Winter Solstice - 22 December 2020

- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- The Office of Public Works’ annual Winter Solstice gathering at the Neolithic Passage Tomb of Newgrange on 21 December was cancelled this year, due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions.
The hugely significant Solstice Sunrise event was live-streamed from within the Chamber, on the 20th, 21st and 22nd of December, so that everyone could experience this wonderful phenomenon from any location around the world.
During the closure, an archaeological research project was carried out at the 5,200 year old Newgrange monument where we scientifically measured and monitored the movement of the winter sunlight coming through the roof box into the passage and chamber, to determine how the beam of dawn light interplays with the chamber as we move towards Solstice and then past it.
Results of this research project will be issued in 2021.
Live recording officially commences at 9.05mins on this Video (Please fast-forward)
For those of us on scattered soils, far away from our ancestral roots, our spirits remain connected to the beautiful and magical lands of IRE Scotland England and Wales. It has long been a dream of mine to visit and touch the soil, gaze upon the wonders they may have seen, hear the sound of their language, acknowledge the hardships they must have endured, and pay homage to those who's DNA I still carry and to their spirit for which I am forever connected. To visit the Henge near Yorkshire that bears my surname would be an experience I cannot describe with simple words. Thank you folks for the chance to watch and blessings to all!
Well done Clare and Frank and the OPW. I was enthralled. Superb work. I can't wait to revisit.
It's been a magical 3 days. I can't help feeling that everything happened as it should. How many more of us have reconnected with the land, the sky, our heritage and our ancestors because of this? I felt like I was sitting around a fire listening to Clare and Frank tell stories. It's been such a beautiful experience and I cannot thank you all enough. Wishing you all a warm, happy and healthy Winter and here's to the return of the light 💕☘️🙏
An Irishman living abroad...as are many of us...such a beautiful reminder of home and heritage. Well done to the OPW. Happy Christmas to all.
e
Magnificent, thank you so much. Returning to Ireland after 31 years in Quebec Canada. January 6th can’t come fast enough! My husband and I are looking forward to discovering Ireland once again.
Thank you so much for making it possible to share these wonderful moments at a distance
Well done to Clare, Frank & the OPW from Lough Gur. Incredible work and exceptional footage. Thanks for the Lough Gur mention!
I was there in 2019 some 200 years after my ancestors left Ireland in 1818 to settle in North Carolina, USA. Such a magical place and thanks to all that have preserved this monument. Merry Christmas. The Tweed Family.
Thank you so much! My cousin in Ireland shared the link last week - I feel so privileged to have a chance to see and experience the Winter Solstice at Newgrange. So well done - all of us around the world thank you for the wonderful insights!
Thanks to all involved for bringing this wonderful moment to us all over the last three days. Very informative too 🙏
I couldn't imagine a better commentary than what you have provided us with in these three days, and the lovely imagery is a balm for the eyes and soul
From Russell & Lyn, Thanks to you all who put these programs on for us: you have so greatly enriched our experience of this year's solstice.
(Paddy Bohan) Thank you for a magical experience.
When I was a teenager(1955/6 probably) I rode my bicycle from Knockharley to see Newgrange, Nowth and Dowth but everything was locked up. I do remember peering through the iron gate. I have visited Newgrange more recently and found it fascinating. ( Now exiled in Wiltshire-- so must visit Stonehenge soon!)
Can't thank you enough for showing this amazing event. The commentary was outstanding and added to the joy of watching the event. I'm in Australia and watched every moment - my Irish heritage brought me close to the spiritual and I thank everyone involved.
Thank You So Much to OPW for bringing this online over the last 3 days. it's been such a beautifully contemplative time watching the light move through Newgrange and to have the wonderful discussion between Claire and Frank. Someone mentioned in the comments below that it would be nice to have more sessions like this from other sites in Ireland.. A great idea!
Thank you for sharing the majesty of Newgrange with the world. Happy Solstice from Canada.
This is my first year watching any live video of this event. Thank you so much for your narration and informative presentation. Amazing to see what it looked like before excavations and restoration in the mid 20th Century. If you could next year, in addition to UA-cam, please present this on Facebook Live and Twitter as well if it doesn't cost you too much. Wonderful and so glad we're all able to experience two mornings of sunlight into the chamber. A Winter Solstice blessing to you both.
Beautiful production and lovely warm words. Thank you for bringing this into our homes. I've really enjoyed it. Our ancestors were phenomenal!
What a wonderful 3 days, thankyou to all especially Clare and Frank, you have made my christmas 🥰.
