Taemin's songs are DEEP and philosophical. He's a master at layering multiple meanings within his songs. This is one case in point...lol. Many think this song is about seducing women. However this is a misdirection. "Want" employs many Christian elements to tell a specific story, as Taemin is a devout Catholic. The T-Pose, which is a signature pose of his, is in reference to the Cross, and he usually incorporates the sign of the Cross into his choreos. This song is a retelling of Genesis 3 -- the serpent and temptation. Let me explain:
During the introduction phase, we see alluring snippets of Taemin in various seductive poses with snakes and smoke (smoke & mirrors) however, you also see what looks like pools/drops of blood (Christ was the ultimate sacrificial lamb whose blood covers the sins of the world). Taemin opens the MV by dancing in slow, hypnotic, snake-like movements. Snakes/Serpents, which represent the idea of the tempter in the Bible, (in the ancient Hebrew - which derives from Akkadian & Ugarit - the word "snake/serpent" ["nchsh"]), used in this particular way grammatically in Gen. 3 is a triple entendre meaning "divine shining being". The snake was ancient iconography denoting spiritual guardian figures for gods. Eve wasn't talking with a snake, but a divine, shining throne guardian = later known as Satan/Lucifer/chief adversary of God. Gardens and mountains were typical metaphors for where gods dwelt because gardens were rare and mountains were mostly inaccessible to ancient peoples of that time period. When trying to interpret the Bible, it's VERY IMPORTANT to leave your 21st Century glasses on the table and look at the wording and imagery from the ancient Israelites' perspective using the language, culture, and history of that time period - from the second millennial BC up through the 1st Century AD. Things don't mean the same they do now. In addition, the ancient Near East peoples held a VERY supernatural worldview. Unfortunately, we have lost that today.
The glowing, bright white shirt Taemin wears fits in perfectly with the symbolism for "shining" and "the light". The chief adversary of Christ, as Lucifer (MEANING: "Light Bearer", or "The Shining One") was know for being the most beautiful cherubim. Thus I wouldn't be surprised if this part of his wardrobe was very intentional. Taemin is all about the little details. Lucifer/Satan was supposedly the most beautiful cherub. (The word "satan" is a misnomer which actually means "messenger" in the ancient Hebrew/Aramaic, as in the incident with Job. It was actually a job description which became a proper noun later during the intertestamental period and then appeared in the NT.). In addition there are creepy, demonic-looking beings around him at certain points when you slow it down. Although he's beautiful, he's hiding his demonic side in order to draw you in....a wolf in sheep's clothing.
Just before the bridge, there is a brief shot of a neon red/orange cross behind him, and he mimics the posture of Christ on the cross (which is Taemin's signature pose). In another scene, during the bridge, Taemin is elevated above the snakes and calls them to him because he's their father - the father of lies. The tempter in the garden was a master at twisting the truth, which lured Eve to sin, and she then led Adam to do the same. Behind him is a photo of him with his eyes covered: see no evil here...just gaze at my beauty and listen to what I say. People are blinded by beauty and inconvenient truth. It's more important to satisfy your own desires than to rip the scales from your eyes and act on truth. The eyes are the mirror to the soul. You also get a visual of a solar eclipse. Again a reference to Christ's death on the cross, as there was (according to both the Bible and present day astronomers) a solar eclipse when Christ died on the cross.
