There are only 4 tiers of character:
- I Lost To This Character Because They're Top 5
- I Lost To This Character Because They Might As Well Be Top 5
- I Lost To This Character Because They Only Have Low-Tier Gimmicky Bullshit
- Fair And Honest (My Character)
nope I lost against my character because they use cheap gimmicks and I played fair
Top 5 vs Outside the top 5 really is the 6ft vs 5'11 of fighting games
@@JCintheBCC There's always a place for you somewhere, but it might be lonely my friend
So called free thinkers when a tier list drops
Street Fighter 6 really shows how hard it is for many people to wrap their heads around a balanced game
I agree with Sajam, it should be top SIX characters that should be feathered and tarred and as a No. 7 enjoyer myself I do be KINDA clean and my character is a STRONG mid tier TOPS.
When the discourse is about top 5 and not top 1 or 2 that tells me the game is in pretty good shape.
0:40 "Looking at this and thinking 'Where's my character, they're too high.'"
My Ryu maining ass seeing him at the bottom
As a Jamie main I feel your pain. I honestly feel like Jamie is underrated tho but that's just me.
@@nonzerovolta2541just means you are skilled when you win. At least that's what I tell myself
from what I can tell, SF6's top 5 is:
-ken
-luke
-guile
-jp
-ed
-aki
-blanka
-rashid
-bison
- chun li
-zangief
-juri
-cammie
-akuma
-deejay
the rest are probably somewhere in the middle ig
Shoutout to LK tier lists, where his tiers are like "this character can win a major" or "this character will fuck up your bracket run" etc instead of letters
Yea I love LK’s tier list approach, it doesn’t tell you a character is better than another, just what the characters are suited for.
If I lose to a top 5 character then it's 100% the games fault
If I lose to a top 10 character then it's 99% the games fault
If I lose to a bottom 5 character then they're just abusing people lack of match-up knowledge
If I lose a mirror match then this game sucks
Top 5 shawarma toppings:
5. Turnips
4. Onion
3. Spice
2. Lettuce
1. Garlic sauce
Tomato is good, but it is skillful and earns its place in the shwarma and I would not deserve to be charged extra for it
spice is not a topping this is whack. toppings are optional, the shawarma spice is integral.
@@jordanschmitt9412 I don't eat shawarma with spice but I can appreciate it
bro purple onion goes insane in a Shawarma. it has been my favorite topping ever since i tried it
Whenever you lose to Zato, it doesn't feel like "oh gg, bottom 1 got me." My brain definitely does the gymnastics to call him Top 28, that feels better
The most fun I’ve had in these games is when ABA came out, and I decided to no longer give a shit what people thought. No tierlists, no matchups, just vibes.
Once I got out of my own head about how good a character may or may not be, I finally started having a blast. It also helps that she in particular is super fun in general.
@@evilded2 no matchups as in I did not look or care how she fared vs x or y character. None of the 6-4, 2-8 stuff
I love playing ABA, but playing against Asuka or HC makes me take a break lol.
Same with me and AKI pre buffs. Now she's one of my favourite fg characters
I've never seen a group of people not be able to count to 5 more than people in the FGC
No wonder Sf6 fried their brains and they forgot how to comprehend patches
Rashid is Top 5 Grappler now,
Zangief is Top 5 Zoner now,
Guile is Top 5 Rushdown now,
Cammie is Top 5 Setup Character now,
and Ken is Top 5 Ken now
Im never saying gg to a Happy Chaos player, Sajam, and youre never going to change my mind.
Sajam is doing God’s work by actively combating the primal urge for people to both shift blame off of themselves and also categorize every single thing ever
Seeing discourse like this happen as often as it has been has convinced me that "Forming an Opinion" is a skill we need to be taught in school at an early age.
Like I just want people to be more articulate about things they like and dislike, is that too much to ask?
Tier lists matter way more for games with more diverse balance. Having a tier list for SF6 is basically which half is most likely to win Evo and which half is less likely to win Evo lol
Like the melee tierlist that asumsaus made where it was "has won multiple evos, has won an evo, shown to be able to win an evo" etc
Yeah, tier lists used to matter a lot cause the games were so poorly balanced there was almost a guarantee of at least one ultra powerful character nobody can beat and one horrid character that can't do shit. Nowadays though, the difference between top tier and bottom tier is so tiny that it's only going to matter if you yourself are a top tier player. At basically every other skill level, it's all about the skill of the player.
