Need your thoughts... I am looing to buy either a 36 Walk behind or 36 Stander as a secondary mower to get into gated back yards. The cost of the walk behind is $2000+ less than the 36 Stander. With the $2000+ savings I can add a sulky, chute blocker, grass catcher ot the Walk behind and still go out for an expensive steak dinner with the savings. Ha! Which type of mower would you buy and why?
I think as a secondary unit you can’t go wrong with a walk behind. Even as a main unit I think they are great. it just offers so much versatility in so many different conditions. Stand ons are great if all you have is flat areas to mow. They are quick and great for stripes vs using a walk behind with sulky, although you can get a swivel wheel sulky that will mimick a stand on mower as well. Thanks for watching.
@@LawnCareBusinessSuccess Thanks so much for your reply. Some of my gated backyards also have steep hills/banks and the walk behind will tackle them much easier than the Standon. Thx for helping me make this decision. BTW, I recently listened to one of your podcasts and was surprised to hear you speaking with a local guy. And, you also mentioned Paul Camara which I would love to meet. Both landscapers are very close by. Thanks for all you do!
A couple of things you can turn up the hill and not lose productivity also a pair of baseball cleats will keep you from slipping and possibly getting hurt
Agree with you fully about versatility, but I will add that the walk behinds are much slower than a zero turn that's the only thing that sucks. I personally own a 2006 36 turf tracer. The thing runs like a freaking clock especially since I do routine maintenance on it. Cuts amazing and overall I am very happy with it. I have just used many zero turns and stand ons and the walk behinds are just slower. The stand on is pretty much a walk behind that's faster. I've used stand ons on some very steep grades with no issues.
I agree. I run a stander and just bought a walk behind today. I will say though they all have their place. I'm in tn in the mountains but if I was somewhere that was flat I'd probably have a sit down.
maybe buy yourself some "ice creepers" for your shoes to help with grip. You can leave them on the mower when not needed. Slip on and off your shoes easy.
Thanks! We have steep hills we mow. Not quite as steep as that hill, but much more of it! We have been using a 42” walk behind Gravely. It’s over 40 years old. Showing some wear. An EXmark 48” has been recommended by the man who brings our mulch and does lawn service. I must say this video eases my mind a bit about making the switch and giving up my beloved Gravely with the steering break. BTW, I’m 66 and enjoy walking behind my mower for 2 hours to mow.
Have mowed slopes like that with push mowers an was more concerned about the engine oil pump sucking air. But then I'm a retired mechanic an always think about how my equipment feels.
Just got a Toro Proline 44 inch no sulky on it yet. Got it used has a mulch kit on it thinking about taking it off. Its hydro with pistol grips still getting the hang of using it. Had it on a few steep inclines slides a little bit but these are very steep inclines not sure of degree but its also been pretty wet here so hoping next year to get a sulky with a chute guard of some sort. Keep showing the steep incline vids cause anyone can mow a flat yard. GG
Congratulations. I found that hydro walk behinds have the biggest learning curve of any mower I ever used. I think it took me a month to be fully comfortable using mine around parked cars etc. once you get the hang of it though they are awesome. Thanks for watching.
I use to use a 48" turf tracer when I lived in Alabama and it would definitely hold the hills, not all the hills could be rode on but definitely could do it if you walked behind it. Not sure how the 36" does since I never used one.
looking at buying a 36" hydro toro proline walk behind, do you think the performance will be comparable to your mower in the video? also, im in Georgia where its most bermuda grass, ive noticed most 36" walk behinds dont have anti scalp wheels, any recommendations on avoiding scalping lawns with the 36" walk behind? new to lawn care, second year part-time, i have about 30 lawns that ive been maintaining with a couple toro timeasters, and looking to upgrade. thanks for all your helpful content.
I’ve never used a proline so I can’t say for sure. My 36” turf tracer has one anti scalp wheel. I do see it doing it’s thing all the time but I’m not sure how much it helps. Thanks for watching.
Great video. I bought the Toro Proline 36 inch for some properties that have small gates and hills. One of them Is probably as steep as the one here or maybe a tad bit more and bumpy and it definitely slides a little. Hard to keep it from sliding. On my other ones it holds it’s weight. Any recommendations on the best two wheel sulky/velkie whatever you want to call it and why?
The only experience I have is with the Jungle Jim’s Accessory Products Jungle Wheels Sulky I have. It’s been great and works well. They have been making them for decades. Thanks for watching.
All my walk mowers have done hills fine, some hills steeper than that and much higher. 1988 Snapper varriable belt 36, 1990 Toro 44 (both retired) and my Deere walk mowers 1991 36" GS25, 1997 36" GS30, 2007 48" 7H17 all Deere mowers are active, and live for hills 😀 🖖. You should remove the Jungle Wheels as they are making your mowers front end light, by adding too much mass behind the bars!
Easily be able to mow it, I would just either take the sulky off or just walk behind the sulky. Definitely can't pull you and the machine itself on that steep of a grade but I know for a fact it will do it.
Let me know in the comments below if you use or have used a walk behind mower for hills and slopes in your lawn care business.

Good tips. Thanks for watching.
Impressive machine there.
Yes for sure. Thanks for watching.
I used a 52inch exmark turf tracer at BWI airport years ago and I cut stepper and bigger hills than what he just did
Awesome!! They are great machines for sure. Thanks for watching.
Walk behind mowers are tanks!! I would make a walk behind my first mower over a sit down!! More versatile!! Well done sir!!
I agree. I think walk-behinds, especially the hydro models are the most versatile mower you can buy. Thanks for watching.

We don't have a walk behind (yet) but for a slope like that i would just use a zero turn. Probably a stand on.
Thanks for watching.

Yup. Definitely something to take into consideration. Thanks for watching.
If I was doing crazy slopes like that I’d put an oil pressure gauge so I can see if I go to far.
I personally prefer using the TTs we have at work for slopes, seems a lot more stable than the ZTRs (Lazer Z). If only they make a 72” walk behind.
Yes definitely I agree. They just feel so stable on hills. Thanks for watching.
Does anybody if anyone make a 72 walk behind or is the biggest a 60?
Very impressive, thanks for the demo.
No problem. Thanks for watching. 👍

nice job...watch those knees and ankles.
Thanks. Yes bad knees and ankles can ruin a perfectly good day. 😂 Thanks for watching.
