Back in the good old days where you could pretty much order any car you wanted and select from a long list of options and features, clever buyers always figured out a way to get General Motors to build some pretty special hardware. Case in point? This 1966 Chevrolet Nova SS hardtop (not a 2-door post sedan), which packs a matching-numbers L79 327/350, a Muncie 4-speed and a ton of original documentation including the Protect-O-Plate.
Ostensibly designed as a budget commuter car, careful selections on the order form could transform the Nova into a street brawler with few equals. That lightweight body shell was perfect for racers (then and now), and what better compliment to it than a high-revving small block that cranked out well over one horsepower per cubic inch? Of course, that heavy-duty engine meant that you needed a heavy-duty drivetrain to match, which this car carries, and it's all matching numbers. Rare? Only 5481 L79s were built, but not all of them were SS models, making this a highly unusual car.
The recipient of a high-quality, frame-off restoration very recently, this rare SS presents today as possibly the ultimate factory sleeper. The paint and bodywork is absolutely first rate, which, considering the massive aftermarket for parts on these cars, shouldn't be surprising. Fortunately, the guys who restored this car were absolute pros, and you can't find any evidence of repairs or new metal, only clean, straight bodywork. Look at the character line that stretches from end to end on this car and see how it forms an unbroken line; that's what expert panel alignment looks like. Gaps are excellent, again suggesting that the guys doing the work knew exactly what they were doing-it's no small feat making these cars look like this, especially one with a hi-po engine that has probably spent quite a bit of time at full throttle. The paint code W Chateau Slate is 2-stage urethane with just the right amount of metallic in it for an authentic look, and the subtle color really enhances the sleeper look. Lots of time was spent sanding and buffing the finish to its current show-level appearance, and you won't be disappointed when you see it for the first time.

My dad had one of these back in the day when they used to drag on the street all the time. This is my favorite old mussel car. I would love to have this on just as it is, I wouldn't change a thing.
