I'm glad to hear that Lily Gladstone is great in the movie. This seems like a great breakout role with international acclaim for her. The Wolf of Wall Street had Margor Robbie in her breakout role, Killers Of The Flower Moon will do the same for Lily

Let’s remember that Robbie is a very transitionally attractive WHITE woman.
I'm not entirely certain that "The Wolf of Wall Street" was Robbie's breakout role. It got her attention, definitely, but I usually forget she was in it. It seems like her subsequent work, playing "Harley Quinn" and then her Oscar nominations, is what catapulted her to stardom.
(and after appearing in two of the biggest financial and critical bombs of last fall, we'll see how long that lasts....)
I see people in the thread here implying that Gladstone will be hampered for not being white. I'm not denying the lingering specter of racism in our culture, but just in the last five years the cinema/television world has changed, there are many non-white actresses breaking through and doing excellent work. I don't see why that *has to be* an unequivocal barrier for her, as far as being a working actress.
I hate to say it, but it's likely the fact that she's not traditionally beautiful, that's what will likely prevent her from being "a star". But honestly who cares? Stardom is glib and nearly *always* transitory. I find the focus on "stardom" to be generally toxic, it's a despicable metric. Depending on her range as an actress, the exposure from this film could result in Gladstone working on various projects into old age. Maybe not as a "star", but surely playing a variety of character roles.
It's up to her, really. Can't wait to see what she does with this role. In the trailer she's remarkably powerful in just reaction shots. That bodes well.

You bring up some fascinating talking points about the film's focus and Gladstone's character and interpretation. Podcast and UA-cam reviews are so often so much more enlightening and to the point than the written reviews, putting things in much plainer terms. Great work!

From the film's synopsis, I would prefer to see more Native American cast involved not as a background but as actual characters to balance out the main cast. As you mentioned, the presence of a character played by Lily Gladstone is less developed, perpetuating an old trope about Native American women in films. Glad the story was taken on a big screen, at least.
Perhaps, Lily Gladstone played this role as a native plays a role of a native instead of how a white person would plays the part of a native. I am eager to see the film.
As an indigenous person, I wish native people would have had more involvement out of my selfish desire to see more representation but I think the movie achieves what native people feel.
A struggle that’s very ours and it’s not to be put out there for people to “be in our shoes” for the movie and then continue their life of privilege. I think it’s still keeps outsiders from appropriating and feel like they understand when they just cant.
I’m fully prepared to love this because it ticks so many boxes for me and I absolutely need DeNiro and Scorsese to win supporting & director. DeNiro deserves it so much
TOTALLY AGREE! De Niro - one of THE most influential actors ever, certainly since the 70s - deserves as many Oscars as they can give him. This stuff doesn't mean anything, but he is most definitely a guy who should be a record holder. When Waltz won for "Django", I was shocked, I think De Niro was shocked too. No offense to Christoph Waltz, but that should have been Bobby D's third Oscar, most definitely.

Lily Gladstone has always managed to captivate me with her performances and I am glad to hear that you loved her performance. She surely deserves multiple awards not just Oscar. She is magic on screen

The way he described The Irishman is what I was expecting the film to be, but when I watched it for myself, I genuinely just found it a great film among Scorcese's best. If this is anything like that, I'm in.
I definitely agree that it’s fair to be worried about a more showy performance overtaking Gladstone, but just looking at the massive hype that’s been built for her + the way she’s already being campaigned (like she’s EVERYWHERE) I think she might just be it this year.

Interesting takes on Mollie’s character possibly being naive - after Ernest admitted during the trial that he was involved, she wouldn’t believe it. I believe she was quoted saying, “not my Ernest, not my Ernest.” I think the realization would have been too much to take, including her realizing the Shoun brothers were poisoning her and likely poisoned her mother as well who died a few years prior under their care.

How did you get to see the film before it came out?
Thank you for watching this trailer. I'm Osage. The history of the book and movie "is"(not was) much deeper. It still goes on to this very day. My late grandpa was born in 1931. I'm so fortunate and blessed that my linage wasn't directly affected. The wolves probably numbered in the thousands. There is great tragedy in this, but there is also great hope. My family is but 1 story. There are countless others who have triumphed. I'm so glad this movie is coming out. I hope other directors start doing this with other native American tribes.

