When I heard he might be the next Chelsea coach I was dumbfounded. But after watching this... Idk I'm not gonna lie, kinda intrigued. I wanna go for it and see what happens
Graham was fascinating when he came to Chelsea. Look how he ended. Until Chelsea fixes it recruiting, he will be another promising player who failed at Chelsea. Still surprised they didn't fight to keep Poch. The team was finally looking promising under him. A few ball playing CBs and a top striker would have made them a top team under Poch. But now have a new tactics for the players to learn. I hope McKenna does not suffer the same fate as Graham
Fantastic season for Ipswich since I decided to follow them from a distance as a Yorkshire schoolboy in 1971 Lovely club and given the size of the town a very proud history of punching above their weight The defence needs improvement but with that proviso and keeping the brilliant Keiron Mc Kenna a decent mid table position is well within reach The top five or six clubs in the Premier are obviously first rate but the remainder are beatable
Superb content! The crazy thing about all of this is it’s more or less the same team as our League 1 promotion side, besides Axel and Omari. The system is tailor made for Leif and there’s no one else you’d want on the end of a cutback than Chappers. Will be sad to see some of these players not play in the Prem but so excited for MckennaBall to shock a few more next season. Kieran Mckenna is a genius.
Really good break down on the way we play.. but I’m surprised you missed out a massive part of our attack. Wes Burns wide right. He makes such a difference when we play. A proper old fashioned touch line winger, who’s ridiculously quick.
I was looking at the comments waiting to see if this was mentioned. Burns is a huge part of the success and was missed when he was injured. No coincidence our results in the last three games improved with him back in the side.
its crazy how eddie nketiah ALSO plays a cutback system at arsenal so its no suprise why he would be a great fit for ipswich and he would be relativlely cheap as well
Love the way Ipswich play and what a story but you concede way to many goals, will definitely be a fun team in the prem but think u will have a few embarrassing results
As a Geordie (and Newcastle supporter) who lived in Ipswich for years, I had the pleasure (not so much pleasure) of going to loads of Town games while I was there as I couldn't get home for Newcastle games; the football was always great first half, terrible second and wins were few and far between, so I am really happy they are back in the Premier League, playing great football and hopefully they stay there! Good luck and looking forward to the Bobby Robson derby again.
Enjoyable video sir - if Ipswich are able to keep Kieran McKenna for the full season, he will keep them up - they will finsh just outside the top half - between 11th and 15th
"Loved this video, more of this please :) I am not a football fan actually, but recently I have started to love watching these types of videos. It shows how complex this sport is and how tough it is to be a manager. You need to be a master strategist and tactician. I will be watching more football next season.
How this channel doesn’t have a bigger following blows my mind. Is there some similar football commentary channel that all the other English speaking football fans subscribe to that I’ve never heard of?
You've captured it really well. It's been an exciting way to spend my Saturdays etc. Bring on next season. Ps Southgate, watch Ipswich and copy please.
Should you not also mention how good Kieran McKenna has been at developing players? I think I heard that 8 of the 11 starters for the Huddersfield match were division 1 players in the previous season. For that last game, there was a gulf in performance between Ipswich and Huddersfield. That gulf was best described by the Sky commentators as the difference between a premiership team and a division 1 team - which was effectively what was on show. Ipswich has a total team spending of about £4 million. Leicester defenders alone were valued at £80 million. Kieran McKenna is not only strategically brilliant, as your excellent video demonstrates, but he also excels at doing more with less (at least less on paper, although the whole team proved magnificent at being more than the apparent sum of their collective parts)
I will wait to see some of their 1st games and then come to a conclusion. I had high hopes for Burnley and they have disappointed me this season. The gap between Championship and Premier League is huge.
I don't think the disparity between the premier league and the championship is really too bad tbh i mean all the 3 promoted teams survived in 22/23. The teams that came up last season were just unusually bad this season
As great as the tactic breakdowns are, the real reason we sub and watch videos about teams we don't even care about is that beautiful voice and self-deprecation
and the Davies one is perfect for gusto/james, with cole palmer starting on the right and inverting in. I think a flipped version of his system fits this chelsea squad perfectly
Y'all should be watching videos on Enzo Maresca, not McKenna. McKenna is the man INEOS have always wanted. It was reported (by the United muppeteers) as far back as February.
Great summary overall, however one key play which we often have is when Chaplin comes into the inside-right channel around the halfway line and sweeps it round the corner behind the full back for Burns to run on to.
All with the 16th most valuable squad in the Championship and basically an unchanged squad from their League 1 promotion time, with addition of a couple of loanees.
