In this video RubberRoss fails miserably to draw characters from memory. His brain is an Aphantasia void full of endless darkness. If he hasn't drawn a character from memory before, you can probably safely bet he will be unable to draw them. This isn't the first time we've done this in Gartic Phone either, you'd think he would've gotten even marginally better at this, but he hasn't. Watching him try to draw a Pokemon is still the most painful thing. - Ігри
I have the opposite problem, I can create very detailed images of how I want the character to look in my head but I can't translate that into my art lol.
Yeah, same. The problem for me, I think, is that the details are disconnected from one another. If I focus on one set of details, the others won't stay. I have to re-imagine, so to speak, for each part so I end up with detailed small parts but a disjointed and wonky whole.
I'm pretty sure that like 90% of artists have that problem
Same, but even worse is that I can draw. But for some reason, I developed a drawing style different from my inner visions. I have pop artist brain, I have painter hands.
Same
I have this too but with music. I am not talented enough to play what I hear in my head.
I like that Ross can still draw Seth McFarlane faces almost perfectly, implying that it's part of his muscle memory.
Have we ever seen them in the same place?
I mean he did draw like half of all his friends in the style
I can draw sonic completely using muscle memory
@@itzkhalizisreal do it with eyes closed
To not be able to have a visual image in your head of a character and still pull off a drawing that is immediately recognizable as that character is super friggin cool, mad props to you!
It confuses me, and I can only think to call him a liar.
@@Zackaria_sMax it's that he can't visualize what they look like, but he can remember key info in their appearance, like either that they have spiky hair or big eyes. Think of it as putting a characters discription into words, on a paper, and giving it to a group. They will all have different drawings with similar features. Kinda same concept
@@Zackaria_sMax it's called remembering. Like you can remember, Kirby is a ball and pink. Versus other people can visual how they view Kirby and see Kirby when they imagine it.
Just because you don't understand doesn't mean someone is lying
It seems like aphantasia doesn't noticeably affect your ability to draw characters from memory. Everyone struggles with details.
@@FailedNoName ok
I love that you specified that you dream. That's how you know you actually have aphantasia, because you already know "can you dream" is the first thing EVERYONE asks
Still always cool to see someone else with it!
It's Big League MDB!
It's like being partially colorblind. "Yeah I can't see certain shades of green, mostly stuff with brown in it"
"Oh like this?" (Shows me the most green green to ever green)
"....no, like...army green..."
honestly, i had no idea people could actually imagine images in their heads until recently. very weird
oh and also, i didn't know people actually heard their own voice in their head while thinking
Oh thank god I’m not the only one 😭 being an artist with this is a struggle
@@IveGotBeef that was the same for me lol
Don makes Ross laugh so consistently. I need more collabs from them.
Does Don have a yt? I tried looking but I didn't find anything... I'm not very familiar with Ross' animator freinds but I really like Don's art style.
Boy are you about to eat well.
@@RubberRoss oh boy
@@RubberRoss Oh, hell yes.
@@RubberRoss oh man
I got way too excited when you said "I can dream though"! When I try to explain to people what aphantasia is and why I cannot draw from memory or have to have visual cues and props while playing DnD, they always think I'm bullshitting when they ask if I can dream and I reply with yes. 🤦🏼♀️
I think a part of it is that our dreams are subconscious and involuntary, so people like us, with aphantasia, still "see" dreams.
my mother really said that
I think this might be the reason why Kirby is so recognisable even if the games aren't as popular as some other Nintendo franchises
he is simple and yet so memorable.
His simple design is what makes him so memorable. He's literally a sphere with a face and nubby hands and shoes! Yet, despite him having a simple design, he's unforgettable... Especially when everyone saw him partially inhale a car... Nothing will erase that image from my memory...
@@breadedbutterman5328 why did you make me remember that
It's a huge inspiration to be able to see a talented artist with aphantasia. I struggle to draw when I have no clear picture of what q character looks like so I've taken to editing images together. This works but it gives my drawings an indie game quality vibe which I'm fine with but I've always aspired to be able to draw a full body without freaking out about what a person looks like.
