You couldn’t convince the immigration officer about your stay details and you should have gathered some knowledge about NZ and how to commute between the cities. It’s super expensive to hire taxis and travel around. I have been living in NZ since 2009 and would advise people to prepare well before coming here and not just give vague answers to the immigration

Foreigners don't understand the railway links are very different in both countries compared to other parts of the world. Plus the abilities of both countries nationals private car ownership and use.