I'm here to learn about his tactics since he is getting linked to the Chelsea job. I love the fact that his tactics are balanced and he's also flexible.
While I’m not an Ipswich fan, I am a fan of the Socceroos, and with 1 current and 1 former Socceroo on the team… well to have more Australian internationals in the premier league is always brilliant!
The days of Viduka, Kewell, Schwarzer, Lazaridis, Cahill, Bosnich, Neill, Slater and Tiatto are long gone, mate. There aren't too many playing in the EPL these days.
I personally cannot wait to see what McKenna can do in the Premier League. He is the best young manager in Europe, and I would put him above even Alonso and Arteta
As an Ipswich supporter, I am expecting everyone to say we will go back down, just as people said that we would not be able to compete in the Championship last season. Not least, because that is what normally happens, but we are anything but normal. Last season we loser the fewest games, scored the most goals, had the same number of clean sheets as Leicester, 15, conceded the third fewest goals away from home, got the most points from a losing position, had the player with the most assists in the league, the player who won the ball back the most, the most different scorers, the most goals in the last 15 minutes, the most goals from substitutes, the best home record in the league, the second best away record, and our top scorer only scored 13 goals. We sold 97% of our home tickets, the 3% being away tickets not being sold, and we sold out our away allocation every game. We had the highest average league attendance in our history, and sold more than 60,000 shirts, having sold 50,000 in L1. We sold out of season tickets for next season weeks ago, and have already installed three new pitches at the training ground and a new pitch at Portman Road last summer, and will begin building world class training facilities this summer, as well as upgrading to Academy Category One Status. We have only lost 10 games over the last two seasons, got 194 points from 92 games, scored 193 goals and conceded 92, giving us a goal difference of plus 102. We also managed to be the only club int he Championship without a single red card, we had the highest running stats, we are the fittest team, and had the most shots and the most shots in target, as well as having very few penalties considering all that! So, yes, it is a big challenge, yes it is a bigger jump than from L1 to the Championship, but we are more than capable of staying up, and we will be adding four/five/six players, hopefully including Sarmiento continuing his loan and Hutchinson coming back from Chelsea. People are also overlooking g the fact that Leicester are likely to start on minus ten points, there are whispers of other clubs potentially facing financial penalties, whereas we have been praised for our transparent and strong financial position. We have not got to this point by accident, and the progress we make over the next two seasons will not be by accident either.
The gap between the PL and Championship is significantly bigger than it is between the Championship and League One. Burnley thought they were Man City in the Championship last year and they were cannon fodder in the PL. Ipswich need to significantly improve their defense next year or they will struggle to break 20 points.
Lovely to see Luongo’s movement explored- he’s a 6, but he’s a mezzela and a half back and an inverted wing back and I dare say he sweeps the dressing rooms at the end of every game too- there’s nothing the man can’t do. Unsure if he will be able to replicate this in the Premier League or if he will be exposed by lack of cover around him, but I’ll never forget the job he did this season gone by- a pleasure to watch and we were consistently worse when he was out of the side.
Really good analysis. Ipswich will suprise a few people next year. Probably won’t churn the players like Forest. I hope they might recruit a couple of PL experienced defenders, although that seems harsh on the current players. I feel we are more likely to be a Brentford than a Burnley
We'll take survival, much as this season we'd have taken consolidation. There will be changes, new faces coming in, but it will be players that KMc and Ashton will have been looking at for the last six months. We won't do a Forest and change the whole squad. It's a huge gap, hope we can bridge it.
as a Chelsea fan, I hope Hutchinson goes back out on loan to Ipswich next season and he's given the chance to flourish for another year by getting more game time than he'd get in a Chelsea shirt
Hmm so basically it’s a shape shifting team. Reminds me of how SAF has setup Man Utd in the past. His past Utd sides were dominant in possession in some games but does play direct and transitional on some other games. More options to play as the game progresses. But that’s really hard to execute nowadays in the Prem League (or any top tier leagues) though, it’s like jack of all trades improvisation situation which can easily confuse current players and recruitment.
Fantastic analysis. As a Town fan will be happy to finish 17th but I didn't think we'd finish 2nd in the Championship either so who knows what will happen! COYB
It's funny that the world now sees Omari this way. Cos when he showed up at Ipswich he was terrible. He couldn't stay onside to save his life, would lose the ball in 1-1s constantly, and could barely pass let alone get a shot on target. The incredible player he has become is nothing short of miraculous and a true testament to the unbelievable quality of McKenna as a coach and manager. The wonders he has worked with this squad will never be replicated.
