  • Flickering Myth's Thomas Harris chats with Gaspar Noe about his new film Climax.
    From director Gaspar Noé (Irreversible; Enter the Void; Love) comes a hypnotic, hallucinatory, and ultimately hair-raising depiction of a party that descends into delirium over the course of one wintry night. In Climax, a troupe of young dancers gathers in a remote and empty school building to rehearse. Following an unforgettable opening performance lit by virtuoso cinematographer Benoît Debie (Spring Breakers; Enter the Void) and shot by Noé himself, the troupe begins an all-night celebration that turns nightmarish as the dancers discover they’ve been pounding cups of sangria laced with potent LSD. Tracking their journey from jubilation to chaos and full-fledged anarchy, Noé observes crushes, rivalries, and violence amid a collective psychedelic meltdown. Starring Sofia Boutella (Atomic Blonde) and a cast of professional dancers, Climax is Noé’s most brazen and visionary statement yet.

    Opportunist filmmaking, yet one of the best I've seen solely by its technicalities alone. Reminds me of Malick in his approach. Movie was one of the best cinematic experiences of my life.

    Gaspar is such a talented director and for me I can definitely tell he uses his art as an outlet for a lot of his trauma and inner demons that he, alone, battles with. Hope this isn't a spoiler, but I feel that this movie was a metaphor of his perception of what is going on in the current world. His soundtracks are always the best and about time someone's uses Aphexs Window licker in a movie ! Also like how T Bangalter is always working with him !

    In my opinion, Gasper is a genius filmmaker only for the opposite reasons for which we love someone like Kubrick. He was a perfectionist, and mostly adapted literature, while Gasper only watches documentaries and improvises with his actors so much, yet the coherence in plot, symbolism and craft are always at par. It's remarkable how he handles chaos and creates such important cinema

    Thank you for the interview Gasper. I've watched all of your films and hated most of them because they never struck a chord with me. I understand sex and I understand violence, but for me it was never as cold as you portray it, i've found very few positives in your depiction when for me there was always warmth, comfort and excitement in both. But in this film you captured it perfectly. Thank you for making a film that I felt comfortable with, that I could actually be a part of. Never stop pushing the boundaries, i'd rather hate film than just be bored by it.

      I do understand how people can think this a "nothing" film. But if you've ever done drugs and sort of got lost then this is a perfect recreation, it's like your own memories put on film before the days of mobile phones and shit. If you don't get it then you've had a pretty straight life and shouldn't be watching it. It wasn't made for you.

    • @StayHomeAndDoNOTHING
      @StayHomeAndDoNOTHING 3 роки тому +2

      I guess it depends on what you consider “horror”. I remember being at a party when I was younger and I was trying to impress this chick by taking way too much acid when I was already rolling pretty hard on ecstasy. I had never done acid before but she had so I took what she handed me and had the worst trip ever since I was NOT prepared for it. It was a pretty scary experience trying to keep my shit together around so many people. Maybe it’s not the same as the film, but it reminds me of that panic and fear. I can kind of see the “horror” in the film. Ever had a scary experience that doesn’t actually seem scary from the outside?

    Sorry, while this movie is technically brilliant, the depiction of a bunch of people enduring bad trips on punch spiked with LSD is bullshit. This is a REPRESENTATION of what you FEEL (or even SEE) on a very high dose, not what HAPPENS. Bad trips--and yes they would have probably had bad trips given they were dosed against their wills at very high dosages--do not feature people engaging in the ways they show in this film. They FEEL like they might do those things--they might even see themselves doing them in their mind's eye--but they don't DO them. I would think that anyone who's halfway intelligent would realize this obvious truth. Why? Because out of the billions of people on the planet how many people out there have had this happen or have proof it has happened to someone? "Oh, ZERO" you say except for a rare sociopath which was doing evil before he/she ever took LSD. That's right. Even the real story this is based on did not have ANY of the horrific things depicted in the movie happen! Let that settle in for a minute...
    Anyway, films like this that show absolutely incorrect representations of hallucinogens (which tend to have botched representations far worse than other drugs like say heroin or cocaine) and, as a direct result, people who have not taken them--presumably most people--are led to believe this shit really happens, which keeps them illegal and people going to jail over circumstances I'd argue are not morally justifiable. And yet the scientific facts remain that LSD, mushrooms, and DMT are among the safest of all illicit drugs (I'd wager that even caffeine is more dangerous to one's body or, as we all know, the king killer of smoking is far, far worse for your health). As horrific as a bad trip may feel in terms of utter panic and terror, the worst that can happen in real life (not just in your mind) is that the trip uncovers some trauma (probably in your subconscious) that you can't deal with or triggers latent schizophrenia (which would have surfaced due to ordinary relationship trauma, etc. eventually anyway) and thus you will probably need therapy for a while to get back to baseline.
    But unless you had a serious mental illness before the experience, you WILL return to baseline, be that in a few days, weeks, or (extremely rarely) months and no one is going to die like in this movie (what a horrific kind of thought to make sure you have a bad trip too!)
    It just pisses me off that filmmakers get away with this time and time again because these films fly in the face of the scientific facts and serve basically as an insidious form of propaganda. Mark one more up for anti-science, sensationalized propaganda and "Drugs are bad m'kay!"

    • @Brian-sh5ne
      @Brian-sh5ne 2 роки тому +4

      I don't think the typical people going to see a Gaspar Noe movie will be too vulnerable to anti-drug propaganda. I'd imagine most Noe films attract a crowd that wouldn't be too unfamiliar with hallucinogens. I also don't think the film plot is so unbelievable as to seriously discredit it. Charles Manson's followers for example regularly took LSD, and the one actual reported instance of suicide due to LSD was in an MK Ultra experiment in which a man was unwittingly given LSD by the CIA without consent. I would say the events of Climax are possible. Unlikely? Yes, but most films (even realist films) involve some fantastical, unlikely events. Filmmakers who adapt fiction need not conform their films to the typical events that occur in reality. And I say this all as a supporter of using hallucinogenic drugs in therapeutic contexts, as well as recreational contexts to a lesser degree.
