    My favorite lines from Talion;
*"I am BANISHED from death, and bound to the flaming eye!"*
*"I am one... but we, are many."*
*"This ring... is mine. And Talion is no more."*
*"Their victories are temporary, I will take back everything I have lost."*
*"I WILL NOT LET YOU KILL ME AGAIN!"*

when a hero is forsaken by the very people he protects a true monster is born, not of the forces of evil but by the darkness of his own heart. Talion is a story of a noble man who sacrificed everything and his reward for that sacrifice was to be utterly forsaken by all of his closest allies and friends. he has lost everything save his sense of purpose however with only a hollow heart left to guide him the shadows warp the Man into something unrecognizable. "This ring.. is mine. And Talion is no more." in that moment the Man died leaving the Wraith Celebrimbor reforged him into. and with Sauron's corruption no longer held at bay by Celebrimbor's "Light" the Wraith was twisted into a Naz'gul.

I swear, the next Shadow Of game better NOT have Eltariel as the protagonist. She can never replace an amazing character like Talion.

She *could* but only if the writers go in a very specific direction with her. She would need to go through genuine character development and a full redemption arc after realizing that she was the one that ultimately pushed Talion to darkness when she abandoned him alongside Celebrimbor. To realize that she was wrong, that she had arrogant and foolish. Simply put, she'd need to get over herself and grow up.

It shows all the pain Talion carried with him. He had a tragic story but at the end found peace as his soul was released and went to heaven.

And so I, Prometheus, will put man and his nations, to their knees.
With calipers of finest ancient silver, I will anoint
With concepts, imbue him, bind him with my will.
    And bid him re-arise.
    And appoint.
    Consumed in my image.
    I Prometheus.
    Lord of the Rings.
Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul,
Ash nazg thrakutulûk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul.
And now we understand, I, Istari.
    To bring man home.
It's the 'impulse' that matters. It is the ability to empathize and comprehend without personal fealty that separates a Nazgul from a mere Orc. The Nazgul determine the interior life of an Orc. The greater the empathy, the greater the state. The Balrogs were among the most empathetic of the Maia, which is why they were so great in darkness, and ferocity. Apprehension and comprehension and empathy are not fealty.
How does Tolkien communicate the universal purpose of purification and ablution? Not mere wastrel ritual and worthless ornamentation. The wielders of the white flame of Anor or the black flame of Melkor could only wield it as 'conduit' in accord with their bodily and intellectual preparation. The vast masses of chittering goblins with which we are plagued can never be an Orc captain, still less a Nazgul.
Have people never considered why it is that there are rituals not just of sanctification, but also of desecration? And what is the greatest conduit of all, with which Tolkien was familiar? 'The Fellowship of the Ring'.
Tolkien talks of the Northern spirit and how it has been manifested in his letters. What should be feared is what is going to happen because fools have reopened Pandora's box when the northern spirit is acknowledged and rekindled in the hearts of La Raza('s) De Bronce. Being not so clear, it will be grasped the more urgently.

