We got super lucky with finding this place
Ty and I split the rent mostly equal (he pays slightly more).
Ty is a freelance videographer www.tylerhaft.com and I do UA-cam as my full time job/other side jobs as they come along and have paid my own rent since moving to nyc (I worked full time in retail before)
We actually pay on the low end of the spectrum for NYC as it was important to us to stay on budget so we chose a place with a little more space but no amenities (like dishwasher, laundry in building, central AC etc.) The more roommates you have the less you will pay in general.
Also an important issue, we are not blind to the issues of gentrification but this is what we can afford and have both built lives here. We most frequently support our local businesses, markets and shop owners and support/vote in ways that would help our community. This however doesn't solve the issue and it is very complex but I wanted to note this and is something to think about if considering moving to NYC.
