I love how JMS who is atheist showed respect for religion and used religion in his stories like this song and the 4 religious people who came to Babylon 5 and tried to help people and helped Sheridan too
exactly, he understood that there are good components to religion, the values, the morality it teaches, how we should be to one another, etc And more over the power of belief in general, even if its just belief in oneself or people in general with no god figure per se. Its just the part that some people take it "believe in my god or die" and the negative aspects of it that he disagrees with, BUT what's interesting is he acknowledges that those caused by humans too and not some indicative of the religion itself. So yeah, I love how he balances the two. In fact I would even say Balance and Cyclicality are the two fundamental principles about life and the universe that people need to realize and work on.
@xellossaxon then how do you explain the Anti theists? They are Atheists that hate religion so much they are willing to not only destroy it, but also destroy the people who are religious. They are to Atheism what Evangelicals are to Christianity.
@xellossaxon He wasn't speaking of terrorism but of those who undermine or pervert the purported sentiment of a group. Televangelists that claim an association with Christ but rob widows would be an example of those whose actions disparage the entire group. Claiming to love your neighbor but hating anyone your leadership claims is different would be another. A lot of the people I know have left organized Christian churches (mostly modern evangelical churches) because of similar hypocrisy. Actions such as these are not in keeping with Biblical teachings. In fact, they are exactly opposite. The same kind of misplaced zeal could infect humanists and atheists. Instead of focusing on natural mortality, there are those that say all faith should be denied, destroyed, controlled, and other negative sentiments. So, while some are like JMS, pointing out the bad and acknowledging and embracing the good, there are those who see it as ALL bad.
Seeing Refa finally get his at the hands of an angry mob of his Narn victims while this song played in the background was emotionally satisfying for me. It fit Refa's situation all too well and justice was finally served!
Yeah.. but keep in mind he was in that situation because Londo believed he was behind the assassination of his girlfriend... which he was framed for by mr. Morden... who ended up decorating the palace garden with his head on a stake.. after first having it melted off by a nuclear blast to the face...
SeedlingNL Mr Morden may have framed Refa but Refa committed numerous other crimes which made him worthy of being brutally killed by an angry lynch mob of his victims. If anything, I respected Mr Morden more for some reason then I did Refa.
Morden at best was as a vessel a puppet. Whatever that made Morden who he was at that point was long gone. Refa by contrast did his actions consciously taking delight in atrocity or without moral consideration.
Just rewatched this. Delenn and Lennier may be confused, but there's Gaim and a Pak'Ma'Ra enthusiastically singing and bobbing their heads in the background. :D
Always makes me laugh thinking what the minbari starting to realize the song is about the end of the world and the Humans are singing about it like they are glad for it, lol
Know this is an old comment but I don't care. The song is more like holy retribution and judgment of sins which yea given their recent history I imagine would make the minbari uncomfortable.
I made a parody of this after a former friend of mine was caught shoplifting D&D books from an RPG store and got chased through the mall by security. I can hear it playing as he's chased, screaming "Lord, save my butt!" and "He ran to The Gap to hide his face but the cops cried out "No hiding Place"".
Best part of the scene was Lennier’s wtf face at how grim the song is as he’s trying to sing along. Don’t think the Minbari were ready for a taste of human religion lol
The singer in the episode is a lady called Marva Hicks, I checked out the episode's wiki-page. The song appears to be a rewrite or variation of a song by The Original Carter Family by JMS and probably Christopher Franke
Right now I'm doing my first Babylonthon, watching the whole show for the first time (in English and one show after the other as they were intended) and what can I say? I've already learned to appreciate the humor of the show right from the start, but boy oh boy, the scene in which Lord Refa starts running in the catacombs on Narn and the show cuts to the gospel choir starting up on Babylon 5 - I believe that is among my favorite moments so far!!! Thanks for sharing. GNM
There's no hiding place down here. There's no hiding place down here. You know I went to the rock to hide my face And the rock cried out: no hiding place. There's no hiding place down here. You know the sinners gonna be running At the knowlege of they fate. They gonna run to the rocks in the mountains, But their prayers will be too late. You know they forgot about Jesus, Not knowing the end was near, But they will be running trying to find hidden place, When it comes their time to die. No hiding place on the mountain, No hiding place in the waters, No hiding place down here, no hiding place. I went to the rock to hide my face And the rock cried out: no hiding place. There's no hiding place down here. You know when the wall catch the fire, There'll be no hidden place. When the waters starts boilling There'll be no hidden place. If the value of an object is determined by what someone is willing to pay for it, then we are truly priceless, when we see what God had to pay for us, to bring us into His Holy Presence and satisfy His Holiness of no sin allowed, and to adopt us as His Children
Fantastic song. If anyone knows the artist please post it, I would love to buy this song. Hopefully there will be a B5 spinoff in production soon. There is a huge fan base out there. I would love to see a mini series about the Dilgar War.
@PaleChariot Hell yeah! Even the Shadows learned this lesson the HARD way, heh heh..... Even the Drakh who seemingly outwitted Londo Mollari and enthralled him were in the end, taken down by his plans in the long run as he covertly worked to undermine their efforts and ultimately have them defeated.
a miniseries about the Dilgar War would be nice, preceded by a feature film or miniseries about the First Great War, nicest of all if Michael O'Hare would be available or a show about the time when The First One was still The Only One..

Death by angry Narns... the best way to deliver Karma to those pretentious Centauri nobles who REALLY deserve it; since 2260.