Imagine how frustrating this is in smash. The cast is 90 characters. And I've seen no less than 25 characters in people's top 10. And it doesn't matter cus really good characters are still really good
People let tier list dominate their mentality. So accepting that a character is somehow worse but they still never learned how to fight them means that’s they can’t justify their loss anymore.
It feels like all of Sajam's videos are him hunting dumb posts on twitter
While you are right, unfortunately, these dumb posts are widely held beliefs by the community.
seems to me that Fighting Game Dumb Thoughts are natural and normal, so it makes sense to spend a lotta time debunking them. I know I'm glad that - after beating me in Melee in 2006 - someone patiently explained to me why there's no such thing as "amorally playing cheap". we all gotta learn sometime!
It’s more like dumb posts hunting him down in chat and having to talk about em LOL
@@life-destiny1196He'll literally never run out of stuff to talk about before Twitter runs itself into the ground. Infinite human stupidity and all that jazz.
The anti cat chewing tech is applying bitter apple spray
Yeah, but bitter apple spray is like a $12 DLC character, and he hasn't even labbed the character against his specific Cat player.
The thing about tier lists is that they don't even really matter to someone until they're like good good at the game. Gold rank players should not be concerned with tier lists, they should be concerned with not getting hit by random Drive Impacts.
You could argue that there is simply a different tier list for low levels. Characters that have some *thing* that noobs struggle to deal with are gonna be higher tier on the low level player tier list.
y'all remember that time that League of Legends included nerfs to a character in the patch notes, but accidentally didn't make those changes in game? the character's WIN-RATE WENT DOWN ANYWAY. cuz our brains be crazy.
Sajam has such a way with explaining things, if he structured this video a bit differently and turned it into a script it could be its own standup comedy routine.
recent games are getting so balanced that the concept of "top 5" hasn't really been relevant to me. No character is truly unbeatable
this video might be in the top 5 of sajam videos
"Nobody never knew how the game worked ever" This is truest truth that has ever been truthed. This is everybody. This is me. This is you. This is little Timmy down the block.
Sajam just holding the basket to the camera while the cat chills in it chewing on the basket is such a vibe man, I aspire to be as chill as that cat
Mmm yes, Japan has promoted me from villain to hero in the sim gief matchup. Gotta love maining an honest low tier like stretchy man.
Great point about so much of the discussion on tournaments being about characters rather than the players, which is kinda sad
Agree with the point overall but i think its fine when people argue about tierlist placements and question previously powerful characters dropping so low. Tier list are meant to be used for discussion so the one guy commenting on DJ was fine if he explained why. Could be he believes his tool set is too good to ever be the same level as certain other characters or that people over estimate the nerfs.
I feel like I have the momento picture of Phenom saying "Don't believe his lies"
It's wild to me that Japanese tier lists always have Zangief really high, but almost nobody plays him. If you think he's so great, _learn him._ Or, alternatively, maybe just admit that Itabashi and Kobayan are amazing.
Always reminds me of the Puff situation in Melee. Just because 1 dude sees great success all of a sudden the character needs to be labeled “tier 1”. It’s the equivalent of thinking Gen was top 5 when xien won Evo.
I just don't believe that a character with multiple terrible matchups should ever be considered top tier.
This discourse baffles me. People rank some character as "top tier", but nobody plays with that character. Happens all the time.
It's really because being a Grappler player is so different and is a playstyle that most people wouldn't want to get good at. Remember when Dhalsim was Top 2 in SFV and had a more favorable matchup spread than Luke and yet nobody switched to that character, it's the same concept.
That’s not how character picking works, a lot of people don’t pick up a certain top tier because they play weird or have a distinct mindset/playstyle. Dhalsim was always good in Sfv after buffs, no one played him. Poison was top 5 on a lot of lists, only rep was idom. Sfv ed after final patch was super high on most pro lists, only rep was endingwalker. This happens in every game, it’s not a weird or rare thing.
