the heat even if you make the backless dress, so perhaps a lighter colour might be more comfortable in Austen? Just a thought. I love broderie anglaise and really want to buy some for myself, but I have quite a few projects in the queue already, so I'm trying to resist the temptation for the moment... 😬 Have an amazing month in Texas! 😊
I LOVE the idea of that black backless dress!! It's stunning!
And btw, colorwork knitting is not hard...it's just stockinnete after all! Just watch some videos on how to manage the floats, and you'll be good to go. I'd recommend starting with a two-colour design, bc knitting with three or four strands at the same time does get more fiddly, although it is not impossible. After some practice, I've knitted colorwork sweaters for myself and my daughter with four colors simultaneously succesfully😊
a tip for colorwork-look up “color dominance,” and pay attention to it as you work. It basically means always picking up your pattern color (the bows here) in the same manner (usually from underneath the background color) and it will make a noticeable difference in how your finished garment looks!
I'm excited to see the pleated dress with the bedsheet! I'm currently on vacation in Japan and picked up a stripped white/yellow floral fabric too and I can't decide what to make just yet. I even saw the last bit of the patchwork printed fabric you made the skirt from! Very tempting to get some but not quite my style
You are brave in trying out new patterns.Well done Janelle!! As a sewer for many years, I'm always hesitant when it comes to new patterns but thankyou for ideas.
Enjoy your time in Texas, U will love it.. They have large thrift stores that U can check out.
Thanks for sharing Rosie Caldwell with us! I'm excited to try out her dress pattern in some back rayon with pink floral sprigs printed on
Hi Janelle! Excited to hear you'll start gardening! I learned a lot from Charles Dowding and Huw Richards here on UA-cam. They're so generously giving from all their knowledge and experience. So that's my tip for you. Have fun in the garden! /Linda in Sweden
I have a black broiderie anglaise dress that is very close to the pansy pattern. It doesn't have a defined waist (it is more like the relaxed version of the dress you've made), has long puff sleeves, and it is a tied V-neck in the front. It's one of my favorite summer dresses ever, so I'm 100% behind that idea.
Always so fun to see your project plans..I never have the patience of anything but love to see anyway..my plans are always so much more simple..right now my plans is gathered skirt in blue and white stripes, a tomato girl top, and a tote bag with cats on..all is from scrapfabric I found at the thrift store.
That dress pattern you are planning for the Liberty fabric looks stunning.
We lived in Austin and you're so right that it will be hot!! I found that I rarely would even wear darker colors because they actually absorbed the heat and I felt hotter! Maybe that's in my head, but it's real with roofs and I think it works that way with clothes, too!
Everything you make is always so adorable. I love how much your channel has grown! I've been following you for a few years. You don't have to follow any color rules because you know exactly what you love and it always works! ❤
Great sewing plans and fabrics! 💖💖💖 Enjoy Texas the heat and food while you're here.
I'm a knitter who started to sew. The tricky bit with colour work is tension. One tip is to change to a bigger size needles. I make sure to catch floats (the thread behind the fabric that's not in use) every third knit stitch and I stretches the knitted fabric on the needle to even out any "bad" tension every inch or so. Another thing is to be consistent with the thread that's closest to the fabric is going to be the dominant colour (if you knit continental). All of the dresses looks amazing. I like to bye so much fabric and lock the door and just knit and sew and only occasionally go out for an adventure in the woods and mountains once in a while.
Great video. I look forward to seeing the results. With the stripe fabric i saw a fantastic video on a stripe dress that looked so cool with pleats. I'll try to find it again and send it to you. Hope that's ok.
Thanks for sharing all your beautiful ideas an fabrics! I made a drop waist skirt once, I think I used a fitted skirt pattern for the top part but folded the darts away by cutting up th pattern and spreading it appart. The lower part of the skirt consisted of several A-lined panels that was sewn together and then slightly gathered at the top befor attaching it to the top part. It was so swishy and lovely!