I think I'm kinda blessed because I learned about my situation only recently and I'm quite profound in art by now (13 but I'm well above average when it comes to traditional art for most) so I don't need to adapt as I've never really been imagining people besides thinking about their characteristics like what skin color or smth.
I mean I don't have aphantasia and I still freak out over what people look like.
Haven't heard about this aphantasia thing before so I can't speak to it, but I've always considered myself very hard of imagining. But my experience is that you can still learn proportions and what a human looks like the traditional way, by just drawing them a bunch. But imagining up new characters is out of the question for me, I just can't come up with anything I haven't already drawn from looking at it at some point.
Right!! I'm not sure if I have aphantasia but it kind of feels like I should look into it! I have to do the same when drawing it makes me feel horrible but I just can't really picture what I want out of thin air it feels impossible even with references sometimes. It can be super frustrating and a little depressing sometimes patchworking references until I get something I like so I've succumbed to just never posting my art on the web which is good for me in a lot more ways than one. It's cool to hear someone else has to do the same thanks for commenting this! ❤️🤍
*I know the basics of art I've been doing it for awhile I just can't come up with anything new.
I was an artist when I was younger and am now a architect so aphantasia was a large hurdle to overcome. But still I did it.
i have hyperphantasia, and i saw this as a gift at first but later i started to unconsensually imagining horrific pictures, like watching a horror movie will cause me to think about well death so i start imagining my family dead in detail, night time can easily lead to panic attack if i don't have the telly on. also uncanny valley things also cause weird shit to happen as well.
Damn. Intrusive thoughts like that being amplified does *_not_* sound fun.
SAME!!
I had someone try to explain to me, a person with Aphantasia, that Aphantasia isn't real, and that I could visualize images, and that I was just too *stupid* to understand what they meant by visualize.
They sound like a jerk.
You're not dumb if you can't see pictures in your head. Maybe your brain is so large that it sees the pictures as meaningless, therefore you have a bigger brain. Either way, mental images are entirely necessary when you have alternatives of remembering stuff. I believe all brain have methods of growing large. No exceptions for tiny peanut brains like me! I'm not the only one here, right?
@@breadedbutterman5328 Big brain
@@voidarch4414 Big peanut! It's breaking through my skull! It hurts! Too much knowledge hurts! Whoo!
I never knew there were people who can't imagine dramatic fight scenes to the songs they listen to.
I have aphantasia too, we do have other means to imagine, but they could be impaired as well. I for one can recall a song in my head if I was listening a lot. I could imagine a fight scene's sounds faintly if I really tried and imagine my body moving. I don't see it I just kind of feel it, how my muscles would react. I guess it's like you're blindfolded. You can still remember where things are relative to you but can't see them
@@didnt_ask_for_handle Holy shit that's actually really cool thanks a lot for this my guy :D
Yeah, when I listen to calming piano music, all I can think of is bar fights.
@@didnt_ask_for_handle yeah i would say this is accurate lol, I would assume we don't get as like intense or dramatic of a feeling as others do but I can always somehow sort of think of some sort of amv in my head when listening to songs that animators usually use in their backound or like a cool cimena frame when listening to louder hiphop music
Aphantasia was something that shook my grandmas world, I was speaking with her about my own discovery of having it, only for her face to drop, "I think I have it too." she is 72 and it kinda messed her up knowing that she had been imagining things differently than most for her entire life without ever noticing it.
That's pretty late in life to realize something like that, but better late than never! It is pretty crazy, though, how someone can go through life like everyone else, and not realize they have something that makes them different from everyone else. And, if she's been around for this long, she can't let it have a bad affect on her.
@@breadedbutterman5328 thankfully it actually helped resolve some things for her, like the fact that she never understood the whole, I can't even remember their face thing. and why she kept so many photos of all of the family, with my sister apparently having it as well, talking about it has been a bonding experience in an odd fashion.
@@Doctorfullerton Really glad to hear you guys are creating a tighter bond, because of this! Keep these people as close as possible, before the inevitable end of the universe being swallowed by darkness, or whatever happens then.
Heres an interesting idea:
What if you did a gartic video where everyone is assigned a videogame/anime/cartoon/etc. and then you all pick a character, and everyone has to translate those characters into the style of your chosen series.
this this this
I legitimately only learned about this because you mentioned you have it before in a gartic video, Ross. It was really eye opening to me and explained a lot about why I always struggled with visualizing stuff.
