Rewatching some of these Milwaukee oldies in anticipation of the Mile returning this 2024. Just dawned on me that we don’t have that cool side of the driver forward view anymore due to the Aeroscreen. It’s so great now for the mega safety boost the Aeroscreen provides.
Those 2.65 turbocharged V8s sure sounded great. I was fortunate to attend CART/Indycar races at Long Beach and Laguna Seca from the late 80s through the mid 90s. I loved it, always had a GREAT time, but even then I didn't realize what an absolutely Golden era that was. Even the TV commentating team was very special. I also thought the Truesports car was great looking, too bad it was never successful. Thanks for posting these!
I was at this race, I was 6 years old and remember AJ Foyt blowing his engine in front of me. This race got me hooked on racing. I'm looking forward to going this year. I bet it will be much more exciting than watching the Danicam crap on ABC. Thanks Indycars for posting this. Now all we need is open-wheel cars running at another Wisconsin racetrack about an hour or so north of Milwaukee
How did we lose? We gained a reunified IndyCar with the best teams, drivers, tracks, and balanced schedule of oval/road/street racing that made the CART IndyCar World Series the pinnacle of motorsport in the 90s.
@rodentcafeteria i see you have a point, but this was the original indycar series. If i remember right, their official name was "PPG IndyCar World Series sanctioned by CART" or something like that. I think the trouble started when the IMS registered "IndyCar" as a trademark and Tony George built up his own series with that name. I´m sorry if im wrong.
Today's IndyCars are still the fastest open wheel race cars on Earth. I admit they don't look as good as 90s - 00s CART IndyCars, but they definitely look better than modern F1 cars. A race car's performance and its ability to put on entertaining races is much more important than its looks. Turbocharged IndyCars also return in 2012 so we'll be getting the "same cars" in 2 years. As for the tracks, 9 out of 17 tracks on the 2010 schedule hosted CART/CC races in the past.
I know the reason wasn’t very good towards the end of the stint with Indy cars at Milwaukee. But we have a lot less downforce now and I think it’s time we go back to Milwaukee. I’m also a Wisconsin native and I really want them to go back to Milwaukee.
Tony George is no longer in charge. If you want to save you favorite sport, then stop blaming him, and support IndyCar. Look at the bright spots. Most of the best teams and drivers from CART/CC/IC race on a 50/50 mix of ovals and road/street courses (an even mix we haven't seen since the 90s). IZOD has done more promotion in 3 months than any other title sponsor in IRL history. And we have 5 chassis manufacturers who want to build the 2012 IndyCar.
IndyCarAce ; I do the Cart Series was new stuff to me.My first race I saw was 02 Indianapolis 500 forgot who won that day but finish was awesome aswell less commercials for motorsports in 2000s.
The war between CART/CC & the IRL ended over 2 years ago with Tony George saving CC's best teams, drivers, and tracks. Today's IndyCar is more like CART in the 90s than CC ever was.
This may sound strange but did those Little windshields that they had on the front of their cars back then, did they really do anything for the driver?????
You should be thanking the IRL for posting classic IndyCar races on UA-cam for us to enjoy. How is the IZOD IndyCar Series a joke when it features the same teams, same tracks, and same challenge of oval/road/street racing that made the CART IndyCar World Series the pinnacle of motorsport in the 90s?
Interesting to see how ABC would "cheat" a bit at times: when a pass for the lead would occur during commercial, they would replay the pass when they came back on the air, but Paul Page would call it as if it was happening live, before they cut back to live footage!
Nothing makes for exciting racing like saving fuel. Is the car broke Al? Maybe the tires have gone off!! I bet he's letting everyone pass him because he's trying to be the last one running when they throw the checkers.
One last thing. People always will complain. Some of them are brainless, some have nice reasons. It's not helping to tell people "just sit down and enjoy the little that you have". Why did we have to put up with it in the first place? What was so wrong 15 years ago? The facts: they came back to roads/streets. They are considering turbos. Brazilians still win the 500. If I knew that CART would've self-destroyed if there was No split, I'd admit I lost. I want nice racing too. All of us want it.
@penske13, Let's set things straight - I respect Indy. You are overloving it, the guys at the cc forum are overhating it. I do not deny the history and the size of it. But one race does not make a championship. I don't like dp01 for the raised nose and I don't like Dallaras for the intake above the head. IMO, this makes them look like F1. And indys should be unique. =>
The IRL will be dead soon. A complete and final death of the IRL will be the only way American Open Wheel racing can be something to be proud of again.
NASCAR/ISC owns Michigan Int'l Speedway and Calfornia Speedway and didn't offer the IRL a fair deal. That may change now that NASCAR/ISC need to attract more fans. Road America can't afford to host an IndyCar race. Laguna Seca can't afford to host an IndyCar race w/o sponsors. Surfer's Paradise offered the IRL less money than they paid CART/CC. There wasn't even enough to cover travel costs. After A1GP went bankrupt, expect Surfer's Paradise to offer the IRL a fair deal.
Goodness...so much bickering. In reality we all want the same things but want it in different ways or came from different backgrounds as fans. As long as we can keep our eyes on the prize and bend a little here and there we can make unification means something. Stop bickering because it is what is and it was what it was. We should concentrate on the now and the future and learn from the past and bickering is not learning.
@kjhartje ...and for the record I am her fan but because of the facts I mentioned earlyer, not because she looks how she looks. (If you consider her atractive.)
I heard he wants to buy the whole shooting match back as well, but he can't let go. He's had 12 years, time to let someone else run it. What will bring down the irl will be keeping this same, old, tired D/H/F formula. Spec racing isn't what Indy was supposed to be about, but, unfortunately, that's what it is right now. That needs to change first, before anything.
"same teams, same tracks, and same challenge of oval/road/street.." Did you say cars? Tell me about them. I just want to see them through somebody else's eyes. Do you really like them? Why? And what tracks do we talk about? Where are the 2-mile ovals? Where is the american "Spa", where are Laguna, Surfers, Milwaukee, Detroit, Portland, Nazareth?
No FTG, I'm surprised. Rating's aren't ok. They're downright bad, frankly. IndyCar didn't really have much of a choice. Only 5 or 6 races last year weren't interfered with in terms of starting late or ending early while they were on ABC/ESPN. As for being an enabler, TG's no longer in charge. All he's got is "Vision" Racing.
@snoriq I really do not have a problem with Danica as much as my problem is with ABC showing her car riding around at the back while there is a battle for the lead. (St. Petersburg 2011 is the most recent example) Yes she brings money and viewers and does deserve some extra attention but showing her car for 10 minutes non-stop without even mentioning the race going on up front is what really gets to me. That is why I posted Danicam crap, Danica is fine, just ABC's coverage is crap.
The Milwaukee Mile promoter went bankrupt and didn't pay the IRL or NASCAR for putting on races this year. Detroit has been destroyed by the recession. And it wasn't even a great track. I'd rather have Michigan Int'l Speedway back on the schedule. Portland Int'l Raceway can't afford an IndyCar race. Nazareth Speedway closed in 2004. The reason none of those tracks host IndyCar races today are because of either the track owners or the recession. You can't blame the IRL for that.
@kjhartje Hi I agree with everything except of "Danica crap". Look at it from other point of view. 1. Motrsport fanbase is globally decreasing. Less fans mean less money, less money less races, drivers etc... 2. Even thou she is (globally) average, she is one hell of a driver for the fact that she is a women. 3. As a woman she is quite refreshing factor. 4. She brings more money and fans to motorsport than (possibly) all other drivers. She, with Michelle Mouton is best woman driver ever. :)
=> Indycars could've rivaled f1 and could've taken wins over it. And just when they started coming close, somebody kicked the chair from underneath them. I don't agree with a lot of CART/CC's moves, and I don't think that creating a new league helped too. IMO, both sides are fans of chships with idiot leaders. And that makes none of us winners. CC died. IRL almost did and will recover only when led by potent people. There are problems. Please don't tell me you don't see any.
It aint about speed is it? It's about the fact that Indycar is about to die thanks to one mr. Georgie. his actions from 15 years ago are about to completely kill off open wheel racing.
@IndyandNascarsuck Do we really need the insults? I don't like Tony George either and hate that Racin' Gardner could buy his way into the Indy 500. However, if you keep looking at the past ,you'll trip over your future. Let's not forget that CCWS had problems too. How did Spike Tv work out? And you failed again. Still with the FTG. Jesus, it never ends for you. Put the past behind you. I already did.
The golden era of these cars and drivers lots of good memories back then some of mine funnest moments. How time flies!
I love that we're able to see the whole feed without commercials :)
Rewatching some of these Milwaukee oldies in anticipation of the Mile returning this 2024. Just dawned on me that we don’t have that cool side of the driver forward view anymore due to the Aeroscreen.

