+tomcloy1 The first scenes show the trains after a few changes had already been made. 1)Because of poor airflow, especially in hot summers, extra ventilation grilles were added and 2) at some stage only a few years after they were built some sort of dark blue material was added to the seatbacks in the door areas.
+citytransportinfo It wasn't added - that was one of the differences between the original C69s and the later C77s. The blue areas were additional heating as the original C69s only had ceiling mounted heaters, and were therefore always cold!
C stock never had air conditioning, apart from one unit (5513/6513 IIRC) which was fitted as a trial after refurb to see if it would work. It was actually quite effective.
The original Circle, District (Wimbledon to Edgware Road) and Hammersmith and City (originally the Hammersmith to Barking part of the Metropolitan line) lines' C Stock trains. Miss these guys too much.
the Wimbledon to Edgware Road service dates from something like 1926 - Edgware Road was rebuilt to have 4 platforms prior to a new line being built to the Kilburn area (deep level tube train tunnels for their mainline sized trains) but the govt. introduced new rules which meant that the Metropolitan Railway would not be allowed to use its trains with slam door compartments in the new tunnels - so they scrapped the new route.
+Waltrr Thanks. Yes, I have more historic footage to come. If you remember the 1983 Tube Stock which used to be on the Jubilee Line, this film may be of interest. ua-cam.com/video/BBtbzrtOeF4/v-deo.html
I liked the C stock ,and after refurbishment they rode better because the bogies were modified ,but they were not too bad in original form until some idiots wanted to try and make west London like Brooklyn and spray graffiti on them so a walk down Shepherd’s Bush Market was like the opening sequence to Saturday night fever ,funny what America does we seem to follow it’s not art it’s vandalism
1968Concorde I had the opportunity to get one arrested on the Northern line when he tagged a newly overhauled 59 stock I was driving . One of the few times a BTP patrol was just where I needed it lol. They came to take a statement from me at Morden depot a few days later and told me he had cupboards full of spray cans in his bedroom when they searched his house along with a couple of albums of his handiwork... all in all a good result.
I prefer the grey original interior. At least the seats faced each other and you could see through the window without twisting your neck. I miss these old beasts, the S stock is soo boring.
it does not look strange to me, but I prefer the newer version as the interior decor is much nicer (brighter, more colourful) and also because people cannot put their feet on the seats and the seat layout makes much more space for standing passengers
Same traction motors but they were hardly touched since they came into service so probably gathered up dust and all sorts over the years. When they refurbished them all of the traction motors were removed and cleaned thoroughly. Either that or new ones were ordered that were exactly the same ones. Not forgetting as well the floors were made of wood then and not as thick as the fireproof ones that were later placed on the trains. Personally I think the first prototype were better than the end product. I can't stand side seating.
citytransportinfo ah. just wondered. goes to show if transport is designed & built from the get-go there no reason why (with bit of work) they can't be kept running beyond their expected years; as per the iconic routemasters.
+KasHCubeD There were only two refurbished cars and they ran in the middle of a 6 car train that included four not refurbished cars. When I boarded the train at Wimbledon I was inside the front car but during the journey changed to the refurbished cars. I left the train at Putney Bridge.

Thank you for such a mutated ride. The second version with major refurbishment looks quite interesting. But the 1990 era looks quite nasty, unfortunately....
+Jeffrey Ornstein The interior ambiance was much nicer after refurbishment - the 1960's grey was very dull. But they were colder in the winter, because the refurbishment included removing the 'semi-compartment' type of seating and the draught screens.
It's quite shocking seeing a tube train that badly graffitied. It looks like a New York subway train it is so bad. I was born in 1986, so I guess I missed the period when the trains being vandalised.
the C stock suffered the worst for graffiti one of the reason could be that many of them were kept in Barking sidings during the weekends and Bank Holidays

+MrGriser sorry I dont know that either. In those days information was not so easy to obtain and sometimes it was just a case of being lucky / at the right place at the right time.

Steve Walden does that mean they were always air conditioned?

They sounded very different too prior to being refurbished.
Indeed they did!
The initial seating layout is far from ideal for something like the circle line. They must have gotten carried away with the A stock.
I love the old slamming of the door. I'll miss that

These sound very similar to our Transperth A series EMUs

I Miss It Too
I really miss the c stock
In the first view, the train looks eerie, especially with the graffiti!
Unfortunately I had never gotten to ride one of these, there's something about 20th Century Engineering that new trains can never quite capture...
I think that 1930s and even 1940s trains were better!
They did the District line Wimbledon to Edgware Road line to cover the District line due to the short platforms

The 1990 one is very dirty
especially in the 1990's graffiti became a serious problem.
Hardly any graffiti on trains now. Mainly because of CCTV and London Underground's huge crackdown pushing for prison sentences for offenders.

sorry its virtually impossible to tell unless you can see the car number
the prototype refurb was the hybrid unit where the DM car was C77 but the trailer was C69
The C77 DM car was built to replace the one damaged beyond repair by the IRA bombing at West Ham in March 1976.
