How to Japanese Style Inn [Ryokan]

  • A ryokan (旅館) is a type of traditional Japanese inn that originated in the Edo period (1603-1868), when such inns served travelers along Japan's highways. They typically feature tatami-matted rooms, communal baths, and other public areas where visitors may wear yukata.
Ryokan are difficult to find in Tokyo and other large cities because many are expensive compared to hotels, and Japanese people increasingly use hotels for urban tourism. Nonetheless, some major cities do have reasonably priced ryokan, with some costing as little as $40 a night. However, ryokan are more typically located in scenic areas, such as in the mountains or by the sea, and in recent years many ryokan have been redeveloped to their original style particularly by resort chain Hoshino Resorts, whose first ryokan opened in Karuizawa in 1914.

Hope you guys enjoyed this one! :) This was taken like 1.5 months ago so it was during a break from the odigo47. Had such a blast relaxing with my mom, who came to visit me and my extended family. If you guys didn't know, my mom, Maggie Minenko was a famous Japanese pop singer when she was only 18 years old! You can look her up on UA-cam or the google her name if you are interested :) I think you have to search her name in katakana, マギーミネンコ

I recommend not going to the outdoor bath during winter. Trust me I learned the hard way cause I ended up catching a cold. Other than that I do like the outdoor bath during Sakura season cause when they fall then end up in the bath.

You were probably already sick. You can't actually catch a cold from cold weather.

      I am a Japanese.
I have been outdoor bath during winter hundred times so far, but it has never have happened like that.
      Or did yo get YU-ATARI(温あたり)?
It depends how you use onsen.

We are always "sick", we have all sorts of organisms living inside us. The cold affects our immune system, which allows these organisms to make us sick.

Nice Ryokan, it seems very quiet and relaxing, not crowded by a lot of people. Your mother is very beautiful, and also your grandma was so adorable on that massage chair, hahaha

Great video, Chris! Your mom is beautiful. :). We have family reunions in South Carolina (I live in South Jersey) every other year. This year was the 50th. I've been going since I was a baby. Sadly, a lot of the older folks have passed away, so it's not as much fun as it once was. I enjoyed seeing your grandmother, she was really cute hanging out in that massage chair. :). Also, you have the *best* laugh. It never fails to make me smile. I was only disappointed that we didn't get to hear the audio of you singing with your mom. ;)

That song "Namida no Kawa" is in my phone! Your mom was a pretty good singer more than just an idol though I was too young to know that at that time. Much much later I got her album on CD, and I realized how good she was. Thanks for sharing this video of your wonderful family!
