  • The Redcat Gen9 is finally here. I've been looking forward to this one. The Gen8 V2 has been an absolute workhorse, though not without some minor issues that needed addressing out of the box.

    Is its successor worthy of your hard-earned? Will it be as tough as the Gen8 V2 that came before it? Are the rubbish tires and weak servo still an issue?
    Let's test!

    Oh boy oh boy oh boy! I am so glad to see this finally hit the airwaves. Super excited to see/hear all your insights on this new car. My wife got me one of these for Father's Day, and I've been anxiously awaiting for you to get to talking about it. They got a remarkable number of details spot on with the original 1970 Scout 800A while at the same time getting a couple details surprisingly WRONG at the same time (I'm spoiled, I can take it out and compare directly with my real '70 800A, insert bragging rights here). I will eventually be making some slight modifications to the stock interior to make it more accurately match the real thing, but it's a great base from which to start, the best one that's been done so far by anyone.
    One of the things I really like about this one is that they included the V badge below the nameplate on each front fender. That's the factory V8 badge, which not a lot of 800As came with (mine is a factory V8 so I have it), and being that authentically close to the real thing tickled me pink, they really didn't have to do that. It also has a well done version of the lowback bucket seats, which was the most common option (mine has the highback buckets which I intend to make 3D models of for our Gen9), and in the sticker pack they give you two fuel cap stickers, so you can replicate the dual fuel tank option of the original (mine has that, too). There's so much to like about this new body. And that new body mounting system is very clever. The only real drawback to it is that it doesn't allow you the option to install a real tailgate if you want to, and I really wanted to. It may make it difficult to mount a scale OEM-style tire carrier, too. We'll see about that when I get to the stage where I'm ready to design one.
    I've already designed and printed up multi-point articulated side mirrors because (shocker, I know) I broke the driver side one on the first drive. The ones I made use the stock mounting holes and are very similar in appearance to the OEM mirrors, I think they turned out pretty well. And, being articulated, they just sort of swivel instead of breaking off (very similarly to how the Gen8 mirrors do) when I invariably do something stupid. Again. Happy to share if anyone wants the files.
    I also got the Redcat Gen9 light kit for it. And that was... well, if I had to guess, I'd say that whoever designed that body never talked to and maybe never even met whoever designed that light kit, because the amount of disassembly required to get to where I could put the dash lights in is just ridiculous. As a minor bonus, it made putting in the floor mat on the driver side and both interior door panels super easy while it was all taken to bits. Anyone looking for tips on how to open that body up, let me know. It was quite the adventure in forensic surgery. But it turned out nicely and the light kit adds a very pleasing nighttime driving experience.
    And as for the tires... I think the new M16 tires are a huge improvement over the Gen8 tires, I do not dislike these new ones nearly as much as the previous ones... but... I didn't even have it three days before the RC4WD Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs arrived and I put those on it. I really like those tires. I am not an Interco/SuperSwamper fan. In real life or in RC. So, I can't really speak to whether they're any good or not, I didn't drive on them enough to really tell. They look and feel pretty good, though. I'm betting they perform pretty well on the six problems.
    All in all, this is a really good little model. I'm very impressed with both the detail and the driving experience, and I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who found it so. I've read your article on the RCTNT website, which I thought was very well done, just like this video (no surprised there, eh? you do great work!), it was right on target as usual. Can't wait to see the next part of the review. Thanks for all of this, we really appreciate what you do here.

      Aw thanks Mac! Keep those tires it came with, I'll spoil the next video just a bit to say they're very good. Much better than what came on the Gen 8 V2. I'd be surprised if they weren't better than the Duratracs too, though I'd need to test them side by side.... Which I guess will happen soon enough anyway when I do the big test series!
      Thanks for all the info and offering to share your mirror design

      @@RCTNT we eagerly await the next installment on the Gen9. I really want to see how it performs on the six problems. Those new tires look and feel a LOT better than the Gen8 tires did, so I have relatively high expectations of them. Your teaser hint only increases those expectations. I fully intend to keep the stock Gen9 tires, I may put them on the RGT, even.
      You know what else I'd like to see? the Gen9 compared to the other two-speed trucks (and maybe some of the single speeds like the Enduro boys) in your collection, all with their own stock tires and wheels, running a full ten gate challenge course. It would be interesting to see how this one stacks up.
      The big tire test is also being eagerly anticipated. With so many tires on the market, and so many different OEM offerings on the various new rigs being sold, we're super spoiled for choice. It's good to know which ones are good at what tasks, and which ones aren't. Can't wait!

