The solution to this problem is simple. The connection that you see is not the factory one, it is the "Parrot MKI 9000" system. I am sure of this because on your Nordic Oak waterfall (above the temperature knob) you have glued its attachment. To control the Parrot MKI 9000 system you must buy (or already have) its remote control. Once you buy the remote and put in its round 2035 battery (don't put in a 2025 battery even though it's a similar size it won't work) you need to pair the remote. Pairing the remote is done from what I remember by starting the ignition, waiting 10-15 seconds and then holding down the red and green handset buttons on the remote for about 5 seconds. You should then hear a "pairing successful" signal. Once the remote is paired, using the knob you change the audio inputs, you can then play audio from USB, AUX, etc. However, before you buy the remote control then make sure that the Parrot MKI 9000 is connected at all in your car, you can do this by checking working bluetooth devices when the car is running.

Hi! That cables are not factory installed, for sure.
If you are not the first owner of the car, probably the previews owner installed these. The reason is your car's radio seems to be able to read only CD's ( see CD button next to "EJECT" under the small display) just like mine. That cables are an "aftermarket AUX input"
I've seen this kind of install on other Volvos and I have an idea how should work.
Try to have a look in the back of the waterfall console, on the lower dashboard panels to locate a female jack plug. Usually the AUX signal is injected in the same audio channel of the CD. and this works only when the CD is playing.
Should work like this: turn on the radio, select CD mode with a cd inserted (music should play), plug the 2.5 mm jack (if you find the plug somewhere in the dash area. Music should mute), and plug one of the center bin cables in any device you want, play a song from there and you should hear in car's speakers.
Hope you solve it out! :)

Hi, sorry, haven't seen your comment for some reason till now. I will check your tip, it sounds like it's possible. And yes, I'm sure previous owner did this as someone was messing up with other wires in this car as well. Thanks a lot! I will let you know if you were right.

@@sandrak3337 in the newer 2010 model it has a aux in (female) in the center console next to the USB and using de mode switch to go to aux mode it's works well. What doesn't work well is the Bluetooth, it's only for calls

@@Bumperplates65 I'm not sure of the location of the microphone, but I think it is in the front dome light assembly. It definitely has a microphone near the driver but I never searched for it

these volvo's are software based system and if you need usb, you need to get the proper GROM system and have your local volvo dealer flash reset the audio to accept it. there is no other way
