The Direct Drive V4 by Barber Electronics - Worth the Wait!

- In this episode, we check out the Direct Drive V4 by Barber Electronics. We have three very early versions of this pedal and it is one of our favorite overdrives of all time! In fact, it has been used on more episodes on this channel than any other pedal. The Beard purchased his first Direct Drive directly from the Barber Electronics shop, driving to Maryland at the time to pick it up. One of the highlights of PJ and the Beard’s short history was to have David Barber join us for an interview episode in the basement where we film the show. How often do you get to sit down and chat with the creator of one of your all-time favorite pieces of gear? That said, we are super excited to get our hands on the latest version of the Direct Drive and it only gets better. In the year and 10 months, we have been doing this channel we have never recommended or said the following, but we will now… Buy this pedal and buy it now. You simply will not be disappointed.

Thanks for the review/demo. It was great catching up with you Jason, with so few people in my daily orbit thanks to covid 19, it was nice to chat about guitar on the breezy porch at 6ft, you even got to speak a couple of times! :-)
Always fun to hang out! The version 4 is just killer. As you can tell, it is hard for me to move on when I find something I really like. That version one has been the go to for so long.
Barber, all I’ve heard from you over the years, it’s spot on. Great everything. Cheers!
This is THE Barber of Barber electronics?! "We are not worthy!" Cheers, my pedal collection is *meagre* but I always use and would never sell my DD. Rock on!
Everything changed for me, when I got my Gain Changer SR. I leave it on: 80% of the time. It's so Amp-like and touch-sensitive - with my Lollar Dirty Blonde's. That pedal is "Going to the Grave with me" (and David is great to do business with) oNe LovE from NYC
That sounds amazing!!! I'm so glad David i back in production !
Love the Barber stuff!
We do too!
Great as always!
Thanks Brodie!
Please ask Dave to make a Double Changer! A 2 channel overdrive with the low gain SR on one side and the high gain unlimited on the other. That would smoke!
I’ll pass it in next time we talk. He is pretty active on their Facebook page if you suggest it there.
Nice Job guys!!
Love seeing barber pedals getting some good love… the one pedal on my board that hast changed from 19 to 36 is my barber direct drive red LED
I have a green and a red led. I asked Dave why they had different LED’s the other day. He gave me two reasons. One, it was what they had in stock the day the built them, the other was that he may have built the pedal and he is color blind. Made me chuckle.
Love your videos guys! Helped me discover Barber pedals. Love my GC SR and have a DD v4 on the way!
Glad to hear it! Barber's pedals are great. Appreciate the comment.
Thanks guys! Your video was my first exposure to Barber pedals. Love 'em! The Direct Drive is my go-to for MIAB.
The direct drive has been my go to for about 20 years! It awesome that we have had the opportunity to get to know David through the channel. It’s great when there are incredible people behind the products we love.
Hey you two. Sounds great. Always has. Might have to get this latest one as my first from they’re good company. Cheers!
Highly recommend the Direct Drive mike. It is my favorite drive pedal... -Beard
Very cool sounds 👍
Thanks Brad!
This is a cool review. I don’t even remember why I decided on a DD there were no reviews I knew about at the time. I just popped it open. Apparently it was built Oct 12 2002. The gear god was guiding my hand, because it’s been on my board ever since.
If I remember correctly I saw it on musictoyz and read an article on guitar player magazine. I lived close to them and called them up. Drove down and bought a factory second from them. Been on my board ever since too. Really like the new version. -Beard
@@PJandtheBeard Thanks for the reply. Man, that’s awesome when that works out that you can drive over to where something is being made to pick it up!
I just subscribed to your channel there’s some real good content in here! David Barber sounds like quite a character. Josh at JHS calls him a legend. Dang, all y’all have a high opinion of him. I have to find that interview you were talking about.
@@andrewkoastephens210 the interview where he came over was split into three parts. You can find all three at the same place on our site. He also popped in on several of the 19 conversations episodes. Totally agree with Josh... legend. pjandthebeard.com/the-interviews
Really nice demo of the sounds, the breakup on PRS in intro is a great setting. One of my fave pedals, I've had the original for more than a decade, the range on the EQ to go from mid-heavy fusion to tube screamer is great.
The original I paid like 150-200ish
We have three originals DD’s. Two are really early ones. I still have one of the originals on my board so we can use the new one on the channel. I have run it live and it’s better. Definitely worth checking out if you like the pedal as much as I do!
@@PJandtheBeard Out of curiosity how can you date them? Obviously the casing changed, and I know I have one of the original style, but I am curious if there's a way to date them? I bought 2008ish, or earlier.
Do you like the older DDs better? I would really like to know. Thank you.
@@PJandtheBeard Wait, you mean you prefer the newer / compact one? This actually might be one pedal I'd be willing to buy two versions of
Thanx guys. No sh@t I pretty much tried to buy one every year or 2 for years. Always some crazy thing happened a few months ago the shop was closed. I sent Email a couple of times without a reply ??? But maybe the gods wanted me to get v.4 LOL
Not like Barber to not reply, not sure what happened there. You'll love the v.4 so it may have worked out for the best!
Hello, is DD v4 keeping the low end from the amp or does it cut it? I am looking for a "flat" drive which doesn't have that tubescreamer hump. Thx.
I’ll see if I can get Dave to answer that.
@@PJandtheBeard Thank you!
We try, but the DD is not meant to be a flat response distortion. The closest we make to flat response is the Gain Changer SR.
@@barberelectronics5672 Thx Dave. Is GC doing the TS-type thing? Soft clipping/clean sound under drive sound?
@@roar140 Yes, it is soft clipping in the - feedback loop 2x1n4148 in each direction. All of my overdrives you some form of that.
What about the @$#% bridge pickup?? Kind of useless if you stay on the neck and middle positions for high gain stuff.
We try and think through and cover all the options but miss things sometimes. Sorry.
Where do I buy a Tremolo shirt!!! I’d also pay good money for that beard.
There is a link in the description of every video for the t-shirts. Free beard hair with every purchase. lol
