Before heading to TJ Aru, there's a spot passing by Aeropod and just facing Terminal 2 you can find a spot where you can airplane taking off from T2 (Runway 20) that is now plane frequently used to land and take off.
I stayed at The Aru Hotel every time I go to KK. I'll ask for a room with the view of the airport. I can then do my spotting from the comfort of the hotel room. Then, there's an area near the beach, right next to a Meteorological Office, along the perimeter road. Also at the roundabout near the Runway Cafe. There's a road than run along the fence, and some part of the fence is very low, at waist level.
There a location that is located at the end of the runway where planes land and the location is a supermarket called "Sunny Supermarket" and you can see the planes from close up as its landing and yes it flies over the building so you get a nice view from the bottom fuselage and landing gears And for my personal liking try to stay as far away from the tree as possible to get a more clearer view but if you need shade you can go under the tree but it will obstruct the plane landing though!
