the only reason why people say they aren't pop punk or pop rock is because they associated with one direction. and also because whenever fans of punk hear "pop punk" and "punk rock", they automatically think of green day and blink-182. blink would be classified more as pop punk and green day would be classified as punk rock to pop punk but everyone thinks those are the only good bands in the world so they hate on 5sos, and people hate on 5sos for being influenced by green day, blink and all time low and it's hella annoying.
