I had worked in theatre previously and seen the wonders that makeups and costumes altered actors' looks, character, etc. An actor can look beautiful and youthful on stage, but when makeups and costumes come off, he is a different person. Fans don't see actors' skin blemishes beneath makeups, baldness under wigs and hair extensions, and so on.

His acting in this movie has improved since "The sheik". Iv been a fan of Rudi since I was a kid. I watched both movies in the MGM (Vegas) before it burned down. Their theater was so beautiful. The seats were little sofas. Anyway, yeah, love Rudi.
Oh yes, that was the consensus when it premiered. I think Valentino's acting is so nuanced. Banky is divine. The "action" is well-directed and attention-grabbing and the close up shots of the lovers are gorgeous. The last shot of them riding off together across the sands....off into an eternity together. - Sounds romantic? Films could make huge statements like that and truly move people way back then.

A brilliant movie with a neat plot and an exciting finish to boot! As has already been suggested by the historical evidence, this film evidently did have a marked influence on the development of the eventual script for the "Desert Song" operetta which came shortly afterwards. I was happily surprised to note that Rudolph Valentino had much, much more of an expressive face than I had myself been expecting and was able to convey quite a range of emotions throughout the drama during this bygone age of cinema in its purest form.
This is the same video but not the same sound. I have the original version of it and the music makes every scene more vibrant and dramatic. This was still an amazing video to find on youtube! Valentino has always been one of my favorite actors, ever since the third grade. He was beautiful, smart, and one of the finest actors in Hollywood who took his role seriously. When other actors would talk about random things during the silent movies, with the same gestures, Valentino said every one of his lines and placed emphasis on his words. You can almost tell when comparing his role to other stars in other silent films. He acted better in his one than the original Sheik movie to me. I cried when I found out he had passed away so young. I mean, just looking at his face when he's beaten or his heart is breaking, it rivals the statue of David.

Vilma Banky one of the most beautiful women in the world at the time. An incredibly gorgeous woman! The music is a bit to overstated. Where you need slower romantic themes, it sounds like action or a fight is going on. But not bad. I'm only 5 and half minutes in. But characters had individual themes in real Silent film scores.
Yes Rudy had gotten sick when he was filming Son of the sheik and was in terrible pain and had to be helped off his horse and was told that he needed to see a doctor but it passed
Having read the Sheik and its sequel, I notice some of Ahmed's characteristics in the first book got into the second film. There are some scenes in the first movie where his character looks like a spoiled petulant boy to me; perhaps that is intended or it is Valentino's youthful age that gives it away. Nevertheless, it's an iconic role. In "Son of the Sheik" movie, Ahmed Jr. looks like a full-grown man at the height of his power. Valentino's attire, revealing his strong arms, lends to that strength. The way he glowers at Yasmine after thinking she betrayed him and claims her as his own; it mirrors the relentless behavior of Ahmed in the original book.
The thing is, He made more Effort than Others in the SILENT ERA -- did u Know that He had his Scripts printed up in 2 LANGUAGES, so He wouldn't miss a NUANCE. This Factored into his Attitude on Screen, & his MARVELOUS GESTURES. Of course, since He was a dancer, he had Natural Poise & wonderful Hand movements.
It was during the filming of this movie, which began in Feb. 1926, that it became clearly evident that Rudy was already ill....on horseback, he suddenly doubled over in pain and Karl Dane, who played Ramadan, assisted him off the horse...the pain passed, but the path was set for the further deterioration of Rudy's health. June Mathis visited the set and urged him to take a long rest...Sadly, Rudy ignored the warnings and he passed that August....