Is there any way to be 100% sure that you have aphantaisa, I think I might have it
Watching this at 2.30 am after I'm done with college work, and the one part that absolutely BROKE me for SOME reason was smashtoons' beautifully drawn, absolutely perfect Green M & M. I was cry laughing silently for like 5 minutes.
I got aphantasia too.
But I've learnt that I have way above average recollection and imagination for audio and music.
Try for yourself, I'd bet if you're aphantastic the points not allocated to visual acuity have been used in something else.
Stay awesome
Ross has said on stream that he is very good at remembering things related to audio, which is why he is very good at doing voice impressions.
Wait a fricking minut...
I have awesome musical memory. While I can't remember the text I can remember almost Every single melody I have ever listened to more than once
Oh my god same!! I have no ability to actually see things in my mind's eye, but I can play entire songs to myself in my head when I'm falling asleep
@@mellow_mallow Same for me as well, I never even knew I had aphantasia until seeing what Ross described. My ability to remember music I haven't listened to in years, and the ability to still think about imagery in my head, and know what happened, or what would happen is what basically takes place of visualizing the imagery by closing my eyes.
@@ArceusBowser212 exactly! I don't see things, but I can imagine them in descriptive language, so to speak.
Even with not being able to visualize, Your Palkia is still more accurate than over half the others.
I don't remember him drawing this. But, I believe everything you say. Ross is an artist, and no one can doubt this.
I don't care enough to go back and find this.
This is a Josh art appreciation post. The comments are always full of love for Juny and Don (deservedly), but Josh's art in this game of Gartic Phone was very well laid out and had lots of care. It's been awesome to watch the various regulars on Ross's Gartic sreams improve, and Josh has been dialing it up to 11 more and more!
This is because Juny and Don are given more mention throughout these. I usually don't remember the other artists' names, unless they appear more frequently, but they're all pretty cool! They all do good art!
15:50 As a finnish person, this hurt my soul (The Moomins is from Finland, the author Tove Jansson wrote The Moomins in swedish first so people often confuse them for being swedish when in reality they are finnish) But it always blows me away that people outside of Finland, who are non-fin, know what The Moomins are and it makes me happy that people know about them :3
16:10 Whoever told him that, thank you and OMG HE SAID IT! SUOMI MAINITTU, TORILLA TAVATAAN, PERKELE! 🇫🇮🇫🇮
I remember loving Moomin as a kid, I’ve recently found some old drawings I made of Moomin, lol
MORO :DD
Ross: "I drew Shinji from Evangelion."
Me doing the Gendo pose: "Yes... Good..."
22:22 I love how Ross drew the Australian plug for Chibi-Robo, you can't escape your past!
I like how he can't even draw his favourite characters from memory
I also have this! And still dream and whatnot. What's really odd is that when I been reading the novel for a manga I can feel? See??? The panels. It does make drawing ocs hard tho so I always need at least some sort of reference. And it's always a little hard to not do my default pose and hair for every illustration.
I love how Ross' drawings evolve into Family Guy sometimes.
While back I found out about aphantasia after googling it after being really discouraged that I'd never be a good Artist of I can't visualise, only to find out about all the artists that have it aswell! And you! It's really gosh dang encouraging to know that other great creators have the same thing as me but still manage to create
you can really tell just who is part of this community when the most replayed part of the video is the green M&M
I've got the exact opposite problem, haha. I've got hyperphantasia, meaning I can mentally see everything, heck, I can even mentally feel the paper on my hand, smell the pencil/pen/whatever, but I just cannot translate that into art.
I know every stroke I need to make, but just can't actually formulate it. it sucks because I get easily frustrated when it happens and just give up, even though I don't want to.
5:40 I love the synchronized "EEEVIL"
I love these so much. Especially sense every person just look like stick figures and I can no long tell the difference between them… These episodes bring me so much joy.
Look into the drawings a little more. There more than stick figures, George. GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE STICKS! And, if you're seeing human beings as stick figures, you may want to look into that too. Getting that fixed wouldn''t make a difference in how you'd perceive me, though... I am, indeed, a man of sticks.