    I had completely forgotten about the Gen 9! It´s like after release nobody is making any comparison or mentioning it again... The body is as square a shape as they come, but I'm such a sucker for that tone of blue.
    About the preload, if you´re getting the body sitting on the left rear corner when you throttle it, I think you said you wanted to loosen the rear right preload, but I would´ve stiffened pre-load on the RL corner instead, so it has more support when weight is shifted to that corner when accelerating.
    Then again, for a rock crawler you really don´t usually need to perform high throttle demands in which an uneven pre-load is necessarily going to help, or do you think otherwise?

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  11 місяців тому +1

    Surprised they didn't fix the torque twist issue, one of the big advantages of portals is no torque twist but they didn't put enough gear reduction in their portals, looking forward to seeing how it does on the rocks, I would think with the heavier body it would be more top heavy than the gen8?

      You'd think so, yes. Still, even after all the rigs I've run over the 6-Problem course, I still don't always pick how well (or poorly) they'll actually do. It's quite interesting and the Gen 9 test won't disappoint!

    @drehahaha 9 місяців тому +1

    Thank you for the video! How is the Gen 9 compared to the Marksman?

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  9 місяців тому

      The Gen 9 is a more complete car than the Marksman, IMO. It has 2-speed, better steering servo and a better radio. However, the Marksman has a better paint job (subjective) and will crawl over larger and more challenging obstacles (mostly objective - the larger 2.2s vs 1.9s will win most times).
      The portals on the Gen 9 are tough and help eliminate most (but not all) of the torque twist it would otherwise have. The torque twist on the Marksman is very significant.
      If the Gen 9 is as tough as the Gen8 v2, it's axles are stronger than those in the Marksman, which I damaged on my second drive.
      The plastic trim on the Marksman appears to be more durable than whatever compound they used in the Gen 9. I've broken a side mirror already and the axle housings don't seem to flex as much as the Gen 8 V2 ones - I'm not sure if that'll mean they're more brittle, but I suspect they might be. So, durability may be a draw.
      Bottom line, it's a subjective choice overall, so it might depend on who else you crawl with and what you think of the two rigs.

    What size batteries do you recommend running on the Gen9? Thanks.

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  7 місяців тому +1

      Nimh: 3000mAh+ 8-cell
      2s/3s lipo: 2200mah to 5000mah 25c+
      Go smaller for performance (ie. Less weight), larger for trail time.
      Longest runtime will be a 2S 5000mah brick (you'll even fit up to about 6800mah I'd guess).
      Best crawling performance will be with a little 700mah 3s 50c lipo.
      It's not hugely important for a car like this, honestly. Run whatever you've got 😊

    What 2S battery would you recommend to be able to power the steering servo?

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  8 місяців тому +1

      Any 2s brick to power this rig should be fine. I like these: ua-cam.com/video/Hg35NsO8BQY/v-deo.html
      I wouldn't suggest a separate battery just for the servo, though. If you're running on 3s power and you want to give the servo its own feed, consider a ubec instead, like this: amzn.to/3QgHwKK
      Does that answer the question? If I've misunderstood, let me know and I'll happily try to tell you what you're after. Cheers

    • @RCTNT
      @RCTNT  3 місяці тому +1

      Make the most of it. They're very different cars. The Gen8 v2 is very tough, I'd say one of the more durable crawlers on the market. Whack a Fusion 1800 in it to give it the high and low speed it needs without having a 2-speed transmission, swap the tires for something better, later on change the servo to something better and maybe smack some brass on the corners. Job done, you now have a killer 👍
      There's always something newer. The trick is to find joy in the present and let the future worry about itself. You bought a great car with plenty of room for mods. Have fun!
