    the thing I like about always open is the seriousness that they have when talking about subjects. not to say other shows don't but I think its interesting how they show their opinions and their feelings, it feels so genuine

    Huge advice for anyone having a panic attack where they feel like they are dying or having something medical: Eat a slice of bread or crackers with water.
    This helps because your brain is in a fight or flight response and your brain thinks you are in trouble. If you start to eat something two things happen, your brain starts to realize it isn't in danger because you wouldn't be feeding yourself if you were dying, and it also helps you breathe at a normal rate so you aren't hyperventilating.
    This has helped me from going to the hospital several times. It's scary even the 1000th time you have a panic attack, but if it's your first time just try know that it will eventually pass.

    funny that as a 26 year old male who has had severe issues with anorexia and suffers daily from body dysmorphia I found myself watching and listening to a lot more of these podcast/episodes. Lately, i've been slipping into full blown anorexia again. This morning this video was recommended for me. Thank you RT and AO for talking and putting this out there. I needed this. If anyone is out there who needs help, please do not hesitate to reach out, we need to continue in growing and supporting our community

    Barbara asked about dependency with medication and being fearful of people feeling like they need it. This has always been a pet peeve of mine. If someone feels like they need medication, then they might and should try it. Hearing Kati say "And some people do need it" was very validating. I started taking medication a few months ago and some people in my life were practically begging me not to because they personally don't like the idea of medication. It was so disheartening because to me, it felt like they didn't want me to get better. Since being on medication, I've been so much happier. So thank you Kati for talking about how medication is a valid treatment.

    • @extragarb
      @extragarb 6 років тому +1

      It's a really great feeling if you can make peace with taking medication. There is absolutely no need for anyone to feel like they have to deal with brain chemistry challenges/disadvantages ON TOP OF their actual problems. You were never responsible for the chemistry in the first place. It'd be like shaming someone for taking blood pressure medication

    I personally struggle a lot with my depression, anxiety, and panic attacks with a lot of issues in my life causing them to become more prevalent as of late for one reason or another. I have to say that this was a harder episode to watch because of that but I loved it so much because the information in it was so wonderful. Thank you for this episode and I hope it helps a lot of others with their problems and the problems of people they know so that things can be dealt with better by everyone. Everyone can deal with things in their own ways and everyone is different and I’m so glad this show exists. Been watching since day 1 and will continue to do so. Thank you all again!

      One thing that helps me is to eat crackers or bread. Since I feel like I'm dying, it tells my brain that we are okay because we wouldn't be eating food if we were in danger.

    Fantastic show. Great to see open conversation regarding mental health. I have Bipolar disorder, When discussing my own situation or advocating on behalf of others I always try to have a conversation where I substitute broken leg for the mental health issue. It helps remove the stigma when people stop associating a mental health issue with a lack of mental toughness. As an example, you wouldn't tell the guy with a broken leg to pull himself up by the bootstraps and git'er done. Too many people are afraid of seeming week or somehow less than others if they admit they have a mental illness. This is the stigma that must be erased, and shows like this one are a good start. Thanks.

  • @Merricat_likesu

    This episode was a huge help for me. I've recently left a five year relationship because of a partner who wouldn't get help, and because her illness was more severe than mine often marginalized my own struggles. I've began moving forward with treating my illness and taking care of myself. It's made my life easier, but it was a very hard relationship to leave.
    My medication has also helped, which is important. When my depression acts up I tend to act erratically, and having just made new friends for the first time in years I could feel myself annoying them or creeping them out, whether that was actually the case is irrelevant, I felt it was and I began feeling worse and acting stranger. I'm proud of myself for trying to find help.

    When Katie mentioned an example of seeing a person's brother and dad fight, it clicked. Its not fun like Jerry Springer, it's like living through your worst nightmare and there's nothing you can do about it.
    Its probably not healthy but I'm proud of my ability to repress memories and feelings with those memories but triggers are a thing...
    My dad had been doing better (well, I'd been around him less) but he had been lying about me (to look like some heroic father who swept in to save me), I called him out in public and in front of family.... He angrily ran up to me and put one hand on my neck and the other over my mouth as he said shut up, then let go as one sibling came over to defend me. Dad stopped and apologized but then he started trying to justify it. We all moved on since it was in public, dad apologized again later but also used manipulative language, so it didn't help at all.
    Everyone else has moved on but I can still see the look in his eyes as he came at me in anger.

  • @o0Avalon0o
    @o0Avalon0o 6 років тому +2

    Q 44:48 and A 44:54 ..."they should be able to communicate their issues to their partner, if not, that's not really a relationship" (paraphrasing); and the just wanting to be heard or giving time to listen or eat pizza with Netflix... This is just great advise.
    Had an ex that didn't believe in my mental illness; he clearly had OCD (and admitted to tendencies) and an eating disorder but he refused to get treatment and would say, "even if I did believe your illness exists, which it doesn't, I couldn't be with someone with a mental illness."

    This video honestly helped me a lot. I know that may sound like a cliche thing to say. I recently lost my father about a month ago. He was terminal and I took care of him every day. When he passed I felt, useless. Alone. Lost.
    I always contemplated about going back to therapy. After watching this I feel like it's a good move cause I'm not in a good place. Thanks RT.

  • @Stroopwafe1
    @Stroopwafe1 6 років тому +2

    Too much contact? Don't listen to her! If you're dealing with an issue, if you're depressed or suicidal, MAIL/CALL YOUR THERAPIST! They will help you get through that moment. Too much contact should NOT be a thing. You deserve the care you need at that moment.
    I just wanted to say that, as a depressed person myself, my therapist is adamant that I call him when I experience dark thoughts. And I have to promise that I'm going to be there next time.

    • @kirstenmiller7122
      @kirstenmiller7122 6 років тому

      There are different forms of therapy, like in DBT people can call their therapist all the time. For things like suicidal/dark thoughts, being able to contact your therapist would be really important. But for other things it's important to not become dependent on your therapist, as that's just another unhealthy coping strategy, which I think is what Kati meant. And if the suicidal thoughts etc. were severe, then like she said, more care is probably needed so the person can get to a place where they can go a week without needing their therapist. I hope that makes sense!

    I think for a panic attack bag things that I tend to keep on me just in case of one are; Headphones and something to play music on(phone/ipod), a fidget cube, hoodie or tshirt or something that smells like someone I care about(boyfriend/mum/sibling), pen and notepad(even if it's just doodling it becomes something to focus on and I tend not to go places without someone I know who I can then hold on to as a grounding point.

    everyone writes in questions but somehow forgot that they're not psychologists. These questions are already about subjects that are in some median of fiction but are now presented to people who aren't experts. If you think you have a problem and that it is legit, just talk to an expert or read source material. It might not be near as entertaining but at least it can help you.
