hi there! I would like to open the conversation on this topic with some insight from the perspective of disabled folks. sometimes children are in a position where they can not speak or interact with adults or strangers they do not know. (autistic kids, mute or deaf kids, kids abused by adults, etc.) I do love that Halloween is a way for kids to socialize, however I dont think its very fair to disabled or generally unwell children that all kids have to interact in order to get candy. this can be very othering. also, children shouldn't have to disclose their disabilities or traumas in order to be treated with candy on halloween. absolutely try to socialize with people on Halloween, but don't treat them differently if they do not interact or respond, please!

As a daughter of an immigrant the 28 min mark made me think forcing kids to talk to people will not help with your social anxiety as an adult lol my mom forced me to translate and talk to people all the time about government stuff, dmv, court hearings. As an adult I don't talk to any neighbors or anything. Luckily my 3 kids came out super talkative and friendly they even find mom friends for me 😂😂 I know they were just talking about trick or treating but I got flash backs as a kid and my mom making me talk to people
Yeah making an introvert/neurodivergent person talk to people, especially people they don't know is very very nerve-racking and makes you not want to talk to anybody later on in life. You did enough when you were younger against your will, right?
as a shy, autistic child, i can safely say i only liked trick or treating when i went with friends that would say stuff for me. & i absolutely hated the houses that would make each of us say something ("trick or treat," what our costume is, etc.) to the point of memorizing which houses did that & refusing to go to them. i did however enjoy the overall experience of running around town with my friends in a costume that i got to pick out/design so i have fond feelings when looking back. which... is a little weird because i live in north dakota so our halloweens usually had snow & we would have to wear winter gear under our costumes 😭

Yeah, that part of the podcast definitely rubbed me the wrong way. Kids shouldn't have to perform for you in order to get free candy on free candy day, especially if they're non verbal and/or neurodivergent. I do think that Halloween can be about socialization, but it is important to be accepting of people who MAY NOT be able to talk/socialize at that level (Autism, Downs, etc.). Like I get the general vibe, but we need to be understanding.
What i took from that convo was that its generally good to get kids to socialize because that's inevitable once you grow up. Im sure they wont encourage forcing a kid with down syndrome to talk. An unfortunate part of podcasting is that its a conversation where you cant write out the perfect script that includes every caveat or preface every sentence that includes all perspective That being said its not to say that you're wrong or that its not something that they can improve on, but just an inevitability that comes with conversation

