- This GHS tutorial is an outgrowth of Stretch Academy- a new masterclass at AdamBlockStudios.com . I give a brief tour of the tool as well as demonstrate stretching two different images. The Orion Nebula example in particular is one that NO ONE would dare attempt! But if you can get a reasonable stretch of this object... you can do so for any other- and I show you how!

This is by far the BEST tutorial I've watched about GHS so far. I am slowly (but surely) imaging again and this tutorial has helped me tremendously. Same as others have mentioned before, I still cannot understand how you don't have hundreds of thousands of suscribers. But...I also understand that people not always care about understanding all the "nuances" within the tools and the great possibilities that they offer. Now is time for me to spend some time at Adam Block studios and watch the Stretch Academy videos.

@@AdamBlock I definitely spread the word any chance I get! The quality of your content is so much higher than other channels that cover these topics. Others seem to say "do X, Y, Z" while skipping over the "why" which indicates to me they are just repeating information without truly understanding it. While there is nothing wrong with that it doesn't truely help people master imaging processing. Its like handing a bunch of tools to someone without helping them understand why the tools exist and what can be done with them beyond the obvious.
Time and again you demonstrate a deep understanding of these topics, providing that background and "why" portion of the equation which is fundamentally critical in understanding these tools and applying these techniques properly I think.
After two years of wanting to purchase your courses I finally pulled the trigger on it this week - and WOW - I've just been blown away by the depth of expertise and conscise ways you cover these topics. It has me truly regretting not having done it sooner. Just in a few days of course material I have gained so much more understanding and clarity around image processing and I have barely scratched the surface. BRAVO!
A quick example; I always thought of the STF tool as being fairly useless in the grand scheme, only running around 'nuking' images to get a quick idea of what is going on with them. After starting on your Stretch Academy material I was blown away by the depth you went into showing what is actually going on with STF and the various ways it can be used to great effect by itself and in conjuction with the other tools in PI (like dragging its stretch into the histogram for instance). It completely changed the way I look at STF and work with it now and made me realize just how little I understand these tools I thought I had a decent understanding of. It's been very empowering!

What an excelent video! Had a pause of roughly 1 year due to work and now coming back to astrophotography, so much in terms of software has happend, GenHypStr and the RC tools. Have to do a lot of homework now ;-) but with such a detailed and well explained video homework is as fun as never before 😀 best reagrds from germany!

For the love of Pete! The tools - the tools, the TOOLS! I don't need to image anything new anymore, since all my time will be spent re-doing supposedly-finished images! Just kidding, of course, but Holy Christmas! Long gone are the days of thinking what I got with four hours of Tech Pan 2415 was good. Superb tutorial, as always, Adam - many thanks. Absolutely fantastic tutorial. This has changed, in a very good way, how I process my images. Until I saw your video, I had no idea how powerful and effective GHS could be. Every other video did not go through the rationale behind the stretch. Thank you!

Really useful - thanks so much! I had to watch it twice and take notes the second time before it sunk in to my mushy brain, but I got there in the end. Seems important to stick as close as possible to this workflow to get the best results. I always felt stretching was a bit of a neglected subject and this is so useful.

This is a great run-through Adam. Thanks. I've been using GHS as my primary stretch method for some time now and appreciate your take on how to use it and the nuances that add to my understanding. These days I would normally stretch a starless image, then return the stars. It would be interesting to see what's happening to the stars and whether there's a benefit to stretching the stars independently (and how best to do it) before putting them back. Maybe you cover it in your Stretch Academy (that I've spent some time watching) but may have missed it. Several other UA-camrs show how they stretch the stars with GHS after using StarXTerminator but are fairly easy-going with how it's done. I haven't had an issue so far and maybe it's as easy as it seems to be but I wonder about best practice.

Adam - This was an amazing video that really explained everything that is happening, and a better way to use the tool, which I'm going to try right now. I will go to your website and poke around, but do you have any classes/videos focused on the non-linear processing of images? I've only been doing this for about 6 months, and I'm fine tuning my process flow, but struggling with potentially over-processing my images in the non-linear flow. Thanks in advance - Great Video!!!
Yes, I think everyone will agree..I have more than enough content on this and many many other subjects! Most of what you are interested in ...is the post processing stuff. This is demonstrated in my workflow examples.

Certainly a powerful tool, but in my experience a lot of work that in most of the cases can be achieve with standard stretch and some curves/masking if needed. I still have to find a solid reason to consistently use it with my images

It looks like you were able to get the core information, but also a good amount of the faint nebula.
Just curious length of exposure, and focal ratio. Or if it was a combination of two different exposure, lengths.

Ty Adam. This was so well explained. I now have a much better understanding of GHS. Question: For mono, are you using GHS on each mono (Ha, OIII, SII) image? Then combining them?
Not so much...that might be a little complicated. So far I have been blending the images into a single color (linear) image using NB ColorMapper and then going from there.

Hi Adam, When you click and hold in the image you get a preview readout with a cross. How do you do this? When I hold the cursor down all I get on the image is the small white cross inside a box. Thanks, great tutorial as usual from you.
This is an option for your readout preview. I cover this in my tutorials on my site. (are you a member?) The readout options are at the bottom of your screen in a little symbol that is a pull down menu.
Hi Adam…how did you zoom into the real-time preview …what key did you press to do so please?
There is a "square" icon/button at the bottom left. Click that and then draw on the real-time preview to zoom it. The original zoomed out layer still exists as well you can cycle through the views with the arrows.
Hi Adam, I noticed that during the M42 example,. after explaining how to use RGB mode in GHS to add color, you never changed the setting back to hyperbolic stretch when trying to do further adjustments (for example when you are in log view ) - was that intentional?

IN the last part of the video I show you can also use the MT function as well... since it also has the high and low limiters.

Just depends. Watch Stretch Academy. I explain there are different paths that can reach the same place in some instances...so the shorter path might be nice?
What version of GHS are you using? The one I just downloaded is different.
Remember..There is a process and a script. I am using the process (not the script). You get both... The process does not show a version number (I do not think.)

haha! The M51 data is extraordinary. The M42 data is actually solid...but typical for a widefield setup.
Sorry Adam, I will give you a (constructive) criticism: you explain tooo much technical detail at the beginning and that's make the understanding of the tool overwhelming. Is like your footprint, the way you do things in general. I just saw another 15 minutes video from View In Space channel about the GHS, and I had better understanding of it. My problem with your explanations is this: how I will related all that stuff with my practical real life stretching ? Is really that necessary ? As a mortal PixInsight user, do I need to learn this ? Don't get me wrong, your videos are great, but this is a general personal opinion, I think the people who do these educational videos about Pixinsight has to put in the users shoes.
Yes, you do need to learn this. That information you are concerned about is not just about the tool. It is more general. This kind of information is useful to solve problems on your own- to understand other tools without someone telling you. If you understand what I explained- you will have more power than other content creators give you. Two more points. 1. This kind of information is what sets me apart. Anyone can just fiddle with a process and show how...I explain WHY. You will not find as many content creators doing that and certainly not for free. 2. Regarding your comment about the brevity of other content creators... keep in mind they often watch my content before making their own (shorter) explanations. Nothing is done in a vacuum. (Do not challenge this, I can provide quotes and references.) I did not hem and haw in my explanations. They were exactly as I intended in this video. You can certainly do not need to know the "why" or deeper understanding of a process initially to use it- but I claim this information pays dividends in the future in ways you may not appreciate at the time. Finally, my explanation here is only part of a larger discourse that answers "How will I use this information practically... " This is why I made Stretch Academy.
