In this video RubberRoss fails miserably to draw characters from memory. His brain is an Aphantasia void full of endless darkness. If he hasn't drawn a character from memory before, you can probably safely bet he will be unable to draw them. This isn't the first time we've done this in Gartic Phone either, you'd think he would've gotten even marginally better at this, but he hasn't. Watching him try to draw a Pokemon is still the most painful thing.

Yeah, same. The problem for me, I think, is that the details are disconnected from one another. If I focus on one set of details, the others won't stay. I have to re-imagine, so to speak, for each part so I end up with detailed small parts but a disjointed and wonky whole.

I struggle to draw when I have no clear picture of what q character looks like so I've taken to editing images together. I think I also have some level of Aphantasia. I can’t see anything in my mind, but I can “feel” the 3D space of an object or the outlines of 2D images. I can’t imagine colors in my mind either, but I can kind of place where they appear in the space I “feel”.

Aphantasia has a spectrum that ranges from only visualizing vague details like the general shape to absolute blank void. Some people who can visualize details can't imagine colors into those images and there was a time where people predominantly recorded imagining things in black and white. videos and photographs weren't in color at the time then that changed with the advent if color television which implies some level of aphantasia is acquired through conditioning. Also aphantasia explains so much of the medieval art of animals since some of them monks and artists couldn't just get a lion to hang out for them.

Being an artist with aphantasia must be _interesting._ I guess one upside might be, if you can't form an image in your mind, you won't have to deal with the frustration of not being able to realize it the way you hoped. 😅

Based on how he talks about it in other videos I believe 100% he has it. However the fact that he has it is I think why he tends to describe it in such literal terms. It would be difficult (not impossible) to explain something you've never experienced in any way. Even people who can visualise or have inner monologues have trouble explaining it.