I always enjoy reading the place card descriptions in these films they are sometimes flowery and verbose with cloyingly descriptive allusions to to the unspoken desire for sex. It’s no wonder he was a heartbreaker in his day also it is reflective of certain style of archaic speech that is politely well mannered and fascinating from the time period everything is written with such deliberate measured language I wish we spoke with half as much erudite intonation today

I've heard allot of scores to SON OF THE SHEIK William Perry piano score. Lee Erwin Theater Organ,. The 1937 Re-issue track with Orchestra, And Eric Beheim score from cue sheets. Excerpts of the Gaylord Carter score. Which has a couple great melodies. TCM debuted a new Restoration a couple of years ago. A lovely tinted print from David Shepard's film preservation associates. Not the same as the 2002 Image DVD with both THE SHEIK and SON OF THE SHEIK though that was from Shepard too. The new transfer of both films are much better quality. However, back to the music. This score is completely new to me, and I like it so far! Where did it come from?
Rudolph Valentino had a beautiful profile & smile. Those gorgeous, smouldering, eyes. I can look at this film a number of times. And, I have done so. It’s a charming film, nearly 100 years later, & with no vocal dialogue. It’s all expression. Not only is Rudolph Valentino so gorgeous. So sexually alluring. His facial expressions & body language are so expressive. It’s brilliant watching him. Quite hypnotic to see his many expressions he is able to convey. He also looks so powerful & strong in this movie. Hard to believe he would not live to see the effect the film had on audiences of that time when it was finally released to the public after his death. Especially the effect it had on his female fans. I personally think it’s his best work he had done up until then. All the passion & sensuality are on high steroids with him. Yet he must have had warning pains. It would seem he just chose to ignore them. Maybe he was trying to prove his masculinity after being attacked by several for being too effeminate by so many envious & jealous men. All because he had such sex appeal & charisma. He wore the latest fashion - a wrist watch, a man’s bracelet, dapper clothes. He could dance beautifully & had the women swooning over him. How his friends, & especially Polo Negri whom he was dating at the time, did not insist on him seeing a Doctor for a checkup is quite mystifying. Polo Negri was aware he had bouts of pain well before he collapsed. She mentioned this fact when they were invited to parties & social occasions. Rudy had also mentioned it to several people that he thought he was having pain in the appendix area. He doctored himself with huge amounts of bicarbonate of soda instead. Had they made him go to the Doctor it might have saved his life. Instead the appendix burst together with an ulcer & infection set in. Sadly, Antibiotics were not available until 1928. So the sepsis & peritonitis were what caused his actual demise. That could bring anyone down, even today. Such a sad ending, & loss, of a great silent movie actor endowed with so many talents. So very sad. Because despite that fact he left an amazing body of work for fans to enjoy long after he was gone. All of the actors are fantastic. The delightful humour in various scenes. It adds a layer of delight & charm to this film. The background is also so great with the camels, the goats being. herded. The special watering cans that are used in the Middle East. The tables & furnishings. The wonderful costumes that are worn. Attention paid in such detail. The various well worn Trollops in a den of thieves. The one enjoying a bowl of something & then licking her fingers enjoying her delicacy. The heavy smoking wenches hardened from too many escapades. The flirting done by one heavy-set lady with the diminutive actor adds a layer of laughter & interest. The water pipe smoking all in the background. I love looking for those details. All these add so much charm to a film where actors only used their faces & bodies to tell a story. Rudolph Valentino was a master of those expressions needed in a scene. What tenderness, anger, doubt, sensitivity, sensuality, he was able to display throughout this film. I can well believe how he got the women fans all hot & bothered with his passion & beautifully tender love scenes. With the promise of what was yet to come. Sex & desire begin in the mind. And those scenes of Rudolph Valentino’s tap into that very timeless idea. It no doubt set a women’s pulses racing. Those scenes even get to you today, 100 years later. Rudolph Valentino had it all in bucket fulls. It’s rare to see an actor who can draw you in like he can. The ideal fantasy man to most women, of that time, & also, today. What woman would not love to have all those displays of love & desire shown to her with all that buildup. It’s all beautifully re-enacted by Rudolph Valentino. No wonder he said it’s the image on screen that women mostly fall in love with. It’s not reality. Nobody can keep that up for too long. Especially when a relationship has weathered all kinds of outside issues coming in on them called real life. But it’s nice to feel it, & see it on full display, for a while. That’s why I can look at this film several times. I find something new to admire, all over again, when looking at the background detail input of this film.

