I'm typing this post from my Mint 20 desktop. I did a clean install this time around. I've done many upgrades over the years, and they always end up being more work than just biting the bullet, and doing the clean install. The worst upgrade I ever did was 18.3 to 19. What a nightmare that was complete with boot loop after the required purging of the old window manager to install LightDM. I learned my lesson with that one. Incremental upgrades on the same package base are fine, but when going to the next major version I'll never do an upgrade again.

For me, the upgrade from Linux Mint Mate 19.3 to 20 was necessary, because Mate has a new compositor that makes my really old and unsupported graphics card work way better than with other compositors, and I love Linux Mint Mate

LOL, I have the reverse problem. My graphics card is brand new and AMD quit supporting the oldest OpenGL. :) Fortunately you can switch the backend to a later version of OpenGL and some other API and it works fine again.

I have two desktops and I upgraded both a few days apart and I have not had any problems, so far. **knock on wood** Primarily because of Warpinator...I'm still kind of a newbie to Linux and the ability to transfer files without using a jump drive or cloud storage makes my world a lot easier. Thanks Tom for another great video.

Yep... I learned that the hard way (went from 19.1 to 19.3 to 20.04 and then back using TimeShift... killed it. Then reinstalled.)

I upgraded my MacBookPro from 19.3 to 20 - no problems! I have Home on a separate partition so i used a live USB to start Linux Mint 20, format the root partition and installed without touching Home. I had a backup of my installed software with Backup Tool so i easily reinstalled all my software...

The laptop hardware that was having problems with LM20 has been fixed. I have not come across any other problems except on my daily driver, Snapd had disabled my apt package manager and I was unable to repair/replace it and had to do a full install. Mint 20 is running fast and stable, zero problems or bugs.

Great and timely video. I have used LM 18.3 and 19.3. Both ran satisfactorily. I tried LM20 and the simple scan did not work. I returned to 19.3 and everything worked again. So for both my laptop and desktop, I run 19.3. I needed a stable easy to use system. LM20 is still a work in progress and it has tools that I already have when I use PuppyLinux. I was given the option to upgrade but I decided against it.
I came to the same conclusion that you have. Keep up the good work. I will also have a look at the Bible Time application.

I upgraded My Desktop, but the Laptop hooked to my TV, it can run 19.3 until then. To upgrade, I tried that way, but it failed, so I got the ISO for 20 and just burned it to a USB Thumb Drive, restarted my computer (after disconnecting a few Hard drives) and simply wiped out 19.3 and installed 20. I am on that now.

We have 2 desktops Mint 19.3 and 19.1 and a laptop on 19.3 - no plans to upgrade yet. If I do, it'll be via a clean install rather than the upgrade path. (After backing up the Home partition naturally).

Upgraded one old Dell Optiplex so far. Seems to work fine. Honestly think it would've taken less time to backup and install fresh though. As for changes, nothing to write home about. Guess most of the advancements are under the hood this time around.
Update: Upgraded second machine (same model). Again works fine BUT I've noticed that installing Google chrome via .Deb direct from Google doesn't add a PPA. How will it auto update?

Yes, I definitely would recommend just doing a fresh install. You don't even have to backup. Just copy everything relevant from your home-folder and it should be fine. Maybe you want to copy a few things from a folder under /usr/share too, that is optional. Other than that, make a script to install al the software which you use, that way after a clean install you only have to enter one command to get all the programs installed again.

This past weekend I upgraded my production machine to Linux Mint 20 and it had so many issues that I decided to try out a new distro. I installed Manjaro 20 XFCE and it ran like a charm. I'll roll with this until the Linux Mint team can sort the issue with version 20. I've used Mint since 17 and this was the first time that a new release gave me problems. Loving Manjaro though.

