The reality of van life is not what you see on Instagram. Yes, we've had some incredible highs while living in a van but we've also been met with some very uncomfortable lows. This week we share what happens in between... just a very normal few days of full-time van life.
Meanwhile, we are pursuing the new adventure we've been dreaming and saving for since we first met 8 years ago. We've always envisioned moving into the woods by the lake and building our dream tiny cabin as a home base for us to come back to in between our international travels. We cannot wait to have a place to call our own!! We are SO close to moving into a cabin in the woods but still have a few hoops to jump through to make this dream a reality!

Good morning everyone!! For nearly a full year now we have not missed a single Sunday of uploading to this channel at exactly 9AM EST and while that's a great time for us over here in Eastern Canada we started to wonder if uploading a little later in the day would be better for our West Coast friends. I like learning facts when I travel! Keep ‘me coming! I particularly liked the Kingston tidbits because I’ve been there before but never got to the islands!
Bec, keep a notepad, pen and flashlight next to your pillow, and when you wake up at 3:00am, write everything down your thinking about! Then tell yourself repeatedly "I don't have to think about it, it's written down," and you'll fall back to sleep.

I just started grad school in New York, JUST south of the Canadian border. It’s absolutely killing me that Canada is so close, but we’re not allowed to cross the border yet!

So refreshing to see you two in less structured scenarios - when you’re in a project you’ve got a script, but when you’re like the rest of us, being couch potatoes or chilling out it’s authentic and relatable. Not every week must be a big adventure... chilling is a consequence of fall (pun intended) and you two have innate entertainment value without trying! Glad to see it come to the forefront ❤️. I’m on the West coast and as long as you post on Sundays, the time of day makes no difference.

I am allergic to apples!! It started when I was around 19. For awhile, I thought it was just when I bit into them so I started slicing them. But then I’d still have reactions from sliced apples. I tried organic, even home grown apples from a farm, still had the reaction. Boo. I miss apples.

My favorite tip for cleaning stainless steel pots and pans is to sprinkle the dry pan with baking soda, add some dishwashing detergent to make a paste, and scrub with a damp cloth until everything is unstuck. Then add more water and wash as usual.
The journey you two have been on is amazing. Definite proof that if you can imagine it, you can make it happen.

My husband and I adore ya'll. He is getting ready to retire and I am about to complete my clinical & mental health counseling license. Watching your videos has made us decide that we would love to customize a sprinter van so we can travel to people in need, such as after a hurricane hits, or a mass shooting or tornados, etc. It would definitely give us the flexibility to get up and go and do our community service without worrying about hotels or housing. Thank you for inspiring us.

I lived in Kingston for 4 years/went to Queen's - it's a beautiful and really charming city!! Definitely recommend spending some time in the downtown area :) lots of character and great food lol

I was always having trouble with cleaning pots after cooking. The trick is to use baking soda and lemon juice and like magic everything slides right off after like 30 secs to a minute! For longer shelf life, I use the lemon juice in a bottle. Try it!!!

Eamon & Bec I went from California to Portland, OR to be an ally and join the BLM peaceful protests, and to our other Portland, in Maine, to try to eat the state’s entire lobster harvest, and tomorrow will re-enter California,, three months later, after having visited 37/50 US states. I was at the border of Canada three times on the trip, but our President’s failure to address the virus prevented me from adventuring into your country. As soon as able, my passport and my dog Barney’s shot record are ready to be shown to allow us to visit. I have a bug screen install that I want, and the vender is in Canada.
Hey Bec :) there are amazing medical strips to stick right behind your ear for the first 3 days of your sailing trip. This is the average period of time see sickness usually lasts. Hope that's helpfull

Fun fact - if you’re wintering near Kingston and it gets cold enough and freezes you can walk to Wolfe island :) also the Kingston’s farmers market is legit - lots of local fare (and not just food terminal resellers like some markets).

Hi Eamon and Bec! We life in Florida and are always excited for sunday 9:30 am to come, because this is our sunday tradition to have breakfast in the living room and watch you guys in the morning with our 2 children and 3 dogs!!! We love you guys and I am impressed how good Eamon is doing the editing of the 20 minutes of the screening or movie. Sorry I am German and sometimes it's hard to find the right English words. Anyways, also big compliment to Bec you are so natural and very fun to watch. It never gets old to watch your videos, can't wait for next sunday! Greetings from Florida. My 2 daughters have just bought homes. I told them the hardest part is the waiting. Waiting for the acceptance of the bid, the inspection, any fixing of problems the inspection found, the bank loan, and waiting on getting started too make the home your home... exciting times.