A suggestion for your knitted jumper, an easier way to get that lovely pattern is to actually embroider it on top of the jumper when it’s finished. You make the stitches in the knit stitches which makes it look as it’s a knitted pattern, Hope you understand what I mean. I have done that on a little jumper for my daughter, a whole little story with people, animals and a house. Such fun!
Would love to see a little more knitting content on this channel! All your makes are so inspiring, and the occasional video on knitting would be so fun to see. Hope you’re having the best time in Austin 😁
When you held up that beautiful broderie anglaise fabric, I thought “a blouse would be perfect for that.” I love the pattern you chose.
I really enjoy seeing all of your choices. I’ve worked for Lincraft and Spotlight before but I often struggle with pairing fabrics and patterns. I’ve been sewing since I was 8 years old. I still remember the first dress I made without any help when I was 12 in the late 80s 😊It was a beautiful pale blue and white seersucker stripe sleeveless dress with a button up front, dropped waist and gathered skirt. I wish I’d kept it as I’m sure my 19yr old daughter would wear it now that style is back in fashion.
Your content is so inspiring. I’m grateful UA-cam suggested your channel a couple of months ago - I don’t know how I didn’t find your channel sooner.
Hi Janelle. I noticed that you wore a black top in a recent video and I thought it really suited you. I can't wait to see your black creations 😊
Your life and plans are so interesting, look forward each Sunday to see what your up too. Loved the fabrics and pattern match today. Enjoy the trip to Austin ❤❤
The open backed dresses and the drop waist skirts sound exciting projects. Maybe you could also make a dropped waist dress.😊
I'm so glad you mentioned Rosie Caldwell! I love her videos and style, can't wait to see all your makes!
Be sure to take a warm wrap with you to Austin. You will experience lots of chilly A/C.
Love, love, love the dress with the multi layers and different fabric.
You will want to wear sandals in the Texas heat. Thick soles is a must. I live in Tennessee which has a humid atmosphere whereas Texas is more of a dry heat.
Welcome to Texas! It’s very hot here in Houston. Have you found any fabric stores in Austin?
Thank you! Yes I have gone to a few fabric shops and there will be a video all about them soon ☺️
I look forward to seeing it when you’re ready to post it
So excited to watch these projects come to life. Hello from Oregon, USA
Interesting plans. Can’t wait to see all the tutorial videos 🤩
Can you share the bow jumper pattern please xx
The bow knit and everything I’ve mentioned in this video is linked in the description 😊

Hello Janelle. Do you know the Horror Vacui brand dresses? You will love them.
Yes, and I’m obsessed!!
Hi Janelle, what a lovely plans you will do in the winter/summer😉. Have a great time in Texas, together.
Greeting from Desiree 🇳🇱
Thanks Desiree 🧡
Wonderful projects! ✨
Thanks for the video and the ideas you gave me. Love all the fabrics you showed us.
Thank you for watching 🧡
I'm in the austin area, and it's already so brutally hot out. Your fabrics are so pretty!
It’s soo hot. I can’t imagine what it will be like in a couple of months time!
I probably wouldn't recommend alternating bow colors for your first colorwork - if stranded colorwork, you'll just have longer floats and a bulkier section. You could do the detail above in one color and the bows in the other. I find colorwork knitting to be much easier than it seems - just be sure to watch your tension and you should be good - good luck!
Exciting plans Janelle x
❤❤❤hope uou are enjoying Austin.
Thanks Pat! I’m having such a lovely time 😊
You're gonna be so hot in Texas lol!
I'm excited to see what you'll think of a part of the US
It’s sooo hot! I’m glad I’m here now and not in a months time. It must get unbearable 😳
I am located near Austin and girl it is so hot already this year. It’s been around 105 daily so far. It’s only gonna get hotter from here. I highly suggest the open back dress. Welcome to Texas! I love following you and all your sewing projects are just beautiful.
Aw thank you, that means a lot 🧡 Yep, we’ve been here almost 4 weeks already and it’s sooo hot!! I can’t imagine what the middle of summer must be like here