Nope I won't ... I use Peppermint OS. Yes it's less complete then Mint ... but less bug, less ressources taken by the OS. Peppermint is a beast with a candy flavor. If you are interested in Mint, I really suggest you to watch a video about peppermint OS first ... if you wanna install Linux Mint after, go ahead ... but I think lot of people will prefer to choose Peppermint. My old afterglow xbox360 driver wasn't working in Mint but works perfectly with Peppermint. I just install few open source software and voilà ... Peppermint is perfect !!!

Good video clip! I have several different older Laptops. My main Laptop is running Windows 10, with Lubuntu in the VirtualBox. The other Laptops and PC most have Linux as the Host. I am currently using ZorinOS, Lubuntu, Mint, and Lite. Linux has great packages, and I like the versions that are based on Ubuntu. A huge factor for me, and you did mention it, is the Architecture 64 Bit requirement. I have three other laptops that can only have 4 GB Max, and is 32 Bit Architecture, so I am unable even to run Mint 20. I actually have two laptops with x64 Duo Core, that could run Mint 20, yet I prefer a more robust lighter version, 18.04, which is set to be unsupported 04/2023. What is happening is that Linux was always thought of as a good alternative on older hardware, and by forcing a 64 Bit Architecture requirement is starting to cut-off computers that are older than around 2005. All good stuff! The reason I keep Windows is due to my older Windows programs, that I actually install in the VirtualBox, usually using Windows XP. I also use the Dual Boot feature. Have not tried to put Windows, MAC, and Linux all on the same computer, yet I do not see a problem with that.

I generally follow the process of installing the latest machine on new configs and then six months or so later I will look at upgrading machines that have earlier versions. This gives developers time to catch show stoppers and fix them and correct minor issues as well. Since most of my systems are home level production systems rather then business level production systems using primarily older hardware (5 - 15 years older) upgrading is not a high risk move. Most of my data is kept on a couple of NAS units so this also removes risk.

Did the upgrade to Linux Mint 20 on a ThinkPad T480. The upgrade took a long time to complete (about 45 minutes), which is ridiculous considering that the ThinkPad is using a Samsung 860 SATA SSD. A fresh install of Linux Mint 20 would be much quicker at about 12 minutes. Noticed after the upgrade that the shutdown time is cut in half, and the LibreOffice programs start significantly quicker (about 60% faster). Biggest downside is that idle RAM usage increased by 300 MB (from 1.3 GB to 1.6 GB).

Hi - I know this video has been up for a while, but as I finally was curious as to what you had to say about the 20 upgrade I decided to watch. I am in full agreement with you the latest and greatest isn't always that great and to quote an old saying "If it's not broke-Don't fix it!" . Now that being said - I do like to use newer software when it is available and I've been with the Linux Mint builds since version 15. You did mention something that has been kind of a new pet peeve with the Linux Mint teams efforts and that's in order to put out the very best OS that's user friendly to especially those newbies coming over from the MS dark-side stick with what works. My peeve is this: WHY in the world would they stop adding the very simple upgrade system that worked so well in previous version. especially for a newbie! I mean COME ON- not everyone who jumps onboard to Linux Mint is going to be a Terminal Wizard! Soooo- Why not keep that method of simply using the upgrade manager to upgrade to a newer version - that is why it's called an UPGRADE MANAGER!

I had to switch to linux mint 20, since in the previous versions bluetooth and wi-fi refused to work. I tried to upgrade the Kernel (even to almost the latest 5.7, which helped only to start bluetooth, not the wi-fi), I even tired the manual from the official HP website - it didn't work. However, I tried first Ubuntu 20.04 - everything worked perfectly fine, and then I was waiting until Linux Mint team will come up with the new release, and now I've installed the xfce version and it is working perfectly fine. However, I have to agree with Tom on this, if everything works perfectly fine, I suggest to wait intil at least 20.1 release will come up and install it. Until then, stick on the version you are working on. Thnx for the video.

Regarding not upgrading a distro I had a very bad experience. I was on Kubuntu 19.04 I think , did not upgraded then and with 20.04 version the OS lost the functionality to upgrade because the support for that version was dropped. Now the OS was not able to update packages nor upgrade at all. I was told it was a bug and none of the fixes I found worked. This is not the first time I had issues with Ubuntu upgrades so that's when I moved to Manjaro. It's not perfect either but at least all fixes have worked so far.

