I saw it at the age of 26, back in 2010. A little late to the party, but it blew my mind even then. :P Back when I was still able to suspend my disbelief, have that level of excitability, passion(etc) compared to nearly being 40 at this point in the game and not giving a flying squirrel about movies anywhere near as much as I used to. :P Demons was another wonderful italian horror film I saw at the same age, by Lamberto Bava. Unfortunately, there hasn't been a single other Argento film that's come even remotely close to the experience i had with Suspiria, and I've seen most of them. Deep Red & Phenomena have their moments sprinkled here and there, Inferior was a mediocre follow up to Suspiria, Mother of Tears was terrible, hated Grey flies on Velvet AND Cat o Nine Tails. And Tenenbre? I actually rented that one in the earlier 90's on VHS, and never cared for it, and still don't care for it. That's easily his most overrated piece of work. Although, the Bird with Crystal Plumage, Opera and Two evil eyes weren't too shabby! The latter is a fun cheesy guilty pleasure. :D I think Lucio Fulci films are more off the rails, and overall more entertaining. But none of his movies can top Suspiria.
My first date in high school, with an older girl! We went to this movie and after the opening scene about 5 couples got up and left. After the next blood bath, my girl friend had had enough. I had to go back the next week with my best friend to finish watching it, so scary, so good.
As movie scores go, this is one of the best. This score should be just as well known as Friday the 13th, Halloween, The Omen, Phantasm, and any other iconic horror movie score.
It really does hit every single mark for me. There’s some aspects that are now a little cheesy like the bar scene or the barb wire but imo it adds to the charm rather then detract
Fact 👉Dario Argento's face can be seen reflected on the taxi's glass partition in the opening sequence. Assumed by many people to have been a mistake coming from a rushed shoot, Argento has gone on record to say it was intentional.
2:18 that thing emerging from the sound climax to then dive in again sounds like an alarm going off. Those 'out of place/out of space' sound intrusions paired up with everything going on create a really unique intense claustrophobic terror frenzy like headspace. Those gravel deep rooted underground bass pounding relentlessly like ancient goatskin, it's really weirdly subconsciously fiery ancestral.

I caught their live Suspiria accompaniment a few years ago in Brisbane, Australia, and it was one of my all-time favourite cinema-going experiences. I've loved this soundtrack since I first discovered the movie as a teenager, so experiencing it live was a dream come true. It's so awesome they can tour the world playing to packed cinemas almost half a century later!

I think that's the power of a great horror score that it's so brilliantly terrifying that it even scares you just to listen to it.
