    I honestly don’t know why this film isn’t talked about or reacted to more. It’s up there with mob classics imo, and the soundtrack is wonderful

      Another score by Thomas Newman overlooked by the damned oscars.

      I wonder if it's looked down on because it's based on a comic book. The impression then might be that it's lower literature.

    So glad the great Paul Newman had a movie like this to wrap up his career. Won the Oscar for best supporting actor. Check out Cool Hand Luke sometime.

    I’m so glad you reacted to this often overlooked gem of a film. I love that you chose this! Such a beautifully shot and told story. Mr Nitty (Stanley Tucci’s character) was based on the real Nitty who worked for Al Capone.

    I like how they show how skilled Sullivan was with the 45 semi auto and Thompson , and how respected and feared he was in the underworld, really yes it’s like the John Wick story , and the actor playing his son grew up and plays Superman now on Superman and Lois think

    This being Paul Newman's last major movie acting role I see it as a passing of the baton from Newman (who was immensely popular in the '50s into the '90s for being an "everyman", someone every man could identify with) to Tom Hanks who has taken over that personna. And it seems to me the director may have seen it that way in casting the two for their roles. It even has Hanks personally taking Newman out with a tommy gun at the end of the film. And the cinematography for that scene, by the way, was breathtaking.

    • @Ceractucus
      @Ceractucus Рік тому

      That scene was a nod to Public Enemy (1931) starring James Cagney. It's the film that made him a star.

    • @itt23r
      @itt23r Рік тому

      @@Ceractucus I don't remember that scene but I don't doubt what you are saying. as I believe there were a lot of interesting references in this movie. The one that sticks out most to me is the bathtub scene where you get just a tiny glimpse of Daniel Craig through the bathroom door mirror as Tom Hanks is walking out.
      And I don't know this for certain but I'd bet that that image was intentionally set up that way to call to mind the famous painting, The Death of Marat, as that is what came to my mind when I first saw it.

    This is a criminally underrated film that most ppl have forgotten or choose not to talk about. The cinematography in this film....it’s impeccable, there are just so many beautifully shot sequences and I was never once bored by the camera work. It won an Oscar for it, and it was well deserved. My only gripe is....I think Tom Hanks is a phenomenal actor and loved watching him in other films BUT IMO I think he was miscast in this film. He did a good job in the father son scenes and he was also good with Paul Newman but I think he didn't fit the role of the mob enforcer Michael Sullivan. I would've preferred it to be Harrison Ford playing that part. Other than that, I loved the tragic story and everyone else was great Paul Newman, Daniel Craig and Jude Law!!

    • @itt23r
      @itt23r Рік тому +4

      I totally agree with you on the cinematography. It was awesome. But the score (which you didn't mention) was equally impeccable and I think Thomas Newman was robbed that year at the Oscars.
      I disagree only with the casting of Tom Hanks. I thought him perfect for the role and largely because he is not what you normally think of as a gangster type. And that is what I think they were going for. They wanted to try to show the duplicity of personality required to be both a family man and a viscious gangster and that there are no stereotypical personalities when it comes to criminality. All in all I consider it one of the finest portrayals ever done by Newman and the finest to date for Hanks.

    Sullivan didn't want to kill Rooney's father (Paul Newman) but he had to before the mob would give in and let them kill Rooney.

    14:48, speaking of "The Untouchables", this is Frank Nitti, played here by Stanley Tucci, and quite differently by Billy Drago in "The Untouchables" (thrown off the roof guy).

    • @jimglenn6972

      Prohibition caused so much destruction. Businesses failed, families were devastated, organized crime made so much bad money and so many people were poisoned by toxic alcohol. My grandfather rarely drank alcohol but he was taken to lunch at a speakeasy and was offered a beer so he said “ok”. He said it was the worst thing he ever drank. I think about mj today. There so important questions but would it be nice if we could take it away from the criminals. It’s far less poisonous than alcohol.

      It basically IS an intentional homage/remake of Lone Wolf & Cub, with the old car replacing the baby carriage.

    I said the same Marian when you said "Why didn't he finish him?" That always bothered me when watching this excellent movie. The only flaw was that a seasoned-hitman would not leave a persistent fellow hitman writhing in pain without finishing him off. And of course, that would comeback to kill him.

    The beach scene from the beginning & later with the sand dunes was filmed not far from Chicago on the Michigan side of Lake Michigan. Sandy beaches all the way up the coast of Michigan. I shot this drone footage on the shore a couple hours north of the movie location.

    26:48 This was a sacrifice; he knew that Rooney's connections is what's keeping Connor safe. If you kill Rooney, then there's no logical reason to protect Connor. That's why this had to be done.

    Different story and different way of using the character, but you may remember Frank Nitti from "The Untouchables". In the final narration Michael says he never picked up a gun again. It's fiction, of course, but if that's so, and this is 1931, then what was he doing a dozen years later during WW II?
