Working non profit events has been the biggest factor in building my business. And it’s so true, I didn’t start to get something. I actually photographed my first non profit event as a way to give. And it ended up giving me so much more.
Great content cheers. Ive been shooting for 45 years the last 21 on newspapers. Stupidly the newsgroup made us photographers redundant last week favoring instead journalists using their phones to shoot pictures. This now leaves me actually starting over again in 2024. I already have a steady income from my UA-cam channel but 20 nzd per week is not quite enough to feed me so ill go back to shooting weddings events sports news portraits anything and everything. Shooting photography comes easy to me actually doing the business side is a whole other thing
When building a photography business, it is important to know what you want. Most photographers start a business because they want more freedom in their lives and to be their own boss. A client-based business where you trade hours for money has a cap. At some point, there is no way to grow further simply because there are no more hours in the day. Photographers tend to forget they have a skill (other than just taking photos) that many people are asking for. Education, entertainment, and edutainment are a few examples. Many of these business models are easy to scale.
Thank you so much for this! I had a headshot photography business but shut it down during the pandemic. I am just now opening it back up again and am trying to catch up. I have also moved to a new state and I love your suggestion about reaching out to local non profits.
Thank you so much for the information. I am an inspiring photographer and need to know the basics. I am thinking about attending classes to improve my work for a portfolio. I would love to share some of my photography with you, to get advice from a professional standpoint! If that's ok. If not I completely understand!

I had a abstract painting and photography business named "Creatively Bold Art & Photography... I never reached where I wanted to be partly because of my location and otherwise , because I did not have ideas you and others have ... Have you ever considered like a 30 min or 1 hour zoom meeting as a consultant to further explain , lay out and answer questions re: your wisdom from experience and expertise

When it comes to working with nonprofit and writing off your service as an “in-kind donation,” how do you price that when you file it in taxes?
I get a donation receipt from the nonprofit and I price as I would a regular client. No sense in donating a discounted rate for free.
