Durston X-Mid Pro 2 Review on a 9 day expedition

  • We recently ventured to the Spero River Wilderness on the West Coast of Tasmania. Since we had to carry our pack raft and associated gear which adds another 6kg, weight of the other items , such as the tent, was crucial. As it turned out I started with 26kgs, which wasn't too bad.
    This is the first long trip for the Durston X-Mid Pro 2 that I have owned since late last year.
    In short the low weight of the tent outweighs ( no pun intended) the condensation that accumulates in one skinned tent in Tasmanian conditions..

    Nice trip and glad you're liking the tent. Thanks for putting this together.

    Countering condensation: 1) Try to locate under foliage. Blocking as much overhead sky as possible. 2) Increase distance from water if possible. 3) Open doors (as long as breeze doesn't bring-in more moisture than it's removing, such as at the beach). 4) If foliage overhead isn't possible, carry a metalyzed Tyvek (sometimes called "14S" or 1443R-S) ground-sheet and tie-it overhead. This only works well when there's no breeze. Overhead, blocks the sky shine that often causes condensation.

      Amazing the efforts you have to go to to use these trekking pole tents. The tent dictates where you must camp to avoid the problems mentioned. Frankly I use a double walled free standing tent that gets setup where I want to set it up. We are all about the 5 star campsites near water with a view and because we like the shoulder seasons when it can get colder it’s important to close the vestibule doors for warmth without having condensation get all my gear wet! Especially my sleep system! The footprint of this tent is enormous and won’t work for the sites we like! Great if you have ample flat space to get a good pitch and follow the guidelines you laid out! Gear is very personal. There is more to consider than just weight. Enjoy!

      @@SummitSeeker546 - Double-wall takes a good stab at condensation by catching droplets onto the inner (e.g. mesh) and while a wet inner is better than a wet sleeping-bag, it isn't nirvana either. Using nearly two-pounds extra of poles and an inner to solve a 50g tyvek issue sounds like crazy-talk? Especially since Tyvek serves triple duty as a tent ground-sheet and lunch/break-mat. As to the footprint issue, guess you haven't ever seen the "skinny-pitch?"

      @@tomnoyb8301I’ve got a Zpacks Plex solo tent and yes I love the weight savings but I find I choose my Marmot Tungsten UL 1P more often out of preference. Again the type of backpacking we do and the level of comfort I seek it just works better for me! I’m not an ultralight thru hiker. I’m more a traditional backpacker that likes off trailing it a bit and the campsite choice is critical to our experience. I constantly look at ways to reduce weight but weight is not the total driver to my decisions. Your tips will no doubt help someone out there. We watch these videos and read the comments to learn and share experiences. Happy trails!

      Another tip to reducing condensation is to make sure the inside bottom edge of the vestibule walls are clear of gear. You won't eliminate condensation but it should allow better airflow.

    It will be interesting to know how well this tent performs in Australian heat, protection from sun and if there is any UPF rating? did you have issues finding camping spots due to footprint?

      I get just as much condensation in my Mont Moondance 1 (mesh) at times, even with the vestibule open and vent open (2 nights ago at Pencil Pine Tarn). As you know, we can't avoid condensation here and all the talk of vents/site selection are less applicable to us. We get it when conditions dictate. Simple physics. I also got similar condensation on my old X Mid Solid 1p. Sooo, after weighing things up, I have an X Mid Pro2+ on order, looking forward to dropping 800grams from my Mont Moondance 1. Cheers :}

    Did you sleep same direction or opposite for the head room? Durston insists that it's fine sleeping same direction, but I wouldn't like being the one under the low side.

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear 6 місяців тому +4

      The headroom is different on each side, where the higher side is very generous and the lower side is about the same as other tents like the Duplex. I think it is fine in the same direction because tons of people use tents like the Duplex which is similar, but certainly the other side is higher and you could sleep opposite to both have that extra room. If you're regularly sleeping two people then you'd probably prefer the new 2+ version which is wider, taller, and has less rotation on the ridgeline so both sides are more even.

      @@durstongear I own a XM Pro 2, but I purchased it to use as a 1 person tent. I use a 25" sleeping pad and I like to have the interior space. But that is why I was asking how you two arranged yourselves. Cool that it worked for you.

      True. Its weight vs condensation. For longer trips you save 1.5kgs.