Even the lyrics reflect this theme: "The minute you take me in you'll be wanting more," in other words an addiction is formed. "....The sweetness of the forbidden apple...," tastes good, but once you get a little taste of sin, that which is forbidden, you'll want more and more because it "...awakens your senses," (in the Bible, when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, they became aware of the "knowledge of good and evil." Thus, they became aware of shame and guilt) and you will continually "...thirst for more." He'll "....wake you up from the silence of your deep sea." In ancient biblical times, the "sea" was a metaphor for chaos, because it couldn't be controlled. People were afraid of it because it was mysterious; you couldn't see beneath the surface; many died in it's chaotic waters. This is why the Bible (in Revelation) says there will be no more seas = no more chaos. Just as in Genesis 1 when God calmed the seas that covered the Earth which means He brought order out of chaos. When Adam and Eve were awakened to knowledge of good and evil, chaos once again ensued upon the Earth. He'll "help you see a new world," but is this really a good new world when innocence is stripped from you? "I'm your toy, I'll make you innocent." Most toys appear innocent and signify the innocence you had as a young child before gaining such knowledge, but the apple (forbidden fruit; actually scholars aren't sure what fruit it was) looked innocent too and "appeared" good to eat. Many poisonous things appear beautiful and delectable but those very qualities lure the unsuspecting victim to their death. Sin numbs you to immorality (truths become lies and vice-versa) and turns it into something "sweet" to the point it's justified and then those who can still see the corruption, try to warn people, or who don't themselves partake of that sin, are ridiculed. It was the serpent who distorted the truth and tempted with the one "forbidden apple" rather than the other acceptable fruit (like the fruit of the Tree of Life which gives immortality rather than death). Look at the state of our current world today, especially the last few years! Sin is running rampant and the world is in utter chaos. Right is wrong and wrong is right.
Sin invades so slowly, so subtly and satisfies your cravings to the point that you don't even realize it's happening until you're already addicted to it and scales form over your eyes (which were considered one of the ways to discern knowledge), and you have no clue because you're "...relying on your own self-control...moved by your body's and soul's" dark desires. The tempter says, "Open your eyes (to me rather than God). What do you want? I'LL MAKE YOU REALIZE WHAT YOU NEVER KNEW." Exactly. Adam and Eve never knew sin, until the tempter tricked them and revealed all and after that, humanity has always "wanted" more, driven by their selfish desires. Temptation gives birth to greed, lust, jealousy....all the 7 deadly sins. Before you know it, you have been gently and seductively led right to Rodin's famous "Gates of Hell" sculpture toward the end of the MV. You are left with a choice: 1) Embrace the sin and willingly go through those gates (guaranteeing passage through the gates of what the Bible calls Hell/Sheol -- an afterlife without the presence of Jesus, which also means utter darkness as Jesus is the light and the truth), or wash yourself clean in pure (holy) water (Christ promised to gift us with living water -- which was himself; his pure sacrificial blood that washes us clean), and there's only one way to do that - by believing in and accepting Christ as our savior -- the one who died for us. I'm sure there's probably much in there more that I've missed, but you can see just how detailed and meticulous Taemin is in delivering his message.
Taemin's 2020 album, "Never Gonna Dance Again" Acts 1 & 2 with "Criminal" & "IDEA" feature Heaven and Hell; light and dark - typical Christian themes - within the concepts of the entire album (Stockholm syndrome & Plato's Theory of Forms), and "Advice" reminds him not to listen to the advice of the collective "one" (Lucifer's whisperings, negative fans, his former company, outsiders) but to take his own advice because he wants to remain true to himself, his faith, and his own style of music which transcends the word, "Kpop".
    Thanks for another great reaction.

This definitely didn't deserve to be a representative for the WET category, we can do better discord! Regardless, it's still my favourite of Taemin's title tracks, and quite possibly my all-time top kpop MV, just pure art. Fun fact, the girl with the shadowy solo dance moment was a pre-debut Karina from Aespa!!

People just flat-out call him T-Pop because there’s no one out there like him. He does transcend!
This is pretty much what you can expect from solo Taemin. There’s a joke that Taemin is for the h*rny, religiously traumatized queer folks. Especially as his discography moves along, he incorporates more and more religious symbolism. The snake in this (and his always improvised first part) reference the temptation of the serpent in the Bible, among other things. And his “T-Pose” reminiscent of a cross is seen in most of his more recent MVs.
If you want wet, you’ve got to watch his MV for Move…basically the whole thing is in the rain. I don’t know why that wasn’t recommended instead!