I think I also have some level of Aphantasia. I can’t see anything in my mind, but I can “feel” the 3D space of an object or the outlines of 2D images. I can’t imagine colors in my mind either, but I can kind of place where they appear in the space I “feel”.
But yeah I can also dream. Sometimes of the future for some reason, vividly.
Aphantasia has a spectrum that ranges from only visualizing vague details like the general shape to absolute blank void. Some people who can visualize details can't imagine colors into those images and there was a time where people predominantly recorded imagining things in black and white. videos and photographs weren't in color at the time then that changed with the advent if color television which implies some level of aphantasia is acquired through conditioning. Also aphantasia explains so much of the medieval art of animals since some of them monks and artists couldn't just get a lion to hang out for them.
This is exactly my experience!! It's so strange because outside of this, I have complete aphantasia. Can't imagine using any of my senses, like sound. I have no idea how I have that "feeling" of 3D objects without having any other sense be imaginable.
Don is a truly amazing artist, especially when it comes to making others laugh. We should be like Don.
It appears Don's Tryometer dial was broken and stuck on "No Fucks Given" for this session, and I kinda love it.
[EDIT] Also, quick thought. Similar to doing a "Make your own Kirby power" round, how about a round making your own Megaman Robot Masters? That could be fun? Everyone making their own "__ Man/Woman".
Even when Don isn't trying, he still manages to create masterpieces!
I loved the one about the comedians and puns. Even if it wasn't on purpose, its brilliant and it flew over everyone's head even after they explained it.
I clicked on this hoping it meant exactly what I thought it did. And it did not disappoint! I have aphantasia too! I usually write because it's an easier medium despite still having to look up reference pictures to add more intense descriptions. I've always wanted to learn how to draw, but never thought it was really possible. Wow! I'm so blown away that you have it too. Maybe I should pick up a pencil after all. I can't help but feel inspired. Thank you!
Wow I haven't watched your gartic stuff in a while now but I like the little shake up of format/style of video. Makes it a little more engaging than before, good job.
Random Q:
Does anyone else have this thing where when reading something, it's always read in the voice of whomever I talking/the author etc? If i don't know their voice, they usually get a preset one, based off of what I'd imagine they sound like.
**Same applies to myself btw, like right now, writing this, as a prime example. I hear my voice as I type basically.
Sometimes. Er, most of the time. It alters. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. But I do know what you're talking about.
When I read, it’s always in *a* voice, but not someone’s voice? Not sure how to put it, but I kinda hear it but at the same time don’t
I think that’s normal
@@ravenID429 I don't know, most people I talk to don't seem to have that. So it seems person by person based, rather than being "the normal"
@@Genasidal Oh weird
Been a while since we got a vid so I’m extremely excited to watch this, especially such a fun challenge!
Being an artist with aphantasia must be _interesting._ I guess one upside might be, if you can't form an image in your mind, you won't have to deal with the frustration of not being able to realize it the way you hoped. 😅
(tbh, this happens with every piece of art I attempt, but I might just be bad)
Sounds like you have something similar to hyperphantasia. I have it too. Add perfectionism to the mix and it's all kinds of sucks
Bud, compare your art to mine, and you'd be relieved of your frustration. I promise you.
@@windraizou That's too many kinds of suckage, right there... Being a perfectionist is what stops you from doing too many things, which is why my art don't look too good.
Just subscribed! Just wanted to say that you were soooo funny at scribble showdown in Dublin and your one of my favourite content creators now :D (my mum loved u at scribble showdown)
dude aphantasia is so wild, props to you for being such a stellar artist despite everything it brings with it! that shit's so difficult for me, it's like needing to depend on your ability to recognize it after the fact, with only a ball park guess going into it.
Are you telling me, that someone CAN memorize someone FACE?!
that is a phenomenon to me, the more you know about yourself
Kinda... the other end of the spectrum I'd think would be photographic memory. The average person apparently can picture an apple in the mind if someone tells you to, but can have varying stages of detail.
That's like impressive memory. For me it's like faded and sometimes it's harder to see depending on how sleepy I am.
For me it's like if someone handed you a blurry image in a dim room 🤣🤣🤣
If that makes any sense
Wait, so normal people can just close their eyes and imagine a movie-like scenario in their head?
