The mountains of Pomeroy
The morn was breaking bright and fair,
The lark sang in the sky,
Wheb the maid she bound her goIden hair,
With a blithe glance in her eye;
For, who beyond the gay green-wood,
Was a-waiting her with joy,
Oh, who but her gallant Renardine,
On the mountains of Pomeroy.
An outlawed man in a land forlorn,
He scorned to turn and fly,
But kept the cause of freedom safe
Up on the mountains high.
Full often in the dawning hour,
Full oft in twilight brown
He met the maid in the woodland bow'r,
Where the stream comes foaming down
For they were faithful in a love
No wars could e'er destroy.
No tyrant's law touched Renardine,
On the mountains of Pomeroy.
"Dear love, " she said, "l'm sore afraid,
For the foeman's force and you
They've tracked you in the lowland plain
And all the valley through.
My kinsmen frown when you are named
Your life they would destroy
'Beware,' they say, 'of Renardine,
On the mountains of Pomeroy."
"Fear not, fear not, sweetheart," he cried,
"Fear not the foe for me
No chain shall fall, whate'er betide,
On the arm that would be free!
Oh, leave your cruel kin and come,
When the lark is in the sky.
And it's with my gun I'll guard you,
On the mountains of Pomeroy."
The morn has come, she rose and fled
From her cruel kin and home;
And bright the wood, and rosy red,
And the dumbling torrent's foam.
But the mist came down and the tempest roared,
And did all around destroy;
And a pale, drowned bride met Renardine,
On the mountains of Pomeroy.
this is the best version of this song that i have heard.
This is one great song, I have listened to many versions but this is really good and I love it. One other version that I listen to is sung by Seamus Begley and accompanied by Jim Murray. No matter who sings it, I love the song
Brilliant version of a great Tyrone song . The best Tyrone song of them all.
This Song was writing by a famous Tyrone Man George Sigerson from Strabane.
Great Song.
Amhran den chead scoth.
Excellent
There is also a great "live" version of this song by Barley Bree who were based in Halifax, Nova Scotia in the 80's. They were Tom and Jimmy Sweeney from Omagh (nephews of Tommy Makem) and P.V. O'Donnell from Donegal. It's probably no longer available but it was called Barley Bree Live.
Great song!:)
I use to sing along, even im from Norway:)
As a child on holiday at a relatives farm in Tyrone in the 1950s-60s I recall a little of going to mass there on Sundays. I don't think there was much to it if I remember correctly: church, shop to buy stuff sweets and maybe get batteries charged for radios (no electricity in the farms then!). Might be confusing it with Galbally though! Actually probably am. Pomeroy maybe was for bigger shopping. Dungannon was the metropolis!
i must say this is one of my favorite songs. eventhou that might not be saying much with me being half bergensk half irish. but ive shown this to many of me norwegian mates. and they all focking love it^^.

I was doing a gig at The Poets Corner one Sunday dinner time in Nottingham. There always used to be a fair few old Irish men, who'd just come from mass.
One old chap asked for this one - which I 'd never heard of at the time. he assured me it was a rebel song. is there rebel subtext, that I can't hear?
A lovely performance here by the way.
Thsi song made me cry for a few reasons. Its a sad song witha sad air, and I have to say this is the most beautiful version I ever heard. Its the place of my childhood and youth, now a distant memory. Its an area known for resistance to the enemy to this day, and sadly men who spoke at the funerals of those who died have now joined forces with the oppressors, just as Shane Bernard O'Donnaille's journeyman tailor done all those years ago.

Beautttt of a song nice...
This is a great song; I can't understand why it isn't more often recorded.
Being from the main street and having left a long time ago this song brings back so many great memories. This version does not do the song any justice, check out the version on Cathal Haydens CD sung by Seamus Begley. Up the Plunketts.
hits me heart..
There is a another version complete with the irish Bagpipes By A Gilligam, produced by Bill McBurney, (outlet records) sung again with great passion!
@daver852

Lad Lane also does a wonderful recording of it.

Beautiful song. I just posted a video of the instrumental of that song by the Brock McGuire band.
This is to my maths from the town he mind me of Joe moore
Very nice version but I'm used to hearing a different version (more up-tempo, with slightly different words). There's an excerpt of the upbeat tune posted by clarebannerman from the Kilrush Fleadh 1966.
This is the best version ever. Who are the performers?
yes I think its originally sung at a higher tempo, its because its more a march song
Please somebody tell me where i can buy this version of the track