An excellent video..I like the statistical analysis combined with the open minded approach to how success happens. I can see some teams in PL will open ipswich up such as beating the press more consistently leading to 20 losses but I can also easily see how they win 10 games. That leaves 8 fixtures which is a buffer to survive
I would be interested to know how the stats break down across the season. George Hirst getting injured meant needing to bring in Moore, which changed the style of play in January to more long ball.
I had my doubts regarding Chelsea wanting to sign Mckenna as the coach. But after watching this, I am genuinely feeling excited. He would really suit to Chelsea
The way you described Ipswich both tactically and statistically makes them sound a little bit like Di Zerbi’s Brighton. But it will be fun to see how far McKenna’s tactics can go next season. Well done to McKenna and Tuanzebe btw. Both are ex United lads 👏🏾
I have noticed McKennas team do try various techniques and waiting games to open up the opposition. They have many ways to open up the opposition and players that understand each others movement. If you could, this is how you'd have your team play I think. Takes long learning time, plus also the defensive patterns have less focus, just score goals! Its the Ipswich way. In the Premier League we will sign 6 defenders and keep an extra player back.
Any Man U fans here after all those reports of ETH being let go after tomorrows game? Feel for ETH but think we were let down by his tactics as much by injuries and lack of discipline
I do love this discourse of the "not having a playstyle" playstyle. And that spot that's just above average for direct speed and just above average for passes per play that seems to be where you find Liverpool, United, Ipswich. So none of them have a playstyle, and yet they all have the same playstyle, which is high press without the ball, and tactical flexibility with the ball. It's almost like, "high press/tactical flexibility" is a playstyle... It's like playing with "Balanced" tactics on FIFA, and there's this crowd that wants to see possession, or direct passes, or direct runs, because it's a clear "style of play". But anyone who knows anything about FIFA will tell you, there are situations where you could easily get goals with a quick counter, but you've told your team to do possession, so all your players come back and show for the ball when they should be running at the space. And there are times where you're getting pressed like mad, and you need your defenders to sit in so you can play out, but you've set it to "Fast Build Up" so your full backs run up the pitch and stand next to the wingers, leaving you completely overrun and exposed. Whereas if you're flexible to the situation you're facing, you're more difficult to work out and should be harder to stop from scoring.
The issue is the quality of player and specifically defender is much better in the prem. The big thing is in those clips the Champ teams are not pressing the ball but players. More teams in the prem press the ball and counter press the attacking team. Certainly interesting in that Ipswich look to have a balanced set of tactics which will help them greatly...the old plan A and plan B. Or just good old situational variety depending on the specifics of the match. You do need a heck of a midfielder/s though to make that work. Which I think is increasingly important in the Prem. Roy Ball/Dyche ball etc doesn't work so well anymore.
This is very exciting! I hope Chelsea gets this over the line, and I hope Mckenna has the balls to go for it. Yes, it will be interesting tough, but high risk high reward!
Ipswich were a midtable club in terms of budget last year. Most of their starting 11 comes from players with 0 Pl experience, who came as either loan signings from top PL clubs or very shrewd deals from championship, league 1/2 clubs. Mckenna is a great coach and hes took his players to a level no one thought possible and achieved something magnificent, but they need some serious recruitment to survive, never mind thrive. lets hold before saying theyre perfect. Though i truly hope they stay up and we get to see the players there and mckenna become top class. especially excited to see how mckenna develops his style and coaching over the next few years.
If we recruit too heavily I think we'll struggle. We are a team, not a collect of great players. We must be careful not to forget that. That's what Burnley did and look what happened.
@@neilemms5831 i think if you replace the whole team then yh you will. but you defo need some prem experience and talents you can sell on. The way luton did it basically, but a little more adventurous. Probably a midfielder and a centerback with prem experience then a few young signings to bed in in the front. Plus you need to replace key loan signings like hutchinson, hed be great if you can get him again, or maybe look for someone like amad Diallo.
I heard someone describe their style a "conscious possession based system" they don't just want possession and hold on to the ball and end up doing nothing with it, you usually find the more you hold on to the ball after a certain point the other team becomes tighter and you need to recycle the ball to try and draw them out of position. Ipswich want the ball when it suits them, and will try and work in it into a goal scoring position and they wont rush if they don't have, but they also refuse to camp outside of the oppositions box passing the ball around waiting for an opportunity. Ipswich would much rather get the shot away give the other team possession back and go at it again.
Moved to ipswich from Tottenham ddcade ago now best move I made footy has been a bonus 👌 I followed them when no one was in the stadium all the way up to today. 🎉
Not knocking the manager and his tactics but I question if chelsea has the players to play this style of football. I can pick out players who would struggle to play this style; and I'm obviously going off last season.