I appreciate your review. I had wanted a more Osage perspective. Especially as Scorsese did it well according to your review. Having something new and different in Scorsese’s work should be focused on. I will still go see it, but I will be prepared for not as much Osage perspective as I had hoped.
The book is one of the most terrifying studies I have ever read. Can't wait to see this movie !
I loved the film. In Scorsese's defence, there is very little documentary information out there on Molly and her thoughts/feelings. I think Scorsese felt it would be disrespectful to speculate or ventriloquize on behalf of the Osage characters
Apparently DiCaprio wad originally cast as the fbi agent investigating the murders, and when the filming was shut down for Covid, DiCaprio spearheaded a rewriting of the script to focus more on his current character

Curious to know if this could win Adapted Screenplay or not unless if the category isn’t super competitive this year. I could see it as the front runner but also looking back to Scorsese films post The Departed like Hugo, The Wolf of Wall Street and The Irishman. Those films didn’t win Screenplay so I’m 50/50 predicting this for a win or not. If I can see anything else winning Adapted Screenplay it would be Oppenheimer. The recent trailer has a lot of conversation scenes focusing on the urgency of the Trinity Test and maybe Nolan has a chance to win an Oscar in that category.

I think he's referring to a certain creative choice Scorcese took with the presentation of the information at the end, not to the actual content of the narrative

Maybe that’s BS, I wasn’t there. But this film was way more accurate than goodfellas, historically speaking.

@@kevinshields2065 again I don't think the guy on the video was refering to the content itself, but to how Scorcese chose to present the ending. I've heard that the film ends with an epilogue which detaches us from the actual conflict and summarizes the consequences of this story across the decades that followed, sort of like in a documentary, with a narrator telling us what happened, or something along those lines. Regardless of what actually happens in the film, I've heard the ending will be creatively somewhat unconventional in how it presents the information. The accuracy of the events depicted in the film is irrelevant to this topic, what is being discussed regarding the ending is the presentation choices, not the plot

I've been saying for months that De Niro was a lock in Supporting and I think he has a very big chance of winning.
People always seem to appreciate Scorsese films more a few years later. Casino was mixed reviews at the time. We expect them to be as good as something else rather than what they are. I’m going to keep an open mind.
Bullshit. I saw Casino the day it opened, loved it. I've never seen a Scorsese movie that I DIDN'T like.....and then liked later. That's never happened. Other directors yes, but never Marty.. There are lots of his movies I don't think much of (especially post Casino), and lots of his movies are among my top faves, but none of those movies have changed for me upon repeated viewings. In fact I just watched half of Bringing Out The Dead recently and it's just a lousy as it was in the 90s! lol. Casino STILL has mixed reviews. PS: The mixed reviews were mostly about rehashing Goodfellas, which is fair. Didn't bother me, but I can see where that would be someone's gripe. That and the normal "it's too violent, it's too long" that he always gets.

@@TTM9691 The critic Jonathan Rosenbaum also complained about Scorsese using the music from Contempt in Casino, calling it very tacky, and I agree. He uses the music over the final monologue to sell the content of the monologue, that something was lost by the regulation of sin city by the banks. Yeah, maybe if you were there, but it means absolutely nothing to the rest of us. The montage at the end of Babylon is the same kind of a fail (but actually it doesn't come across as a fail in Casino, because of the feeling contained in the music, but it's tacky to appropriate the power of that music, just as Kim Novak was right to complain about the use of Vertigo's Love Theme in the ten years later forgotten movie, The Artist).
@@TTM9691 I love "Bringing Out the Dead", personally. I think it's one of his most unfortunately overlooked films.
Thematically it fits right in with much of the rest of his filmography, particularly "The Last Temptation of Christ" and "Shutter Island", a good man haunted by burdens (and visions) he doesn't believe he can carry anymore, and the tragic self-destruction that ensues.
Great soundtrack too.

Leo is often miscast in his movies as well. Howard Hughes? LOL), Sorry, doofus, but putting a bunch of Hollywood actors in a NYC movie just doesn't cut it. You must live in flyover country where they buy this crap. All I can say is: a person who tells me "Bringing Out The Dead" is anything other than a piece of crap should never be listened to, ever, at least about what makes a good film. Get some taste.

They largely ignored Silence because the studio fucked up the campaign. Apple TV+, on the other hand, will absolutely put all of their chips into this basket and make sure this gets the campaign it deserves.
I'm still pissed about the reception "Silence" received. An incredibly beautiful, compelling film.
My personal theory is that, after Trump's election in 2016, the kinds of people who see Scorsese's films maybe (?) weren't feeling a narrative revolving around faith. Faith is too often associated with conservatism, for better or worse.
Andrew Garfield's performance is mind-bogglingly powerful and when he WAS nominated that year but for "Hacksaw Ridge", it was so disappointing. Garfield went to places film actors don't usually go to in "Silence". It really breaks my heart how overlooked it was. I'm heartened to consistently see people online sticking up for it though.

