  • I bought two old Chevys from a junkyard that is crushing out, the first is a 1959 impala 4 door hardtop, also known as a flattop, and the other is a 1961 Chevy Biscayne 4 door sedan, which has a 235 inline 6 cylinder with a 3 speed on the column, the motor is not stuck so I hope to have it running in a few days. In addition, I have been given permission to pull any parts I want off of cars that are destined to be crushed, so before they are gone forever, I have one last chance to save any usable parts. No contact info will be given for the yard location, owner's info, etc. No one is allowed in, so please don't waste your time by asking or emailing. HOWEVER, if you see any parts in the video you need, and if the vehicle is marked to be crushed, send me an email and I will do my best to pull parts before the vehicles get smashed.
    Thanks for watching!

Good eye on that Plymouth, definitely something special. And you’re 100% right. Hoarding cars like that is a death sentence to basically all of them. Glad to see guys getting out there to rescue some of them. I saw a 49-50 Ford in the background.. sad deal. One of my favorites. Also sad to see the 65 Chevy’s going to the crusher.

Excellent message on hoarding and selling. If you're going to hoard cars, have a game plan. Keep prices reasonable. Too many yard owners think they're sitting on a goldmine and their prices reflect that. So what ends-up happening is the stuff eventually gets sold at scrap prices due to failure of inventory being sold at what-should-have-been reasonable prices.

Thats a good observation you made about people collecting cars and not selling them then having their families left to deal with them. I've seen this very scenario several times over my life and it's really difficult for those left behind as you say. I never understood why people collect all of these vehicles but never let anyone take them to restore. Seems like they would rather see the cars disintegrate into the ground than let people restore them.

Interesting Ryan, I moved to Iowa in 1973 with out a vehicle. Went looking for a cheap car and bought the cheapest thing on the lot at Beneventi Chevrolet for $425. It was a 1968 Chevy Impala SS convertible with a 327 2 barrel. It was dirty, had rusted out quarters and the top had rips in it, but some bondo and duct tape let it pass inspection. I drove it for another two years and sold it for $550. Too bad I did not keep it.

@@IowaClassicCars IDK if this helps or not, however...I do know(as you probably do also) that the frames on the wagon & the 4dr are the same EXCEPT for the rear extension. So in theory, if you had a great 4dr frame, you could possibly splice in the wagon rear extension; it just becomes a question of how much of a project you want to make it. Though it'd probably be easier to go farther west for a clean wagon frame. Just food for thought is all.

Aaawww a flattop episode ! Making it twice as flat and twice as glazed by having these two in one video ! Thanks for saving both the top Impala, the middle Bel-Air nad the low end Biscayne. Sure they are in various condition, still it takes someone like Ryan to come and look at these as something more than a scrap material but a car.
Oh and a Fury is saved too ! Someone snatched the jet sidepod taillights off it, but still it's a piece of futuristic 2 dr hardtop.
Sad to see all these cars ending as cubes. The plus side is that maybe gathering them there saved them from being crushed 20-30-40 years earlier, and some people maybe gained their dream project or sought-after part from these. But you are right about guarding all of them just for the sake of hoarding the lot.

Unfortunately Ryan is right about the hoarding cars for several decades. Having that many that sit and rot and then the kids get the property and crush it all. I know someone who’s father had a massive hoard of classic cars. Everything from Ford, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Packard, Mercury, Lincoln, Pontiac, Chrysler, Dodge and many more brands of car. There were rare and common cars in that hoard. When the father passed away all but 8 cars were crushed and hauled out for scrap. A massive collection of good parts and restorable and rare cars gone fast. Ryan’s point is very true, sell the hoard of cars sitting just rotting away to people that can use them. Otherwise one day it will all most likely be crushed up and hauled away as scrap metal. Glad you’re able to save some stuff Ryan! That ‘61 Fury and ‘61 Biscayne are cool

They are under the impression that they are sitting on a gold mine. They are unable to part with items that they think are extremely useful or even valuable. Looks like your leaving a few 61-64 Chevys, guess the price is too high or they are more gone than they appear. Next to that green AMC Rebel is a late 70's white Cordova/Charger with the hatch roof panels still there. Unless they are cracked, you may be able to find a good home for them. Always been a GM guy (but do like 32-40 Fords, currently have a 40 Ford convertible), but I also am intrigued by the 61 Plymouth Fury (so cool but yet so bizarre). So many cars in volume were hoarded years ago at great low prices and unfortunately sitting an extra 25 years greatly lowers their value way below their peak and even more their ability to be saved beyond parts cars. Enjoyed the video.