I was happily surprised to note that Rudolph Valentino had much, much more of an expressive face than I had myself been expecting and was able to convey quite a range of emotions throughout the drama during this bygone age of cinema in its purest form.
They just don't make movies like this anymore-priceless!
This is the same video but not the same sound. I have the original version of it and the music makes every scene more vibrant and dramatic. This was still an amazing video to find on youtube! Valentino has always been one of my favorite actors, ever since the third grade. He was beautiful, smart, and one of the finest actors in Hollywood who took his role seriously. When other actors would talk about random things during the silent movies, with the same gestures, Valentino said every one of his lines and placed emphasis on his words. You can almost tell when comparing his role to other stars in other silent films. He acted better in his one than the original Sheik movie to me.
I cried when I found out he had passed away so young. I mean, just looking at his face when he's beaten or his heart is breaking, it rivals the statue of David.

A side point (and a good one ) IF Rudy were alive in our time, doctors would have administered sulfur drugs and penicillin for his peritonitis. He MOST likely would have lived!
He has the perfect face. Those latin good looks. A fine looking man. Would he have become such an icon had he lived to an old age? His career might not have lasted into the sound age due to his thick Italian accent. He probably would've faded into obscurity like so many other actors. Many people think that he would have made the transition to sound very well. He had a melodious baritone voice and his accent has been described as "minimal". The only surviving recordings of his voice are of him singing two songs, Relicare, in Italian, and the Kashmiri Love Song in English, available on UA-cam. Not a trained voice but pleasant and with good support. I think he would have been awesome in the talkies.

Vilma Banky one of the most beautiful women in the world at the time. An incredibly gorgeous woman! The music is a bit to overstated. Where you need slower romantic themes, it sounds like action or a fight is going on. But not bad. I'm only 5 and half minutes in. But characters had individual themes in real Silent film scores.

Having read the Sheik and its sequel, I notice some of Ahmed's characteristics in the first book got into the second film. There are some scenes in the first movie where his character looks like a spoiled petulant boy to me; perhaps that is intended or it is Valentino's youthful age that gives it away. Nevertheless, it's an iconic role.
In "Son of the Sheik" movie, Ahmed Jr. looks like a full-grown man at the height of his power. Valentino's attire, revealing his strong arms, lends to that strength. The way he glowers at Yasmine after thinking she betrayed him and claims her as his own; it mirrors the relentless behavior of Ahmed in the original book.
Rudolph Valentino was born a gorgeous young man...but I think he brought more to the role! ...He was remembered well! :)
The thing is, He made more Effort than Others in the SILENT ERA -- did u Know that He had his Scripts printed up in 2 LANGUAGES, so He wouldn't miss a NUANCE. This Factored into his Attitude on Screen, & his MARVELOUS GESTURES.
Of course, since He was a dancer, he had Natural Poise & wonderful Hand movements.
It was during the filming of this movie, which began in Feb. 1926, that it became clearly evident that Rudy was already ill....on horseback, he suddenly doubled over in pain and Karl Dane, who played Ramadan, assisted him off the horse...the pain passed, but the path was set for the further deterioration of Rudy's health. June Mathis visited the set and urged him to take a long rest...Sadly, Rudy ignored the warnings and he passed that August....

During the confinement at home have been watching old "Black & White" films and film history is incomplete without watching a film from the silent era of Rudolph.Valentino.This was the last film of Valentino and the kissing scenes answers the question was Rudolph.Valentino the first ever screen superstar ? Yes is the answer as the hysteria of his death proved the fact among legions of his female fans. As for his male fans he must have definitely been responsible for making cigarette smoking a fashion statement. The dwarf comedian could also be a reason for this film being a super-hit of its era.A must watch film and definitely the best or one of the best film of Valentino . Ahoy !

I always enjoy reading the place card descriptions in these films they are sometimes flowery and verbose with cloyingly descriptive allusions to to the unspoken desire for sex. It’s no wonder he was a heartbreaker in his day also it is reflective of certain style of archaic speech that is politely well mannered and fascinating from the time period everything is written with such deliberate measured language I wish we spoke with half as much erudite intonation today

Great movie I cried.
I've heard allot of scores to SON OF THE SHEIK William Perry piano score. Lee Erwin Theater Organ,. The 1937 Re-issue track with Orchestra, And Eric Beheim score from cue sheets. Excerpts of the Gaylord Carter score. Which has a couple great melodies. TCM debuted a new Restoration a couple of years ago. A lovely tinted print from David Shepard's film preservation associates. Not the same as the 2002 Image DVD with both THE SHEIK and SON OF THE SHEIK though that was from Shepard too. The new transfer of both films are much better quality. However, back to the music. This score is completely new to me, and I like it so far! Where did it come from?