Paramount is releasing it Oct 6 in limited theatrical release and then wide release Oct 20. Will stream on Apple TV+ after that.
Oscars are still only awarded to films that get a theatrical release, so there was never any doubt that it would. I saw The Irishman and Roma on the big screen and I think that made a big difference. There were completely engrossing.
Yea the Irishman wasn’t good for me. And I love long movies but it just wasn’t entertaining. Hoping this is better.

This film was fantastic. The only only movie I’ve seen at any festival or theater this year that stands a chance against it is Zone of Interest.
completely agree with you. There is so much hype for the movie and some will call anything Scorsese does a 5 star masterwork. He's one of my favorite directors but those stan reactions can seem disingenuous and getting caught in the hype.

Assuming Scorsese is nominated for best director, he has now made 9 narrative feature films since 2002 and 7 have been nominated in the category. Same for best picture. Wow.
If and when Scorsese gets nominated for Best Director for Killer of the Flower Moon, he will officially be the 2nd highest nominated Director in Hollywood History with 10 nominations followed closely at number 3 by Spielberg with 9 nominations.

All due respect, I know people seem to like him and I'm not knocking anyone personally, but I don't get Jessie Plemons. I just don't get him. I understand he's part of this EG Marshall, Jerry Orbach, Chishu Ryu-school of "subtle stone face acting", and I understand the place for that. I suppose I just don't understand the acclaim.
I just personally haven't seen the range enough in Plemons' work to justify the admiration I see. He plays....him. Which is fine, you can count on that and that's fine. But the actors of his generation who I feel are legitimately great actors, Michael Fassbender, Tom Hardy, James McAvoy, those guys DO have range. I just don't see Plemons anywhere _close_ to those guys.

Idk if its because i watched it on my laptop and some headphones and not in the theater, but a lot of the sound felt off, like some dialogue was blatantly added or altered. Also i wasnt crazy about the fraser performance
Also after reading that the violence was dialed down (mollie was being poisoned w arsenic etc.) just so that ernest can have this weird grey area about love when it was just insane abuse puts a sour taste in my mouth.

The 'weirdly Lynchian' room where DeNiro gives DiCaprio a beating was full of freemason imagery and symbolism. The two pillars at the center, checkered floor, and a bunch of 'G's and square+compass engravings. Hale also says in that scene that he is a 32nd degree freemason and it really stood out to me how Scorsese included the fact that Hale was a freemason of the highest degree and why he decided to do so. The movie is not only filled with traditional Osage and then also Catholic imagery and depiction of rituals, but has this one short quick scene entirely set in a masonic room where the main villain reveals he is a 32nd degree mason, and then it is never brought up again (as far as I noticed).
How on earth is this most anticipated movie in recent history ???
greatest living director, incredible cast, 200m budget, riveting true crime historical story, incredible cinematography and score composed by Robbie Roberton of The Band

From the book, Molly didnt think that her husband had anything to do with it. Not even after she escaped death. So no, she had no idea of the wolves. The Osage didnt even know why they were targeted. A number of the murders went un noticed even by the FBI until after the trial. Others were killed in a non direct murderous fashion. Also one of the wolves was the person conducting the autopsy. Read the book before you complain about the movie. Molly had no forsight until it was explained to her what was happening. She took noticed more about the white supremacy she encountered & the sly racism hurled her way. She was rich with black and white severants. White folks didnt take kindly to her hiring white severants. As the Murders hit closer to home. She withdrew from society. Out of fear and reasonable paranoia. But she never came close to realizing her husband and sister's husband were the killers.
The real question is how many wolves were in this movie, bro!? 🐺🐺🐺

3 and a half hours is bordering on too long, and kinda why Kill Bill was chopped in half. DiCaprio is amazing so it might be worth the watch.
i know where you're coming from in regards on giving more to the Osage people...BUT, it's a business after all...and Gladstone doesn't sell movies, DiCaprio does.

Later on the same day a large party of over hundred American civilians intruders arrived there with guns and rifles very unannounced! They seriously wanted to take away the Dakota sioux Indian people's traditional Buffalo hunting grounds and our rich fertile farm lands along the beautiful Missouri River! The guilty murderous intruders would brutal kill the entire Dakota sioux Indian people poor innocent lives there! The elders were young children at the time saw an witness the tragedy unfolded there will hiding a safe distance away. Many years later they told the story well crying and wipt of the very sad brutal Cheney rush massacre, the second sand creek massacre of 1864! The only tragic massacre in the us history someone tried to cover up the evidence that it never happened there! There's no memorial site because of the forgotten fallen Dakota sioux Indian people who wrongfully slaughtered there! The American intruders built a huge fire an burned the poor Dakota sioux Indian bodies to burned ashes remains! No film or director is above critique, and surely Scorsese didn't want the audience to feel like the indigenous community was underrepresented, as was The Oscar Expert's experience during that part of his review.