The age of the machines runs for six to twelve years old and all three machines running Mint 20 have no issues, everything works right out of the box. Maybe it would best to wait until the upgrade document is finalized too. I upgraded four of my Mint 19.3 computer a week ago and just noticed they added the "Purge PPAs and 3rd party repositories" section after I did my upgrade. On my main work station (dual Xeon) I had a problem upgrading caused by this issue (dependency related). I was able to fix it myself, but it wasn't easy, and having had this step before hand would have been beneficial. So waiting a few weeks after they released these upgrade procedures might have been a wiser move on my part.

Thanks for this useful video Tom. 👍
I was wondering if I should go for LM20 but I'm now sure I should stay on 19.3 as of now.
My laptop runs on intel T4400 processor, 3, 320 GB RAM, HDD. So I fear it can't take load of new version. Also it's slow & it hangs suddenly.
The current issue of snaod & chromium confusion, I'm convinced that 19.3 is good. Even if I get new machine (please pray I get soon ;-) )I may stick to 19.3.
When I was on 18.3, the upgrade to 19 was painful & I had to opt for fresh install & reinstall all the apps through terminal, ppa etc. Hope this mintupgrade doesn't break.
    Thanks again. Good job.

Decent video but it’s also a factor if some might really want some of the features in Mint 20 like desktop scaling which many have had issues trying to add to Mint 19. In general I agree with you that major release updates are best done as clean installs if possible. If you have an SSD even consider secure erasing it first to restore its full performance as well. And consider imaging the system drive to an external drive before you change anything providing much more protection than just Timeshift. MacOS and Windows also have famously ugly problems with major updates. As to those who favor rolling releases you’re trading off having to do major a major update every few years, sorting a few things out, and having a stable system for 23+ months for potential new problems every week. Both have their downsides. Finally, if you can, hold off until Mint 20.1.

    I like Bibletime @SwitchedToLinux.
Poked at the upgrade JUST CAUSE and it caused me a headache!!
    1. I was impatient (2+hours to install the upgrade)
    2. Ran LM 20 for 2 minutes, imported my removed PPAs
*My favorite PPAs had Dependency Errors / LMMS had the update I was waiting for (v1.2.1 from v1.1.3)
*Some other Apps had repo updates
    3. Saw concerning glitch.... ran back to my 19.3 snapshot. (it FAILED)
    4. The downgrade reboot caused my iBluetooth Card to conk out!
    5. I GOT MY 19.3 INSTALL BACK AND RUNNING!!!
Come to think of it, the upgrade was buggy for me and I'll wait for 20.1 or just muster up and do a Clean Install!

    Hi there.
I had Linux Mint 20 installed about two weeks ago on my HP Laptop, an older i3 core with an upgrade to 16 gbit ddr3 ram and a brandnew ssd 500gb.
I posted this on several Linux Mint related Channels her on YT and Twitter, because i noticed an issue with the wlan-connetion.
I tested this on Ubuntu 20.04 as well and the outcome is pretty much the same, the wlan-connetion gets lost over and over again.
I updated the system to the latest kernel, updated the hardware component drivers, but the problem did not go away.
Finally i installed Linux Manjaro 20 on the same Laptop and the problem was gone.
I'm curious, if there is someone who shares the same experience.
If this is a general problem with Linux Mint 20 on Laptops, this would be a thing needs to be fixed soon.
As much as i like Manjaro, i would prefer to use Linux Mind again.

Just put the Timeshift backup on an external backup drive that has plenty of space, then you won't have to lose any of the internal hard drive/SSD space due to the two Timeshift backups.