4 losses and 4 draws against the rest of the top top 6 doesn't paint a good picture on how they deal with strong opponents, looks quite exciting overall, but they probably need some big upgrades to make it work in the prem and try to survive
You should of added With the way McKenna has inproved the players especially Hutchinson and Leif i genuinely feel any top club in europe will be begging us to take there young players on loan, If we spend wisely and use the loan market like we have last year we should be safe from the drop, we need to keep level headed in the market and not go stupid, but i do feel with the board and McKenna we are in safe hands there.
I'm a lifelong Norwich City supporter, so it is with some trepidation that I express my hopes that The Tractor Boys do well in the Premier League. Firstly, because if they do succeed in staying up there it will be a non big money way of getting to, and surviving in the EPL. Which may encourage, and give hope to us Canary fans who have yo-yo'd more than we like!
This sounds exactly like how Man Utd played with McKenna as a coach there. He was the coach in the only time the club has managed back to back top 4 finishes, nice to see everyone finally giving him his flowers

Ipswich 5-0 Man United
Ten Hag masterclass incoming. Heard it here first
Can't wait to see it!!
😅😅😅
depends is there martinez+varane+shaw or evans+casemiro+lindelof
Ten Hag masterclass indeed 🪄
Unfortunately he won't be in the job long enough to achieve that feat.
Let's hope Mckenna can get them top 10
No coincidence our results in the last three games improved with him back in the side.
its crazy how eddie nketiah ALSO plays a cutback system at arsenal so its no suprise why he would be a great fit for ipswich and he would be relativlely cheap as well
What do you define as relatively cheap?
£20million!!
@@JoolsUK he's probably worth around that but I reckon arsenal will want more

Fucks sakes, I’ve been trying to calm down after the game on Saturday, now I can’t bloody wait for August!!!
Good luck and looking forward to the Bobby Robson derby again.
dont think im ever gonna get used to seeing my team on your channel
You’re welcome mate this is what i do lad. Poppa condoms. Poppa condoms. Pop a proper Whopper copper condom on.
This channel makes learning about tactics actually fun 😂
Keep it up guys
You've captured it really well. It's been an exciting way to spend my Saturdays etc. Bring on next season. Ps Southgate, watch Ipswich and copy please.
love Adam, the boy is football analysis and he also knows wrestling too. great presenting too.
I loved this video, never seen such a detailed breakdown of the team and tactics! Uppa Towen 😊
I thought so too but they made too many changes
I don't think the disparity between the premier league and the championship is really too bad tbh i mean all the 3 promoted teams survived in 22/23. The teams that came up last season were just unusually bad this season
The gap between championship to prem is the fat bird outta baby reindeer and margot robbie 😁
@@jontalbot1Exactly and having an average age of 24 yrs old(2nd youngest in the prem)as a promoted team was bold, too bold.
Ipswich were lucky Leeds losing at home to Blackburn and Sunderland and Coventry and QPR in the run in embarrassing
Here to see what Chelsea directors are sold out on 😂😂. Who else is also here because of Chelsea 😂😂
I want to see a breakdown of Notts County in League Two. Over 80 goals scored and over 80 goals conceded
The old Kevin Keegan philosophy of if they score 4 we score 5
As great as the tactic breakdowns are, the real reason we sub and watch videos about teams we don't even care about is that beautiful voice and self-deprecation
that Loungo role is perfect for Enzo
and the Davies one is perfect for gusto/james, with cole palmer starting on the right and inverting in. I think a flipped version of his system fits this chelsea squad perfectly
Y'all should be watching videos on Enzo Maresca, not McKenna. McKenna is the man INEOS have always wanted. It was reported (by the United muppeteers) as far back as February.
Forget it you guys want to be the next city, go with de zerbi, kmc is coming bck home ggmu
Great video...I hope they're top half but so far they've never ceased to surprise me 😊
While I’m not an Ipswich fan, I am a fan of the Socceroos, and with 1 current and 1 former Socceroo on the team… well to have more Australian internationals in the premier league is always brilliant!
The days of Viduka, Kewell, Schwarzer, Lazaridis, Cahill, Bosnich, Neill, Slater and Tiatto are long gone, mate. There aren't too many playing in the EPL these days.
this seems like exactly the type of team that will score 4 against ETH's MU
It won't be EtH's Man United for long.

@@OserojiemenKing Agreed.......McKenna will have taken his job by the end of May.