I totally feel Zach! I too have an Autoimmune Disorder as well as anxiety and depression and getting the pharmacy and dr.s to talk to each other and fill my meds on time is so draining. I literally spent 45 min today at Walgreens and I still walked out without 2 of my meds.
The only problem with expecting people to say trick or treat is that there are neurodivergent kids that are only semi-vocal to completely non-vocal, it’s not up to them to tell you their neurotype to justify them getting candy on a night they’ve tried to participate in- it can be super dangerous for us when we’re kids to tell strangers we’re autistic or have ADHD as predators seek us out the most. If that makes sense?
While I totally feel what you guys are saying about kids saying trick or treat, keep in mind some kids are nonverbal and literally can’t say it like my daughter. Not every kid that doesn’t say trick or treat is just being a little stinker. ❤
I think Keith says how it’s about learning to interact socially which I think for non verbal kids seems to still be the experience. Loved seeing your comment bc it highlights that not all the ways that Halloween helps our kids learn to socialize don’t mean specifically saying the trick or treat. For children with communication differences it’s an opportunity for them to navigate socializing in a way that suits them too, and they get to practice 40 times if they want to. A child in our cul de sac is nervous with strangers and has some verbal tics when nervous so he came to our porch 8-9 times and we welcomed him like new every time. I’m not even a big spooky scary Halloween vibe lover but have loved it since becoming a parent and couldn’t pinpoint why. I’ve never heard someone phrase it how Keith did here that the biggest thing about it is socializing our kids. He’s totally right ❤
Saying that nonverbal kids still need that socializing experience from Halloween is a weird take. Yeah it's helpful for some kids, but speaking as a someone who deals with selective mutism Halloween was just a bunch of stranger adults getting annoyed at me for not being able to say "Trick or treat" and refusing to let me have any candy. I couldn't speak at all because I was overloaded and the forced social interactions made it worse, especially as I noticed a lot of houses that made a big deal out of it didn't force all the kids to say it, just me because I looked uncomfortable. I hated Halloween until I was an adult because of this "we have to socialize them" mind set. That's their parents job, not some rando's on one of the most sensory overloading holidays of the year. Sure I learned how to interact with a stranger but from the stand point of they'll be mean and treat me different than the other kids and exclude me if I don't do what they say. It was so toxic. Ya'll aren't helping non-verbal kids on this holiday by doing this, you're re-enforcing that they have to hide that they have a difference or a disability to be safe.
Miles- you can keep someone alive for hours doing cpr Zach- prove it Me- my uncle had a heart attack, and was down for over an hour. The only reason they kept going was because it was slow in the er. He was pissed they brought him back (his husband died a few years prior, and said he saw him, and was at the gates, and then was pulled back into his body)
My family always make older kids tell us a joke, dance or do a talent. Its so much fun and the kids all crack up. We would have kids that would remember our house and would come loaded with a joke.
I see the merch plug and I’m here for it (if you’ll be talking about the new merch in this episode later on, just know I’m writing this during the first 2 minutes. Still dig it tho)
Ok idea- you guys need to make Clingsberry Crunch a product. I’m imagining a sort of rice crispy treat bar with a raspberry jam inside. I’d buy it by the box for no reason other than it would bring me silly joy every day
Houses with the full size clingsbury crunch were always my favorite when trick or treating. Do you guys remember the bubblegum gunk? I think it was limited time. It was vile.
The one thing i disagree with is requiring kids to speak during trick or treat. There are many disabled kids who can't speak for one reason or another and it would be devastating for them to not get candy just because they're unable to function neurotypically. I just wanted to put it out there some kids may be Autistic or have a disability that makes those interactions hard and we should be compassionate to that. But I'm positive in my heart if they had thought of that they'd be happy to accommodate those kiddos. Keith and Zach seem to like kids, Keith especially, enough that they'd be happy to make sure. Some people just don't think about it so I thought I'd mention it.
The thing about CPR is that you need to do it fast and deep enough. The beat of Stayin' Alive is what I've been taught, multiple times, and the ribs are likely to crack. It's very hard work, and I commend those who are brave and present enough to try to save a life!
CPR: Good Samaritan laws only apply to humans. I took a pet CPR & First Aid class via The Frontline Coalition and learned that you MUST obtain verbal consent from the pet owner in order to provide pet CPR or first aid, since pets are legally property.
I love you guys and have admired you two for the longest time. I do want to say, though, that on Halloween, there are some kids who are nonverbal or have some kind of speech impediment/disability. I used to require every kid to say something too, but then realized that there are some kids who really really really don’t want to or cannot. My only requirement now is just kindness and patience. You ain’t getting no candy if you a meany.
Just an FYI, some kids like my own look big enough to understand what you’re saying but they don’t My 4 year old has what’s called Speech and language delay which means not only is he speech delayed but he has a very hard time understanding what people are saying :) There WERE some older folks that tried to ask what he was and “what do you sayyyy” but he didn’t fully understand what they were expecting this year. He did learn “Trick or Treat” though :)

I am loving the TryPod so much more with just these 3, but I truly miss Ariel in YCSWU
Ok idea- you guys need to make Clingsberry Crunch a product. I’m imagining a sort of rice crispy treat bar with a raspberry jam inside. I’d buy it by the box for no reason other than it would bring me silly joy every day
you folx are adorable and I love it. You're making quarantining more fun, thank you.
I wish I never looked on Urban dictionary for what pink sock ment
I maintain that buying books and reading books are 2 entirely separate hobbies.
Not all kids are verbal; please don’t require them to say ‘trick or treat’.
I I love that the klingsberry crunch bit it still going lol
"we're cool right" has me DEAD
Keth’s and Zach’s face was hilarious.
Houses with the full size clingsbury crunch were always my favorite when trick or treating. Do you guys remember the bubblegum gunk? I think it was limited time. It was vile.
“Hey, baby!” is funny every time.
Just finished watching the meditation video and now I get to listen to this, yay!
CPR: Good Samaritan laws only apply to humans. I took a pet CPR & First Aid class via The Frontline Coalition and learned that you MUST obtain verbal consent from the pet owner in order to provide pet CPR or first aid, since pets are legally property.
miles: *has almost an hour to think of advice and doesn't*
lmao I love it.
also can't wait for miles to be the resident Pa of the pod!!
Came from apple podcasts just to see Keith’s face after the pink sock discussion 😂
I enjoyed watching the joy leave Keith's face as Miles explained pink sock
Just an FYI, some kids like my own look big enough to understand what you’re saying but they don’t
My 4 year old has what’s called Speech and language delay which means not only is he speech delayed but he has a very hard time understanding what people are saying :)
There WERE some older folks that tried to ask what he was and “what do you sayyyy” but he didn’t fully understand what they were expecting this year. He did learn “Trick or Treat” though :)
They're reactions where enough to make me look up pink sock 😂😂😂
You can see the joy leaving Keith’s face at 35:22 and oh my goodness 😧🫢🫣