Upgrading a Ubuntu-based system when you've got older hardware can be a worry, for example the last two years I've had to mess around with manually changing config files so the system would recognise a four year old NAS (the gods at Ubuntu don't like us peasants having external drives running Samba 1 .0).
What pushed me over the edge, I tried installing MX Linux 20 on a spare partition and it tried turning the main boor sector from a legacy MBR set up to a GPT system without having any room to set up a small Uefi partition. What a mess!!!
So my 'upgrade' this time round was a clean install of LM Debian edition over LM 19.3. Feels like a breath of fresh air....

One minor issue is that I am unable to set the search engine to google using an online methodology. I select the more search engines and then select google and use the "Click Here" and nothing happens and the google is not added into the search engine list. I am not sure if this is a Mint 20 issue though.

I tried to upgrade one of my computers from Mint 19 to Mint 20. It didn't go well. I posted to one of the Mint forums about it, and got flamed for not accepting that my hardware was broken. I installed Debian 10.4, and all is good. To tell the truth, I think I like Debian's version of Cinnamon a little better anyway, and Debian's definitely got a better community around it. Also, I wanted Hibernation; Mint makes this a battle, but Debian supported it out of the box. Oh, and Debian gives you a selection of screensaver hacks; Mint had just one choice, and it was a battle to install something else and get it to stay installed through months of patching.

The upgrade removed only Audacity from my system. At least I haven't noticed any other one programs missing. Anyway, it was no biggie, it only took about 10 seconds to reinstall, and all my settings were intact (especially the Winamp skin I have used since Winamp v.2, which was the most important thing!).

As a nerd with a UI design background I can say the upgrade path needs to a be a simple click .... not a string of commands... I think I will stay with 19.3 for a little while yet. Nothing drastic in 20 and losing 32bit support is the end of Linux on my older PC collection.

The icons in the notification area of Mint 20 look like something from an 8-bit Nintendo game. No idea why they changed them from 19.3. I use Chromium, Chrome, and Firefox. Chromium for email, social media, and banking, with Chrome and Firefox for my 2 UA-cam accounts. Chromium simply disappeared from my quicklaunch, and I could no longer find it in my /etc folder. I had download the deb file, but then had to manually download about 10 dependent packages to actually get Chromium installed, but now it crashes and quits at random intervals, about 4 times a day. I seriously consider downgrading back to 19.3 because 20 is not ready for release.

    • @BatEatsMoth
      @BatEatsMoth 4 роки тому

You could try switching some of your theme settings to Mint-X. I'm running 19.3 and if I switch everything to Mint-Y, I see those icons.
Chromium isn't available on 20 because it's now in the Snap repository, and Mint 20 doesn't use Snap. They're not going to change that, for ethical, practical and security reasons.

    • @gulskjegglive
      @gulskjegglive 4 роки тому

@@BatEatsMoth Thanks for the clarification. I completely understand the position on Snap. It seems some aspects of Linux have started to go wonky since that whole Ubuntu telemetry scandal from years ago. Problem is, I use Chromium for all email, banking, and online shopping, mostly due to it's "open source" status. I use Chrome for my primary UA-cam account, and Firefox for my secondary UA-cam account. I wish I knew of a browser that was as secure as Chromium, for lack of a better term, that I could use as an alternative. Then I could happily upgrade to Mint 20.

@Raphael Silverstone I never like tyring out an OS in a VM because it does not function as well as a real install. I play games (StarCraft, Tomb Raider games, shooters, The Witcher, platformgames, puzzle-games...), I think that it is clear that for gaming you best use a Debian based distribution (because Valve only supports Debian) and usually the most recent gaming-related software (mesa, kernel, firmware, compilers...) gives the best performance. I have a 5700 XT which still has somewhat immature drivers so I really need the latest software. Then Arch is a sensible choice but I could make Debian and by extension Ubuntu (and Mint/popOS...) work too, it would just take more effort to get the latest version of some software installed.
In regard to Arch updating frequently, that actually has decreased a lot in the last months, allegedly because the leadership has changed a bit. I have had a few problematic updates, fortunately those problems are almost always easy to solve. Just downgrading one program suffices most of the time. One time the problem was because of Arch itself (policy-kit).