I want to see Adam Clery start a podcast with Joe Devine and JJ Bull from TIFO. It'd be epic madness.
This ☝️👏
@@IDGAFAS I'm a Bolton fan i hold off saying anything until I see the transfer window. Ipswich are a proper club and I want you to stay up
Nice to see such well-informed and thoughtful comments.
The gap between the PL and Championship is significantly bigger than it is between the Championship and League One. Burnley thought they were Man City in the Championship last year and they were cannon fodder in the PL. Ipswich need to significantly improve their defense next year or they will struggle to break 20 points.
Time will tell. Hopefully you stay up but it all depends on retaining your best players especially loan players from the PL like Omari...
Wow, I’m a ST holder at Portman road and just learnt a lot - cheers!
Now the analysis on McKenna at Chelsea please!
Absolutely superb video. A seasoned season ticket holder at ITFC and I learnt
Really good analysis.
Ipswich will suprise a few people next year. Probably won’t churn the players like Forest. I hope they might recruit a couple of PL experienced defenders, although that seems harsh on the current players. I feel we are more likely to be a Brentford than a Burnley
I love this adam guy tbh
We'll take survival, much as this season we'd have taken consolidation. There will be changes, new faces coming in, but it will be players that KMc and Ashton will have been looking at for the last six months. We won't do a Forest and change the whole squad. It's a huge gap, hope we can bridge it.
as a Chelsea fan, I hope Hutchinson goes back out on loan to Ipswich next season and he's given the chance to flourish for another year by getting more game time than he'd get in a Chelsea shirt
Great analysis. Wes Burns needed a mention though. Absolute legend
One of the amazing stats is that our top goal scorers were both on 13 and none of the two are the main striker, you can see why from your explanation.
Genuinely my tactic on footie manager for years. Works a treat (evidently)
How do you set up your team to alternate between short passing and direct footy without switching tactics in-game
The same thing you all said about Kompany (Burnley) and Sheffield United. Championship is different from EPL. I only blame the clueless Chelsea owners
I love he comment, "they look like a mid table premier side, they should be fine". Please keep saying things like that :)
If he moves to Chelsea, get Graham Potter.
Really enjoyed understanding why the Tractor Boys have been so good to watch this season
There is something very special about this Ipswich team, with the correct signings in the summer i believe they will surprise many
I would be interested to know how the stats break down across the season. George Hirst getting injured meant needing to bring in Moore, which changed the style of play in January to more long ball.
I had my doubts regarding Chelsea wanting to sign Mckenna as the coach. But after watching this, I am genuinely feeling excited. He would really suit to Chelsea
You're not getting him
Kompany IN!
Enzo in!!!!
No.
That was the best outro you've ever done.
Great work bro
Really hoping Adam is taking better care of his bed linens these days.
Looks like an approach that suits chelseas squad very very well
Question is low blocks and of he can handle press/star players
Watching because he’s joining Chelsea
Did not fool me . I knew you would say all three... Because I knew he's on the top
Plus you need to replace key loan signings like hutchinson, hed be great if you can get him again, or maybe look for someone like amad Diallo.
watch us we will survive will easily.
@@SoccerFix1 I hope you do. enjoyed watching you this year.
We will finish top 8
next video on McKenna in Chelsea, please! now I'm intrigued
I can remember having quite a few Ipswich players in the Premier League sticker book
A video breaking down on Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace pls
Who's here after pochetinno left chelsea😂?
Brilliant video. Will share
The intro phrase : "hello my little vegetables" 😅😂
Fantastic breakdown. 🔵⚪️🚜
I'm a lifelong Norwich City supporter, so it is with some trepidation that I express my hopes that The Tractor Boys do well in the Premier League. Firstly, because if they do succeed in staying up there it will be a non big money way of getting to, and surviving in the EPL. Which may encourage, and give hope to us Canary fans who have yo-yo'd more than we like!
omari is a baller and a half
This sounds exactly like how Man Utd played with McKenna as a coach there. He was the coach in the only time the club has managed back to back top 4 finishes, nice to see everyone finally giving him his flowers
Great analysis as usual Adam 🫡 its going to be tough for them, and, as a Gooner I hate them for 1978 😂 If they can keep hold of the squad and add to it for next season maybe they stand a chance 🤷🏻♂️
Hopefully the team next season will be largely unchanged with just a few new strengthening players brought in. Team spirit at the moment is fantastic
I have a feeling they will do well they are tenacious and dig in when need to but they play decent football
Can't wait for their first game against Liverpool. It should be very interesting with the new manager Slot versus McKenna.
If Untied get him, im guessing most will scream no playstyle again.