You’ve probably guessed by now that he’s my ult, and SHINee is my Ult group now. You’ve now witnessed the extreme duality in him as an artist and a person! He plays a lot with duality in his work as well.
He’s actually having a comeback on the 19th and he’s just started unrolling the promos. His first trailer for his new song “Eternity” just released yesterday and, as someone with a religious past, the religious themes are strong in that one!

In "Want" Taemin is supposed to be portraying Lucifer. That's why he seems to have a love affair with those snakes. (The ones he is holding are real snakes.) And, like Lucifer, he is supposed to be seducing the audience and the girl using his devilish powers, which is why the choreography looks like he is slithering like a snake. The gate you see him standing in front of is supposed to be a representation of "The Gates of Hell" from French artist Auguste Rodin. Taemin is Catholic, and most of his MVs showcase his faith as it tells the story using numerous Biblical references.
Fun fact: That's not just any female dancer in Taemin's "Want" MV. The girl you see highlighted in the shadows is Yoo JiMin (Karina) who is the leader and main dancer of aespa. She participated in this song as a rookie trainee even before aespa's debut. ("Want" was released in February 2019 and aespa didn't debut until November 2020.) She also participated in some of his live comeback stage performances and she was in his "Want" dance practice video.
"Want" is one of those songs that the lyrics take the song and performance up to the next level. :D The lyrics give everything a whole other feel and it helps to explain the images and story you see being told in the MV.
Many people think that "Want" has a vampire vibe, and I can see where some might get the vampire feel from this MV. After all, one of Taemin's nicknames is SHINee's eternal vampire because in some performances and MVs, the way he looks and the aesthetic of the performance gives him a vampire image. But if you understand the story he is trying to tell within the MV, it's much deeper than that.
The style and aesthetic in "Want" is just the kind of vibe we have all come to expect from Taemin. He has a very sensual/sexy way of moving and, as a soloist, it's kind of his signature thing. That is why all his songs are titles such as "Danger," "Soldier" "Sexuality," "Tiger," "Press Your Number," "Guess Who," "Mystery Lover," "Hypnosis," "Crazy 4 U," "Flame of Love," " Under My Skin," "Thirsty," "Want," "Criminal," etc. or "Ace," "Already", "Door, "Pretty Boy," "Move" "Artistic Groove," "Famous," "Idea," etc. Each song is meant to show you exactly why he is one of the best in the industry even just by their titles. I find it interesting that all of his songs, with the titles alone, tell you exactly what Taemin is all about. If you look at all the titles of his songs, you will see that the titles convey one of two things about him, either painting a picture of his sexy and sensual onstage personality, or they explain his dedication and passion as an artist.
Taemin is very unique and never does the same thing twice, he is constantly switching up his sound and dance style. However, you will see that it will always be very Taemin-like. Many choreographers who have worked with him over the years have said that, with Taemin you can't help but allow him to move in whatever way his body takes him. Taemin is art in every sense of the word. :D
Taemin started when he was a child by copying dancers that he saw on TV such as Michael Jackson and Kpop star Bi Rain. And he didn't have any formal training until he joined SM. As trainees, SM originally planned to make SHINee a hip-hop group, so Taemin's dance training started out focusing on hip-hop dance styles like popping and locking. However, over the years, he has devoted himself to learning every style of dance. Now he is considered one of the top two best dancers. Taemin is literally the artist that everyone within the Kpop industry looks up to and respects.
Taemin has released at least one song or album -- most of the time way more than just one -- as part of SHINee, as a member of a project group, as a solo artist or as a member of SuperM every year since SHINee's debut. (Except for 2022 because he was on hiatus while he carried out his public service duties as part of his military requirements.) He is one of the only idols who has debuted in 3 Kpop generations -- second gen. with SHINee, third gen. as a solo artist and 4th gen. in 2019 as a member of SuperM -- and yet he is the same age or younger than most 3rd and even some 4th gen idols.