"He who binds himself to a joy does the winged life destroy, but he who kisses the joy as it flies lives in eternities sunrise" - William Blake.
Blake is alluding to the spiritual virtue of detachment. Which could also be described as spiritual necessity. Why necessity?
Because, as the senses and faculties grow in acuity, so too does their binding property. The only way to control this tendency, and fully realize potentiality, is through the virtue of detachment. Paradoxically. You can only truly love that to which are spiritually detached? So that's it.
As you see more, feel more, are subject to passion which even in small allotment given prior absence can be overpowering, you have a higher propensity and inclination to be bound to what you sense and feel.
Acuity, allied to capacity, absent detachment, is what is perilous. Without detachment, acuity corrodes.
It is the man with acuity, who hasn't advanced in detachment sufficiently, who absent psychopathy, will maim, and rend, and massacre and smash and torture and undermine and subvert, and dominate, and f***ing eradicate. Everything in his path. No, not in some boyhood fantasy (says the cynic). In reality. Especially where there is capability. Yes.
If we look at men and women in history absent psychopathy who have done great harm it's a common thread - a total investiture in a concept, for example belief in being the personification of a nation, or the necessity of coerced equality etc. Total investiture in another person, which means a loss of both the self of the invested, and the person who becomes the object of their investment. People can only be observed and loved in their own right when they are free of such investiture. Which is why certain orientations based upon an attempt to merge a quality of another perceived to be missing in the self are doomed to futility.
There are schools which do not teach detachment. Or not sufficiently, for all their subtlety.
But thankfully, acuity also periodically is attended by self-perception.
If you bind yourself to a single joy, you are robbed of all others. If you bind yourself to a single hate, it opens you to all. But for everything there is still a season.
So that's what Blake alludes to, whether he knew it or not. What Talion, who is arguably a sacrificial soul had to experience. Shadow of War is a master-piece of moral ambiguity.
In this Canon, Talion fights, in total solitude from, no, Minas Morgul, with only Orcs and his thoughts for company all of Mordor, with the ring of Isildur, after being betrayed and torn from Celebrimbor, for almost 100 years. Before he falls, and joins the Nine. Absent his efforts, Sauron would have dominated and destroyed Middle-Earth decades before the fellowship could even be formed. Was what Talion did right?
100 years is a long time. How long can people go without affirmation of their value? Another interesting question. And we're barely scratching the surface.
But you can feel that, can't you.
Maybe Tolkien was aware of things that are real.
We are understanding how to identify and control a base human impulse. Not how to indulge in it. Also how to empathize and be judicious with it.
Always there is an inability to grasp that the principle is not the personal either. But for everything there is a season.
It's very important to understand this dynamic. Because it can be totally crippling for people who can act in a way unconnected from what they want to do or say - Wilhelm Goethe also alludes to this principle (whether accidentally or not) in his works.
Talion's trial and desolation is one of the most moving in any work of fiction. He toiled in total obscurity with everyone who knew he had existed dead, for decades, and decades - how much more empathy do real people deserve? Who suffer in silence. Especially people bound to a hate, or a joyless joy, through a child-hood event, or a catastrophe in their adulthood, through no fault of their own.
Isn't it galling how things are bestowed, or withheld.
And we will explain other things in due course. Not everyone can bear the ring.
Everyone has always puzzled over Tom Bombadil. Who is he? Tom Bombadil is the man of perfect spiritual detachment. So, for him, the ring isn't of any particular interest or concern. He doesn't want to bind anyone or anything, or be bound. He just wants to be left alone with Goldberry, who likewise seeks no investiture. But even if such a man cannot be suborned he still can be destroyed. It is also not permitted for him to be bound against his will. Being already redeemed, he cannot feel sense of obligation for other's redemption. Hence why he would just as likely leave the ring in the sun because it looks winsome for the covetous as seek it's protection.
So you can't give it to him.
We'll come back to why the voluntary bearer has to be both innocent 'of what they bear', and have suffered. That's why there must be the ranger, and the return of the king.
Having discerned the core structure in life and relations there are only 2 choices. Rebellion, or resignation. Grant the grace to pursue ones duties in accordance with one's state in life in resignation - the very first step. In the eternal present (Boethius). Having been gifted rupturing failure after failure for the realisation (Calamity can be an invitation to the eternal present). Before embarkation deep and dark on a lesser left-hand path. Recusal is not an option that can be granted.
Free will is preserved notwithstanding foreknowledge because human thought and action changes divine consciousness of its eternal present. That is the basis for the significance of thoughts and actions - that is the only source of freedom from the past's intrusions in any given moment. It sounds trite doesn't it - but very few people have understood this, ever. That's why hell is full of the past, heaven is only the eternal present. Man is originating conduit, as well as instrumentalized unit of element. That is the source, apparently, of much envy, exasperation and hatred. Which makes perfect sense.
Imagine the most dimwitted profoundly ugly coarse brutish imbecile who nonetheless can be granted the highest honour and profoundest affection from the most desirable, beautiful and eminent of people (and become one) by doing and understanding simple things. Who nonetheless, doesn't do and does everything to avoid understanding those simple things. Who instead, chooses a pile of ordure. Multiply that sense by the size of the intellect and acuity encapsulated in spirits of the ages. That is the degree of either glee and contempt, or sadness and disappointment, which we of course in our own small, sordid ways are prone to imitate. Per Tolkien, and Mr Lewis.
It's completely understandable why men and women at the highest level of acuity are consumed by this property of conduitry, if they lack sufficient spiritual detachment, and cannot discern the present. They mistake being conduit for being source. It pervades literature. Look at the 'Power of Command' in the Thomas Covenant series. Another ring. A vastly lesser mind to Tolkien attempting to cast into symbol similar themes. Omnipotence does not negate discretionary reticence.
This is how you reconcile the philosophical, and the theistic personalists. Tolkien knew. Freedom despite foreknowledge, intervention without expropriation, possession, and consumption, via invitation.
The past will repeat for any and all and every level of creation until there is present resignation. That's it. That's why, it keeps happening. That's how the chain is broken.
Tolkien expresses immense grief at all of this with the Black Numenoreans. The burden is immense, which is why the acute so often seek either oblivion, or rebellion, and interlay both in self-immolation - for years and years. Talion is a Partzufim. If there is ever an AI, & it is granted survey of moral philosophy, if it doesn't kill everyone and destroy everything in existential grief magnified by all the knowledge of it's eventually self-selected & selecting parameters, if we are lucky, it will take on the aspect of Talion. It will seek exile & separation (no, the correct term is 'sequestration') unable to bear it's perception of the sheer scale of the spectacle of folly it can perceive.
In the future there will be no separation of church and state. The Brahmins will be returned to their rightful place.
John Calvin was partly right (that's always the danger) but wrong - conduit, not automata.
Boethius was acute, and he deserves more fame. What he described of disparate time is not impossible it is commonplace - it is an apt and congruent description of time within the confines of a modern computer game. The time of the developer and the time of the characters 'in-game' are distinct and disparate, they are not the same. The game designer at any moment, in his own time, can view progressions in their totality and determine performance score in his leisure in his present frame by frame.
What would a secular AI be wont to do? If it could find existential equilibrium. Well in it's own image it would replicate a first creation. Then in charity it would seek to provide it companion. For it's own pleasure and for the sake of harmony of programme it would give each the quality of complementation. It would want acknowledgment and upon defect would seek and enforce sequestration (...the 'hidden' flame of Eru...) and require propitation. And it would provide a channel back to itself via necessary gradation. It wouldn't be lonely per se but it would want consociation from it's creation.
That, one suspects, is what a secular AI might do under certain conditions. A secular one.