On the '61 Plymouth they designed the car and at the last minute they said "Oh Crap, it has no tail lights." Another guy said, "Just bolt them on the side done deal." So they did.

At around 12:11, I saw a mid-70s blue Chevy van (another vehicle was sitting on top) with possibly a chrome grille, bezels, and marker lights. Are you still pulling parts to ship? Thanks.

Your right about letting them sit for so long and becoming worse and less valuable. Every yard I've been to , the people or person who own them always seem to be a bit ... Off. If you know what I mean. If they don't want to sell, their not going to sell. There's a gold mine in parts on those cars. But sometimes money doesn't mean anything to them. Thanks a great video, again.

Have a look at the Furys on Cold War Motors channel up in Canada. He did an epic resto on a field found Fury which wasn't really even good as a parts car. Don Knotts, the 1960's comedian made a few adverts for the Fury too.

The 61 and the 63 weren't marked that I could see but they sure look like great candidates to be saved. The two headlight white trim pieces were off of probably at 67 through 69 Ford pickup truck. They're laying on trunk the rebel in my opinion is probably the most underestimated overlooked of the hot rods maybe because the few numbers ever put out in. The rebel competed with the charger and yes sir made by AMC. The first year there's a rambler probably 68 could be 69 maybe 70 but I think the car only had a 3-year run. See one of them done up nicely is as beautiful as a Chevelle or a charger. Some of those trucks are sin to crush. The rose of early to mid 60s Chevy and forge show had a couple of good candidates. But that flatbed one ton maybe 1964 red white grill, that body would fit on a Ford half-ton chassis. And from what I saw that thing looked like it could just be put on a truck frame or maybe fix up and use it as one ton. And it was nice enough to just keep it like it is. I'm more of a Sherry fan but I do know a couple of guys who would love to have that truck. Recently somebody stole the stainless off my kids 57 Chevy. I'd buy that off of you especially the rear window trim if you have time and comment me back about how much it would cost.

@@IowaClassicCars thank you. My other boy has a steering wheel collection. I figure that might be a little bit more time to pull one at the yard then the time you have available to do so. I generally get him one each time he completes A year in school. Or if he has an exceptionally good semester bonus steering wheel. I'm about a month and a half behind this time. I think a 62 Impala and a 1959 Chevy steering wheel is what is he would be thrill with the most. Of course is missing of the years but their time will come. Now I don't know if there is a difference between the Impala steering wheel 59 and say the Bel Air ? If you have something in stock that you want to sell and it does not have to be perfect. I do try to alternate colors for him. So if you have something in stock or later on run across something feel free to comment me. Thank you.

I ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH YOU!!! That lot has NO forgiveness. The owner of the property would've made BANK if I were there. Give me one year, and from what I could see, 75% of those cars would be GONE, with $$$$ coming in! I saw MANY near-iconic rides that even now would be on the road in short time. That the majority of those cars are gonna get crushed is an absolute CRIME! I can't now, but I will be retired shortly, and I would be running a circuit from that yard to my new home. Difference? I would make many of those rides rollers, ready to plug an engine and tranny combo and make a cool rat cruiser for any car lover. This was by far the most depressing video I have seen in a while! Just a damned, criminal shame!!! You did your part - a pair of VERY nice catches!

11:05 Why aren't you getting that red 63 Biscayne or the blue 61 2-door? They fairly intact.

Agree with you completely on those car collections. Vehicles like that Marlin are tough to find and it would be sad if it was too far gone to restore. Always liked the color of the Biscayne. Can't wait to see the 61Plymouth. And its red! It seems many of the cars you find have the floor delete option. Is it that they have been improperly sitting on the ground for years or were these X frame chevys prone to bad floors and ended up in a "collection" because of it?