This was a truly beautiful experience. I am so grateful for your livestreaming so that I can still participate in this experience all the way from Canada.
Thank you, all. How restorative this was to experience, with you, the return cycle of the sun.
Good morning, indeed.
GRMMA it has been beyond words to watch the broadcasts , thank you all so much for providing something wonderful in these oddest of times !!
Thank you again for helping reground humankind to the totality of our worldly existence and timeless knowledge. Your humble and thorough presentation pulled us in and filled us with new old knowledge and hope! Hugs from Montana where we witnessed The Great Conjunction in a clear sky atop the Continental Divide!
Thank you so much! These three broadcasts were the absolute highlight of my solstice season. Thank you Frank and Claire. Your voices and thoughts made this phenomenon even more special.
Thank you for sharing this with the world! A beautiful and emotional experience from afar. Blessings to all as the light returns!
Thank you so much for the fantastic experience over the past three days! Magical!! Happy Solstice! 🌞🌞
Thank you so much for this wonderful dawn in a very dark year. I hope to visit again, from the US in happier times, it has been too many years. It seems the world has won the Lottery with the help of you team.
Thank you so much. I feel humbled and privileged to be able to see this incredible moment.
Thank you to all involved. Wonderfully moving and hopeful. Solstice blessings
Thank you. Thank you so so much for sharing. Your efforts are appreciated. This has been such a boon and a blessing, listening to these stories and feeling your warmth and well wishes from such a sacred space.
Thankyou, very enriching and calming.
Excellent ,where there is light there is hope...god bless you
This was truly amazing! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much from New York. Having been to Newgrange, seeing this is magical.
Deo gracias, Summer is on its way back. How wonderful are the creations of His hand
As a boy I fished all along the loop of the Boyne with Jimmy Fagan. Some of my fondest memories revolve around Rosnaree with the tumulus looking down on us. What a magical place!
It is wonderful to hear the dawn chorus as well which has been much quieter here in the north in Canada.
Big thanks from Nova Scotia 🌕
Wow, that was just simply truly amazing..
God bless you all,🙏🎥
These three streams were so lovely, even though I didn't watch them live (sunrise in Ireland is mumble o'clock in California). Thanks so much for putting them together.
Excellent, great to be able to see this occasion. Thanks OPW.
This is pretty and awesome. Love to see this in real life one day. Hope🙂🙏🌞🔥☘🍀
1989, i was there, such an important site ,all the feelings and questions that live inside my being, you see it and its a forever feeling.
Thank you 🙏🙏🙏💚💚💚
Would be great if you both continue this, visiting all the other sites. There is a big audience on utube for this type of broadcast.
greetings from ŁÓDŹ - Poland :-))
My mother used be taken with her class at school to view the Solstice at Newgrange before the redevelopment. The children used play in Knowth during the year.
Bbu na Boinne, a place of wonder, myth and great historical significance, where rests the body of Diarmuid after his death on Ben Bulben. The works of the old scholars and poets being read now would add wonder and enchantment.
Beautiful
Never heard of this until Shane Breslin linked it in a blog. I don't know why we spend our short time on earth being so evil to each other when we could instead sit and stand in awe of wonders such as this and love instead.
Nice
At 16:50 the official indicates that the angle has changed and now it is 4 minutes after sunrise the light enters the chamber.
Am I correct in saying that the sun rises more toward the north then it did when the tomb was constructed?
Thanks for this.
Are there recordings of the live streams?
We were watching yesterday, but couldn’t today unfortunately.
What is the music at the beginning? I don't see any artist credits.
Sorry Steve I won't watch any videos that are to far off. We are still on 2021 and looking at the winter solstice or Christmas. Not next year yet.
I respect the presenters but for this I wish they weren't there. We don't need a running commentary
Philip, for me the commentary was informative and revealing - but for someone who has a sense of the place from personal experience, it could detract from the air of mystery.
Fascinating stuff... And irrefutable evidence of our spherical Earth and elliptical orbit
Truly lovely - I associate myself with all the positive posts here. But sorry now to become depressing negative - what is this mutilation so-called 'restoration'? It is totally ghastly, Disneyesque, zero to indicate this is a very ancient, sacred place - I'm referring to the external features solely. It seems like some amusement park re-enactment not a place that may been constructed 5,400 years ago. What's with the external wall - it seems Home Depot brickwork? The roofing also seems so fake - should include a leprechaun? I welcome each and every negative observation here to be dismissed, demolished and I'll feel better!
