I saw her at the Royal Opera House in london as Azucena in Il Trovatore, well she was the most impressive singer on the stage that night she sent shivers down my spine! there aren't many nowadays
Oh my, that voice is just spectacular...and opera is all about the voice primarily. Brava. I think that's Juan Diego Florez, Arthur Woodley and Robert Orth behind her.
Actually, Stephanie Blythe is one of the active singers today, regularly starring at the Met, etc. It is true that her figure may limit her roles at some houses (she has sung Carmen, but not at the Met), but in the end the voice and acting take precedence even in this day. She is the best in this role I have heard sing the heyday of Marilyn Horne (who also had weight issues).
This is impressive. I 've seen Blythe as Cornelia in Giulio Cesare and Eduige in Rodelinda at the Metropolitan Opera and on both occasions I thought she was a singer of fine voice, excellent technique and good starge presence. One of the best on today's stage.
I am so disgusted that so many opera houses are bitching about weight these days - which means plenty of the finest singers don't necessarily get to do roles for which their voices are ideal. And then you get that gorgeous but often ghastly Netrebko doing all sorts of rep she has no business doing just because she is hot looking.
Back when these operas were written, heavier women were more desirable. Even today some men like fat women. Don't make the mistake of thinking your tastes and preferences are universal - they're just yours.
When casting opera, fuckability should not be a factor in choosing the singer. Or height for that matter. Their voice and suitability to the music should be more important factors in deciding than the qualities they can it control. Unless the role is very physical and they lack the mobility required to do it. Losing weight quickly as a a singer is dangerous to vocal longevity. Let’s be body-positive in how we cast operas and evaluate performers.

It really is. Danielle de Niese was lovely as well, of course, but there was nothing quite like her rendition of "Che faro senza Euridice"...took my breath away.
She is no more ridiculous looking in this role than Sutherland was as Olympia the doll in Hoffmann, or Caruso was as Rhadames. (She make some kind of mistake at 6:43?)
I will take an artist of size who has a gorgeous voice and is a good actor over a mediocre, pretty, skinny singer any day. When will casting directors figure out that opera audiences want to hear beatiful, expressive voices?
Talented but why so much modification of the vowel? I can't understand her Italian. It isn't clear muffled in my opinion. Doesn't take from her talent just could be great. Not in the rec but the aria.
What an amazing voice. I could listen to her all day and never grow tired of it.
Bella! Bellissima… più bella che mai 💖💖💖💐💐🎉
I have always been in awe of Ms. Blythe's voice. She is an American treasure!

Such a fantastic performance. Great vocal colour, superb artistry and utterly convincing acting. This is Isabella!! Bravo Ms Blythe and thank you.

Yes. It's a production from Opera Company of Philadelphia from November 2000 and was Juan Diego's U.S. professional operatic debut.
thanks for this!
she´s beautiful, georgeous and HOT! (sorry about the non-musical comment)

Are you serious? Can you imagine a Cenerentola or any heroine being desirable with 50 kg overweight ?

@Nicola Childs-Adams You are right. I wrote that comment like 3 years ago. My opinion about that has seriously changed.

AMEN!
Remember her as Mrs Wotan in the Met Valkyrie...?
@mjmacmtenor You are right: a great mezzo!! Not big, GREAT!!!!
The timbre of her voice is profoundly reminiscent of Marilyn Horne.
Хороша. Очень хороша.
gorgeous colour but I like a more agile voice for Rossini.

Ecoutez Marilyn Horne !

Mon Dieu ce qu"elle est loin de Rossini et de l'Italie !
Quel ennui !
