Thank you for doing this video, your videos really helped us in choosing where to go this year, Mayrhofen! One contender which has barely any reviews online is that of the Sauze D'oulx region.
Went here in 1981. Sunniest ski holiday I ever had, with great skiing each day. Returned 2 years later. Must go again - great high street and Pub back then.
It's the only ski Holiday I have ever had and it was 34 years ago on my 40th birthday that I was there. I remember it was in March I was there and I had a fantastic time. I thought it was a magic place
Had our fifth trip to Mayrhofen in January 2020. Mayrhofen offers relatively good value for money and great skiing with most pistes above 1500m. Recommend staying near to train station so you can also ski the other Ziller Valley resorts including Zell am Ziller, Kaltenbach and Hintertux.
7 times there since 2008. There is no US resort area that comes close. Easy to get to, skiing is cheap for Americans, food and drink are very cheap, for Americans. Lodging is about average. In the many apartments around town, about 100 Euro per person per night seemed pretty common. Excellent bus service.
I stayed in Mayrhofen in 2013. I had purchased a train pass to get there but ran into a friendly woman who offered to drive me. I had no idea there were such friendly open people. I believe I stayed at Pension Martha. Friendly people there too!
when we were at Mayrhofen we did drunk toboggan riding at night, it was a realy fun experiance! and also we were rocking it pretty hard in scottie after leaving the ice bar at night, so not so calm!
Stayed in the Straus Hotel next to the Penkenbahn lift - never had to queue too long for the gondola. Was up on the slopes in 10 mins every day. Rented a locker at the top of the Penken lift which was great. Lots of runs and different options to suit all levels. Very nice town and lots of hotels to suit all budgets. Separation of town to ski area was not an issue for me as lift is so good. Well worth a visit.
I was about to, got as far as the lift up. But then I saw a skier coming down on his face, with all he stuff going everywhere... So I thought naaaaaaaaaaah. 😳🙈.
@@l.s.3066 Norman is right, its 78% of 45 degrees. 78 degree would be like falling down a cliff. It's on the page linked, "around 38 degrees". www.thebmc.co.uk/europes-5-hardest-ski-black-runs
Thank you for the tip! The review was focused on Mayrhofen so we didn't get into the other apres ski bars in the Zillertal, but we will definitely check it out next time we will be in the area.
Surprised you recommend Hintertux when weather is bad !! Conditons on top of Hintertux in bad weather can be ferocious and sometimes the upper lift to top is closed. The winds can very strong and I have been there with temperatures as low as -20 !! I spent most of one day in the Sommerberg restaurant want for weather to break and lift to run, but it didnt. Worth mentioning also that the main first descent from the top of Hintertux is a a steep red which can be very icy when the wind blows the snow cover off the glacier below. It can of course be gloriously sunny up there and I have skied there as early as first week of October so for anyone looking for a few days skiing in autumn, or early summer then it is worth a visit. In Winter, skiers can ski from Maryhofen across and down into Lanersbach and then catch the Mayrhoffen Bus up to Hintertux. This reduces the bus time to Hintertux by more than half and with good snow you can ski right down to Lanersbach village or to Tux.
hi amblincork, The times we recommend to go to Hintertux is when there are sometimes low clouds, fogy, or rains, and in Hintertux you can ski above the clouds. other times are in the end of season in warm days. I agree that because of the high altitude etc' the weather there can be harsh many times.
@@SkiResortsVideo But when there are low clouds in Mayrhofen, when you get to the top of the Ahorn or Penken, you will also be above the clouds. You are offering not the best of information sometimes. I was a ski instructor in Mayrhofen from 1969 to the very late 70s and lived there for many years, so know like a local.
I’m booked for Mayrhofen 30th January 2021, it’s now New Year’s Eve......I don’t think I’ll get to visit the way the world is at the moment. We get told on the 20th of January if we still have our holiday, I’m really doubting it now

hi Jonny, there is a point in your comment, and maybe in the end of February it's better in Mayrhofen, but in most of the rest of the season it is better in Val Thorens. in respective we wouldn't give a 10 to Val Thorens, but the fact that all january and march it is good there in that respect, and most of December and April is significant/ the video of mayrhofen was filmed in the end of February while the one of val thorens in mid April. the score is based on years of observation of the 2 resorts along whole seasons. if you will come to Val thorens in January you won't believe how good is the apres ski there

Well, with that said, you really don't have to worry about the snow in a good winter at Mayrhofen anyway. Plus, when there is poor snow in the village of other resort that allow you ski all the way to them, they would have no snow either, therefore, are no different to Mayrhofen. Just take the cable car down at the end of the day's skiing and enjoy the great runs and snow on top of the mountain. You are being far too critical about almost nothing.
They are great resorts but FAR MORE EXPENSIVE than anything in the Zillertal plus take far longer to get to. They are great resorts but overrated. I know them well, I was a ski instructor in Mayrhofen for many years and have skied just about all the resorts in Austria, so I speak from experience, not from what is printed in guidebooks or resort pamphlets. For probably 90% of the people, the skiing offered in Mayrhofen and the Zillertal will more than satisfy ever need. So, save a ton of money and transfer time from an airport and don't go to St. Anton or Lech or Zurs.