The freedom of travel without planning ahead is so wonderful. Now with the cabin and land... Bank loan, insurance, etc. don’t let all that shit get you down. This pandemic has made everyone change the way they live (hopefully) and not in a good way.
Random stainless steel pan tips.
Pick ups”barkeepers friend” sprinkle it with a little water and let it soak a few minutes and even the worst sticky mess will come off. Steel wool scrubs help too. 😀

My mom is from Carthage, NY! My very first trip to Canada was to Kingston in 2002 when I drove over to there from NY. It was my first time back in NY since I was a little girl. It's such a gorgeous area! I'd live in Canada in a heartbeat! I went to Montreal several years later and fell in love with that city, too. Banff is also on my travel list (eventually... Maybe one day?!?)

Due to the pandemic, my husband and I were not able to go home during the winter break and the summer. I have been so home sick. I watch your videos every week and have been so excited to see you exploring Canada. I can't believe you are so close to where my parents are. Seeing you drive by Dollarama was everything! There have been so many transitions in my life this year and I am struggling. You guys help me re-focus every Monday (china time) and remember why I am here and what I want for my future. My husband and I have been talking about Van life and it being a way for us to explore Canada next year as we decide where to settle down. I just can't believe that you are in my hometown! Wow. Just came across you guys. You two are just amazing the perfect couple with the perfect lifestyle. Watched all of the 144 van build videos and although daunting, I will start mine next month on my own. At 60 years young I decided to leave my stressful marketing job in London behind, study interior design and move into a van to travel. I got so much inspiration from you and I am deeply grateful. As my build will have its challenges no doubt, I will remember to " Inhale & Exhale " 😂. Love you guys and thank you so much🥰

To stop food from sticking in stainless or cast iron, make sure the pan and oil are fully preheated before adding anything. Then STOP STIRRING the food. Especially with tofu because it has so much moisture-- you have to leave it and let it release on its own. if you try to stir it before it releases, you end up with a big mess. This means high heat is not the best choice-- try medium heat and plenty of patience.
I've also found that when using this type of pan it is easier to cut larger slices of tofu than to cut it into cubes. Flip it once, cut it up afterward. If you're still getting the hang of when to flip (meaning if you're learning to be patient while the food releases lol, still working on that myself), this can help reduce the risk of annihilating your tofu if you misjudge or get impatient :)
For the US people thinking about visiting the 1000 islands, I took my first car camping trip at Wellesley Island State Park in NY. It was beautiful and I could walk 100 feet from my car to wave at Canada!

The tingling is called “oral allergy”. My sister and I have it. I’ve read it never gets worse and it’s not serious. Knowing that makes me more blasé and not worry. And I really, really hope I win that van!!!

WELCOME TO KINGSTON!! It really is a beautiful city! Downtown is very pretty, Lemoines Point is a pretty place to walk, and so is Parrot’s Bay! Lots of tourist attractions around downtown, and there’s even a trolley you can ride to learn more about the history of the city!
My sister and her family lived in Kingston for about 6 years for a while. I visited them. Kingston is beautiful city. Home of The Tragically Hip!

I have the exact same apple problem Eamon has! When I bite into an apple my face blows up and I get hives around my mouth, but when they’re sliced I’m ok. I was speaking to an allergist about it and he suspected that the concentration of enzymes that are found in tree pollen might be closer to the core of the apple making for a worse reaction. People typically have this problem if they have really bad seasonal allergies and are allergic to specific trees and grasses.
I am with you Eamon. I have a problem with peaches. I never thought it was a reaction but I cannot bite into them because of the peach fuzz on the skin. It gives me shivers to even think about it. I have to peel the skin off and then slice them up. Not high maintenance at all. Just a preference.😉
Oh and Bec... I was once seasick on a ship and was told that keeping a full stomach of solid food, no liquid is helpful. Your stomach acid sloshes on an empty stomach and if you drink anything, same problemo! Solids keep still. Just what i was told, after the fact of course. But i made sure the rest of the trip to keep solids in my stomach and it was fine. Of course you can drink a little but on a short trip like that i would avoid it.

Kingston, Wolfe Island, the Thousand Islands - this one brought back so many memories of our university days at Queen's! I'm sure you guys will enjoy your new backyard. It's so beautiful in autumn. Also had a good giggle at the DIY haircut - reminded me of my husband suggesting we just use the dog clippers on his quarantine haircut!

Eamon you commented about going away from teflon pans and how you were having a tough go of it. Get rid of the stainless pan and go to raw cast iron. It has to be seasoned but once you’ve done that you never wash it with soap again. You would just use hot water and a curly kate stainless steal scrubber and it will mostly just wipe out. We use it for most everything. We’ve got four different sizes.