Adding a tally on the “how many times you’ve had to make this video” list.
i do remember being surprised by how quickly sajam declared bison is strong and was taken aback by the energy he had as he played him. i can see how someone with duplicitous goals could see/hear that and decided that sajam has declared bison is "the best" if they have an axe to grind, either against the character, the game, sajam himself, or god
it feels like people hear someone like sajam have an elevated tone, either from surprise or just being impressed, and draw a looooot of conclusions from tone alone. the words dont matter, sajam gasped and exclaimed so obviously his thinks bison is top 1. doest matter what words he used, his tone says otherwise!
In dota 2 they can do a nerf like “Phantom Assassin has -2 base damage” and some frogs will start saying “Phantom Assassin is unplayable now”.
(I really like frogs, it just sounds similar to Troglodytes)
I don't know if Gachikun is the only one or if people are now collectively realizing, but Ed is in the same tier as Chun-li and I think that's pretty accurate
I was perfectly comfortable with my main Juri being considered around 6th-8th in Year 1. Strong, but not broken. Now she's considered similar or slightly higher on average, and I'm still fine with it. I just hoped for no real nerfs, and I got that, so it's all good.
Finally, the return of Kermit with a katana smoking a blunt. Some characters never leave top 5
Not even watched the video yet but I just wanna say that thumbnail is pure gold already.
I’ve never paid attention to tier lists so the top 5 convo usually makes me check out when people start talking about it. I wish people felt satisfied just playing who you want regardless of what other people are saying but I understand folks care about tiers when it comes to tournaments and high level play
I have played jamie since the beginning. The first month, I used tier list as an excuse, now I don't care in a way that I don't use it as an excuse, just to know people's opinions about characters just have an conversation or discussion about it.
I love how most mf's who straight up study tier lists and all that arent even going to take that to like a tourney or anything, its just to validate themselves while playing ranked or hoping theyll get carried up
8:05 It's because people assume a character's strengths are just the things they specifically have a hard time dealing with, so like with jp a lot of people just used his tier placement as an exuse to complain about his zoning and are now mad they can't use his tier as an exfuse for not learning the matchup
Exactly. It's why he stayed in top 3 even after his amnesia and anti air nerf when realistically that put him down a lot way before the further season 2 nerfs for him.
"It makes me think that no one knew how the game worked, ever." Ah yes, the more things change, the more they stay the same
As soon as the balance patch dropped I saw people in Twitch chat still complaining about Luke not being nerfed enough when they hadn't even played the patch yet. I saw how many nerfs and changes Luke got and compared it Ken (lol) and was like, "Luke got hit pretty hard. Idk what people are on about." He certainly wasn't the "biggest loser" of the patch, but it was clear his position in the hierarchy was gonna shift.
I blame Casey Kasem for the American obsession with ranking.
Maybe I got into the fgc to late or I’m getting older but whenever I lose I almost always say “I got outplayed” or “I messed up”
even beyond top-five foolishness, I think it speaks highly of SF6's balance that the tier list you showed only goes down to C! if a game doesn't have any D or F tier characters, that's an achievement! but emotionally, we just see the top and bottom!
they could never take away my love for you tier list videos
I was starting and thinking, “what does that Japanese say…”
I'm guessing it says "characters that wouldn't be weird/wrong to place in Top5" (I cannot read that one kanji so I'mma guess it means "place/put in")
0:35 *Walter White raising his hands meme* You got me ✋🏻😦🤚🏻
In a game like sf6 the best character and the worst character are pretty close in power level, we aren’t in the 90s where a bottom character is like unplayable garbage. Top 5 really doesn’t have any real meaning in current day fgs
Shoutouts to John Cusack's High Fidelity.
People having a hard time believing characters who got nerfed are much lower in the tier list now is weird. Usually it's seemed to be the opposite IME - people seem prone to overreacting to any nerfs a character gets, proclaiming them terrible and saying they'll drop them regardless of how significant the nerfs really are.
Season 2 will be known as 'Pay-2-win' in the future.
You 100% said he was the best in the game. You shook my hand while doing so. You said "Hey am sajam, steve, you know Bison is the best in the game."
The thumbnail editors deserve a raise
I thought it was a going to be a top 5 of the biggest cases of brain rots in the FG.
If we had 6 fingers we'd talk about a top 6
We love 5s and 10s. It's because we have 5 fingers on each hand. It's how we built our number system.
This thumbnail is too good.