I finally figured it out. Michael has a white roll hoop and Mario has a red one.
I love the looks of the 1991 Short Track package! Beautiful design
These vintage races are awesome! Keep posting them!
AntiSpeed ; Sure amazing classic Cart Racing.
Great upload. Thanks Indycar.
Wow I LOVE THE SOUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@rodentcafeteria

IndyCarAce ; Not really more horsepower in 90s good engines even the Famous Buick V6 & McLarens engines were tough.
All Andretti podium special. RIP John.

Real cars , unlike todays Crapwagons.
rt2000pilot ;Yes most definitely not even close more power & horse's in those Cart cars in 90s.
This may sound strange but did those Little windshields that they had on the front of their cars back then, did they really do anything for the driver?????
+Andrew Silva Yes, they diverted the air up and over the helmet. At the very least, they helped reduce buffeting for the driver.
Andrew Silva : it had to work if they raced in the rain.
You should be thanking the IRL for posting classic IndyCar races on UA-cam for us to enjoy. you'd be surprised how many broadcasters do that, v8 supercars do that all the time
Beautiful colors & coverage since this is a 91 race.Do they still race on this track I luv it.
Nothing makes for exciting racing like saving fuel.
Is the car broke Al? Maybe the tires have gone off!! I bet he's letting everyone pass him because he's trying to be the last one running when they throw the checkers.
505197 ; So true q

Too bad they screwed the pooch 15 years ago
IICS please save Milwaukee!!

@indycars wasn't this known as C.A.R.T in 1991? or did C.A.R.T never exist?

this isn't a irl race. this is a CHAMP CAR RACE. STOP TRYING TO STEAL HISTORY!!

@penske13. OK, you want me to be serious about it? We are both defeated. You and me and everyone. We've lost racing. Racing is gone. Dead. Erased.
My web is very lazy and that video is long. I can't watch.
I watched vintage Cart & Indy Race's that were 3-4 hours long on UA-cam.