Well, new member to the aphantasia club I guess
Love the new format for the videos! But would love if you could zoom in for the reveals would love to see more detail!
YESSS! a new video from you is always good, Ross! We love you!
I love the ones from Memory, and the one where you choose a promt and everyone has to draw their version of that :D, animations are sick but as a video it takes a very long time for a payoff.
Aphantasia is funny like that
Finally another artist with aphantasia. So many friends and people I know don't belief me when I tell them I draw and I have aphantasia xD
I have so vivid dreams and always wish i could see like this in my head when I am awake. You are such an inspiration Ross!
Don and Josh had the funniest drawings; I'm dying
Ross be like I can't draw from memory then draws a perfect mr tayto at scribble showdown
I had reference on my phone next to the tablet.
@@RubberRossstill impresive
God, does anyone remember the lemon imagery imagination trick?? I tortured myself with that shit for so long as a kid. The most I could ever do was try to make my body feel the sensation of moving up and about the rooms, and I thought everyone was just exaggerating about picturing stuff. (This also applies to every time my English teachers brought up the subject of imagery in class)
Thank you for informing us. I had no idea that the inability to visualize is a potential condition, not a personal flaw.
so validating and reassuring to see other artists with aphantasia! I tried drawing pokemon from memory once....they weren't even identifiable as those pokemon.
I really love these Gartic videos, they're pretty entertainment!
lol i cant even draw normally
0:23 Same. When I was in elementary they would often tell us to close our eyes and imagine something. I would always pretend that I could when in reality I saw nothing but darkness.
I didn't even know I had aphantasia or what it was until you talked about it on Game Grumps and I thought that was how everyone had it lol
the palkia..😂😂
I can visualize a character, but when I put pencil to paper, it looks nothing like the real deal, nor how I imagined.
It’s so fun seeing other artists struggle with aphantasia- it took me years and years to learn people can actually see things in their mind
I always look for the videos with MelloDillo cause I love his art style ❤
It seems that I see people with aphantasia more often than I thought I would. Maybe it's not as rare as I thought...
Wait so people can actually imagine pictures in their head while closing their eyes? I just see the dark abyss like Ross does
Well, not literally see. It's not like dreaming. It has to do with visualizing.
Someone with Aphantasia can imagine the smell of roses or the sound of thunder normally, but they can't mentally build things with Lego bricks inside their head, or visualize how their desk would look if they rearranged the objects on it.
Azulotus had so many adorable ones, loved them! :)
You definitely helped me be sure I am exactly the same as you are. I always have kind of descriptions in my mind but absolutely no images ! Thanks, it helps =)

Chat should be ashamed of themselves for cheating.
Ross' drawing for the wolf reminds me of these movies I would rent from Blockbuster as a kid. I can only remember the premise of one: Goldilocks and the Three Bears, but she's doing a reality TV home renovation for them.
Just realized Bojji has Bulbasaur mouth.
I have a different problem. I only draw good from memory when it’s in red pen, which you can probably figure out why it’s a bad thing
That's so interesting I also have aphantasia, it's very interesting to see other people who have it especially when they are a talented artist like yourself. Have you always had it? I believe mine developed after a surgery where I was put under as a kid but I have a bad memory so I may have always had it
Glad to see that Whisper was added, I love the IDW comics :O
i have aphantasia too, i cant draw anything from memory and it puts me off so much, being unable to translate what i want to draw into art is super difficult (and also my facial recognition SUCKS, if anyones curious i mix people up completely even if they're different race, i have no "picture" to reference them off of in my head so i have to try and learn all the words to physical traits before i can remember people) i can still dream though, as soon as i try to do it myself though it doesnt work, any voluntary visualisation doesnt work, and i think aphantasia can happen in other senses too? like smell or hearing, which i can still do that but mt visual memory is so poor because of it, sets me back so much and i feel like im limited in everything i do rip lool
If I had a nickle for everytime someone has drawn Chun Li in her classic outfit, I would be able to buy a both of the outfits professionally made
And I blame fortnite for that, as cursed as that sounds
OMG I also have aphantasia! Can't see in my dreams tho, it’s just inner monologue
“GET IN THE DAMN TIN CAN, SHINJI!” -Gendo Ikari, 1995
Hey look that's me
I suspect that I might have aphantasia too. I remember one time in school when I was really really young the teacher was talking about how you can close your eyes and imagine things and I tried and saw nothing. I told the teacher that I only saw black and she said “that’s impossible.” I just assumed I was like bad at thinking or something until I heard about aphantasia, don’t know why that teacher felt the need to gaslight me.
