A dedicated scientist---did great work in the area where often less educated people worked and gained skill but they could not recrd their ecperiences because of lack of education. It is also a branch of science which included lots of superstitions

So down to earth , so knowledgeable, living legend, every word about conservation and balance that he spoke was so legit. I am a die hard fan of his work. Love you ROM. God Bless you always for your deeds.

1987 - i was in school in India - i read a book by Rom & Zai Whitaker and wondered who this is...whiteman chasing snakes in hot india?
Then in between did watch his Komodo dragon docu, Gharial (Chambal) docu and read some of his works in newspapers/mags
2005 or 6 - I was in america - and I saw Rom's King Cobra documentary on Animal planet and was really impressed by it..because he stated something interesting 'people everywhere are outright terrified of snakes - but thats where Hinduism/Buddhism comes in..' where conservation is sort of built into the culture (our Gods like Siva has snakes around his neck, Durga has Lion/Tiger, Ganesha has elephant head, Visnu has Eagle and Krishna is always surrounded by cows, peacocks, birds, and what not...)
but unfortunately India is forgetting its culture of conservation and either polluting or ignoring its wildlife..and the work of likes of Rom is very valuable...
I admire that he followed his passion and left his comfortable life in america to come live in India..and contribute to India's wildlife..
I always tell my friends - India has everything -- great history great nature great culture -- but people are not aware what they have -- so I'm glad Rom did a life time of work in India..
Guess where I will go when I visit Chennai next time?
    Jaihind
    Haribol