Rudolph Valentino had a beautiful profile & smile.
Those gorgeous, smouldering, eyes.
I can look at this film a number of times.
And, I have done so.
It’s a charming film, nearly 100 years later, & with no vocal dialogue.
It’s all expression.
Not only is Rudolph Valentino so gorgeous.
So sexually alluring.
His facial expressions & body language are so expressive.
It’s brilliant watching him.
Quite hypnotic to see his many expressions he is able to convey.
He also looks so powerful & strong in this movie.
Hard to believe he would not live to see the effect the film had on audiences of that time when it was finally released to the public after his death.
Especially the effect it had on his female fans.
I personally think it’s his best work he had done up until then.
All the passion & sensuality are on high steroids with him.
Yet he must have had warning pains.
It would seem he just chose to ignore them.
Maybe he was trying to prove his masculinity after being attacked by several for being too effeminate by so many envious & jealous men.
All because he had such sex appeal & charisma.
He wore the latest fashion - a wrist watch, a man’s bracelet, dapper clothes.
He could dance beautifully & had the women swooning over him.
How his friends, & especially Polo Negri whom he was dating at the time, did not insist on him seeing a Doctor for a checkup is quite mystifying.
Polo Negri was aware he had bouts of pain well before he collapsed.
She mentioned this fact when they were invited to parties & social occasions.
Rudy had also mentioned it to several people that he thought he was having pain in the appendix area.
He doctored himself with huge amounts of bicarbonate of soda instead.
Had they made him go to the Doctor it might have saved his life.
Instead the appendix burst together with an ulcer & infection set in.
Sadly, Antibiotics were not available until 1928.
So the sepsis & peritonitis were what caused his actual demise.
That could bring anyone down, even today.
Such a sad ending, & loss, of a great silent movie actor endowed with so many talents.
So very sad. Because despite that fact he left an amazing body of work for fans to enjoy long after he was gone.
All of the actors are fantastic.
The delightful humour in various scenes. It adds a layer of delight & charm to this film.
The background is also so great with the camels, the goats being.
herded.
The special watering cans that are used in the Middle East.
The tables & furnishings.
The wonderful costumes that are worn. Attention paid in such detail.
The various well worn Trollops in a den of thieves.
The one enjoying a bowl of something & then licking her fingers enjoying her delicacy.
The heavy smoking wenches hardened from too many escapades.
The flirting done by one heavy-set lady with the diminutive actor adds a layer of laughter & interest.
The water pipe smoking all in the background.
I love looking for those details.
All these add so much charm to a film where actors only used their faces & bodies to tell a story.
Rudolph Valentino was a master of those expressions needed in a scene.
What tenderness, anger, doubt, sensitivity, sensuality, he was able to display throughout this film.
I can well believe how he got the women fans all hot & bothered with his passion & beautifully tender love scenes.
With the promise of what was yet to come.
Sex & desire begin in the mind.
And those scenes of Rudolph Valentino’s tap into that very timeless idea.
It no doubt set a women’s pulses racing.
Those scenes even get to you today, 100 years later.
Rudolph Valentino had it all in bucket fulls.
It’s rare to see an actor who can draw you in like he can.
The ideal fantasy man to most women, of that time, & also, today.
What woman would not love to have all those displays of love & desire shown to her with all that buildup.
It’s all beautifully re-enacted by Rudolph Valentino.
No wonder he said it’s the image on screen that women mostly fall in love with.
It’s not reality.
Nobody can keep that up for too long.
Especially when a relationship has weathered all kinds of outside issues coming in on them called real life.
But it’s nice to feel it, & see it on full display, for a while.
That’s why I can look at this film several times.
I find something new to admire, all over again, when looking at the background detail input of this film.