Part of that may be the fact that Aphantasia was only given a name as recently as 2015, with one a singular survey performed in the 70's about the "mind eye". even now almost no-one knows it exists.
I also have aphantasia, and you are the person who actually helped me realize that In a previous video of yours
Hey, congrats on 900k!
Another reminder that no, you are not supposed to "see" things with your eyes closed with the same clarity as though they were really there in front of you. I encourage everyone here NOT to be so quick to diagnose yourselves with aphantasia. I don't believe Ross represents it well, and it's unclear if he does really have it or if he's just been fed misinformation.
Huh?
There was never any mention of "clarity" in the introduction
He literally said the *inability* to visualize
What are you talking about
Based on how he talks about it in other videos I believe 100% he has it. However the fact that he has it is I think why he tends to describe it in such literal terms. It would be difficult (not impossible) to explain something you've never experienced in any way. Even people who can visualise or have inner monologues have trouble explaining it.
I mean based off what I hear, having aphantasia is probably like not being able to think pictures since you can't visualize it in your thoughts so I thought it's a little hard to diagnose yourself so easily lol. But I guess some people need that warning
@@luxrayever Ross has talked about this many times and I've seen it resulting in many people assuming that they themselves have aphantasia when they likely do not.
I cant even draw 😳
same :D
I would like to see you guys try to draw animations reverse, (the first frame would be the last basically)
I don’t really have a specific idea but maybe doing something trying to replicate popular art styles, like Disney, Seth McFarlane, Adventure time, etc.
This video should be seen by every person who ever wants to learn to draw. This is why references are essential, and I’m glad I watched this !
i have the same issue, but i also have weird specks in my vision (they might be floaters idk) and when i close my eyes i can outline them. i have dreams though which is super weird
I also have aphantasia, but it got worse over time. I used to be able to picture things vividly while both awake and asleep, but now I'm limited to dull and blurry dreams.
Love this stuff keep it up
Ross totally should do a competition for his community about garticmon, say if he needs some evolutions he can pick his favourites from what his community has drawn, and he could have the original artists name be a pun for the garticmon, or maybe mix the first evolutions name with it. Also this is an amazing video 🙃
I legit just got into moominvalley and the moomins 5 weeks ago and seeing snufkin and moomin content these days is a sign i meed to sacrifice my allowance for their books and mugs
The guessed for the pokémon ones could be very cool fakemon!🌻💖
Maybe region version of your rom hack?
I feel I have the same thing. Cause like when I try to imagine something. It’s like it’s super transparent. I can imagine it for a second but that’s about it. Usually when I draw from memory I just wing it tbh
For me, after I draw a character once, I can remember what they look like when I draw the character again. However, if I don't have a reference the first time, I just can't draw the character.
I might have the same condition it genuinely took me a while to realize when people say to picture something they can actually like see that thing I can imagined there traits but I never see anything
Just watched this months after but Ross talking about using swords on Alexander still got me? I need to rest.
The fact whisper looks like she’s trying not to look at the drawing killed me 😂
I can kind of visualize but just barely
I dont see anything when I close my eyes but I do remember what things look like and kind of see them in my head
I think that's normal
Oh boy, giving Moomin a Swedish flag is the type of thing wars are started over 🇸🇪/🇫🇮
I’m late but this video made me realize I have aphantasia and I never knew because I thought everyone felt the same way. I’d never heard of aphantasia before you mentioned it but when I went to read about it I thought “isn’t this normal”. I never realized people actually saw images in their head.
My thing is, I can see something's sometimes if I focus hard enough or space out if my eyes are open, if I close my eyes and try to Invision something, it's just blank and I can't imagine anything
Thank you for including my fave sad boy shinji 💕
nice to see a fellow artist with aphantasia :3
