I appreciate all of you watching my videos! ✳️Support me on Patreon: www.patreon.com/militaryvehiclereviews If you could help support this channel so I can keep buying and reviewing these pre-built models I would really appreciate your support 😃 I plan on reviewing ALL of the 21st Century, Elite Force, Jsi/Merit 1:18 scale models. It will get expensive haha.
Both great kits, I wouldn't kick either one out of my hanger:-) The Marines were also issued the Corsair you may remember Pappy Boyington, Metal of Honor, The Black Sheep Squadron and TV series. The gull wing served two primary functions - make room for the massive prop needed for the 2,000, horsepower double radial engine and keep the landing gear short for carrier operation. She was not too maneuverable compared to zero at low latitude but made up for that in power for climbing. The Japanese called it "The Whispering Death" because air running through slots on the wings in a dive made a whistling sound. It was such a great aircraft it was used throughout the Korean War. Standing by for the next build.
Here's some things to consider; The gull-wing design wasn't just for the prop (the P-47 prop was over 13' as well) and landing gear. The designer wanted the Corsair wings to be mid-fuselage in order to reduce drag. Maneuverability doesn't have as much to do with altitude as it does speed (yes, you fly faster at higher altitudes). Yes, the A6M could turn tighter than the Corsair (and just about every Allied fighter) but then there's roll rate. After we captured a Zero from the Aleutian Islands, we discovered that it's control surfaces (esp. ailerons) would lock up at high speeds making the plane almost uncontrollable. That's why our pilots were trained not to dogfight with them as dogfighting is done at much slower speeds. That in addition to the tactics of the "Thatch Weave", Japanese pilots were at a disadvantage for the first time. Other than lower speed maneuverability, the F4U outclassed the Zero in every way.
Man I miss 21st century toys. I used to have the P38 and Stuka but they got tossed a long time ago in a move with a box of old GI Joe stuff. Man I was dumb.
Excellent as usual. The comparisons where a great idea. Between 21st Century toys and BBi, after the P51, the F4U had the most variants in factory applied paint schemes. As you correctly point out, BBi versions will always have better details and paint. Unfortunately though, BBi came later to the market and were more expensive. They realized that the buyers were not kids with pocket money, but adult collectors and so hiked the quality and price to match that demographic. There just wasn't the demand though and releases were limited. That's why today a 21st Century F4U can be found on Evilbay for around 100-150 bucks boxed, the BBi version being 4x that much. Oh and beware the wing fold hinges- they disintegrate with age.
Man I'm kicking myself for not picking this one up, or the Elite Force version. Back when Toys R Us was still around, my local store sold both companies, and I bought a P-51D Mustang which is awesome. They were so much cheaper back in the day.
Nice one i have five different version's of the F4u,one being the very rare yellow nosed FAA version. I wasn't a big fan of 21st Century Toys poor attempt of weathering. Well Done Keep going and thank's for sharing.
The F4Y-1D should have been a warning about the accuracy of the model. The markings are all wrong: star and bars insignia was introduced in 1947 and the Navy was flying later variants of the Corsair ( the widely used F4U-4 introduced in 1944. And Navy aircraft post ww2 until 1955 were midnight blue. I have a 1/18 F6F and a TBF that are pretty accurate. Thanks for posting!
Thanks for the great video! I just picked up one of these and I love it. Curiously mine has the same mark on the upper left wing, identical to yours. Probably has something to do with manufacturing.
Way back when, new in store, bbi was about 150% of the cost of 21st Century. Great review as usual. Good luck in your acquisition of product. I know how hard this stuff is to track down.
Observation: The U.S. Navy didn't have a red stripe in the American insignia during WWII. They were entirely white. I know so because my late Father flew his F4U from the CV-20 USS Bennington, and I have photos that he brought back.

Fun fact: the Japanese nicknamed the Corsair the whistling death because of the sound of the engine