We should've seen this coming.
Top 2 JP Ken into Top 2 Luke Ken into Top 1 Luke(Ken downplayer propaganda) equals Top 5*.
*We want 13 characters in S tier but want our list to make brain go hehe Top 5.
Top 5 always feels funny to me in a tier list, because it feels so counter-intuitive. The idea of tiers is to specifically denote the gaps between one character versus another in quality. Lumping an arbiturary top 5 feels like it dilutes that idea. Are the best 5 characters even close to one another? Old Jojo is a good example. When looking at the raw roster, top 5's usually like Pet Shop, Kak, Pol, Ice and Jotaro, yeah? What's the gap between Kakyoin and Jotaro for example? Is Jotaro closer to Ice's power or is he closer to like Avdol and New Kak, who would be some of the occupants below this top 5? Yeah, you could say that Pet and Kak are banned, but that only shunts the conversation forward. How does Avdol compare to Pol or Ice and is he closer to them than Dio or Chaka, who now are commonly seen as next in line after top 5? Trying too rigidly to stick to the idea that top 5 must be a tier of their own just leaves too many questions about what said top 5 actually represent in the game and doesn't really answer what the gap between top 5 and the rest of the cast is.
I like how there are 2 characters in 3rd strike's top 5.
This basket is top 5 and I'm gonna keep chewing on it sorry Sajam
Also saw people saying Zangief "got his legs broken" when they took away a big toe hitbox from his 5mk. Most character strength talk just seems like noise.
I think a big element of people being surprised with characters being nerfed becoming weaker is because they still lose to the characters. “I can’t beat this character so they are objectively better than mine” type situation.
Ryu could get all the buffs in the game and still somehow be bottom 1
I like to pick characters that get tiered low, because the tears are that much sweeter when you win
Smokin on your Top 5 tonight
Feels like there are players who think the true meta game is complaining to devs loud enough, so they nerf stuff they hate into obscurity. "Top 5 things for my main to hide behind when the nerf bat comes."
The balance in SF6 very good right out of the gate. The patches made it even better. The difference between the best and worst character is smaller than in any fighting game that I've played.
Hey sajam can you make a style vs efficiency video? I think that would shed some more light on the “top 5” and improvement conversations
There aren't many genres flooded with players who know so comparatively much about their own niche and so comparatively little about everything else
The thing unspoken at the end there is "If I admit they're weaker then I have no excuse for losing to them so I must vehemently defend their strength"
At the end of the day having a realistic and reasonable understanding of character strength requires, bare mininum, accepting that that JP player who whipped your ass may in fact have been better at the game than you
This is the fundamental fear the FGC cannot overcome
My solution: avoid blaming character power level for why I lost by calling my opponent a sweaty pro wannabe.
Damn, got here before the bots.
personally when talking about character strength with my friends, top 5 is basically a shorthand for "this character is strong/high tier". For example my friends were surprised at Dragunov still winning tournaments after his nerf and I said after his nerfs he's still around the top 5(still strong but idk where people who make lists put him)
Here’s what I really want to hear about:
Across all the games, and players, and hands…
What are the top 5 fingers in the FGC?
Lol chun sat down at a chair tagged 'A' and watched the tier list brawl ever since this game camenout
i think people vastly underestimate the differences these tweaks add up to, especially in a game where the power levels are relatively close together to begin with
Sajam def top 5 among FGC youtubers
Playing a low tier in GGST, I was definitely looking at tier lists hoping to see my character at the bottom as copium. Now I play Juri in SF6 and I keep looking at tier lists hoping she's at the top. "Please let me be playing a top tier this time, dooming about my character sucks so bad"
Lose to bottom 1: is that character secretly top 5?
My personal theory about this is that people view tier lists in a very linear way, as if the lowest character has a 0% chance of winning and the highest character has a 100% chance of winning. In reality, the lowest ranked character can still win, especially in a game like SF6.
speaking of playing characters differently, i love watching kim replays bc the top 4 famous eastern players all play her Very different from one another
Jamie too low, we palm our way to top 5
Average “nah I’m carried by my top 3 character” enjoyer

I feel so seen. Ryu is my BOY
I love how it applies to every game he's had Denjin in.
I love how people quible over tier placements when 99% of players aren't playing their character competently let alone optimally
