My mom sewed my whole life, she made my clothes until 6th grade. When I was in high school, I’m home ec, I made clothes for my brand new baby brother. My sister quilts. I’ve been around sewing my whole life but I started cross stitching when I was 19, have loved it ever since. Watching all the quilting in the floss tubes has me wanting to quilt something. I’ll be watching your progress on the sewing machine!!
Love all the stitching projects and congrats on the big finish! Beautiful!!
Have a great week! Happy stitching!!

Hello from NC Nicole, so nice to “visit” with you and Ginger today. Your pieces are just lovely. My first quilt class sewing machine was a Janome, still love that machine, use it when I need to zig zag around my cross stitch fabric. For my stay at home machine, (too heavy to take to class) I have a Juki, love that machine too. I also bought Lori Holt’s Flea Market Flowers, love the pattern. Thank you for all you do to keep us inspired.

Lovely video...I think you have inherited your mother’s sewing skills...knitting, stitching sampler reproductions are very important skills that have escaped many people...Vonna Phiffer has a video on buying the best sewing machines and how to get started...she says that the sewing machine’s from Jo Ann and Wal Mart can’t be repaired...plastic gears...great purchase of the EBay pattern...love the DMC threads...wishing you Joy and happy stitching ❤️

Lovely video Nicole. Mary Barres is a beauty. Loved seeing the quilt your mom made. I will love to watch your own quilting journey.
I’ve had a few different sewing machines over the years. My favourite is the Pfaff that I have now. It has the walking foot built right into it so no need to keep changing machine feet.
I seem to be all into Lori Holt as well right now and really like the look of the Flea Market Flowers.
I think I am going to have to order it 😍
    Happy crafting, Margaret

Your finished piece is beautiful! I just finished Lori Holts Flea Market Flowers quilt, my first ever full sized quilt! I was so happy to see that she came out with the cross stitch pattern to match and I have it all kitted and ready to stitch! Have a fabulous week, happy stitching!

Nicole, Enjoyed seeing what your stitching. All your WIPs are great projects. I am excited to see how you make progress on them. Don’t push yourself on Consider the Lilies. Work on it as much as “you” want. Our cross stitch should be enjoyed. Good luck on your search for a sewing machine. I am sure you will find a good one. 🥰

Loved Quaker Diamonds! I have actually stitched it twice, once for my husband and once for a friend that was turning 60. It is a fun stitch for sure. Love your projects that you have shown, you are enabler for sure!

Beautiful stitching and your quilt is absolutely gorgeous. For my 60th birthday last year, I got a sewing machine (Janome), very basic for I can always upgrade later. My friend was and will eventually teach me to make a quilt. My hope is to make one for our grandchildren. My friend gave me some advice on sewing machines plus where I got the sewing machine they were extremely helpful. It will be fun and something to look forward to. Lovely shawl, I just got an email about the new Shawl Society from Helen Stewart so those are always beautiful. Her Sock Society has been wonderful. Thanks for the reminder on the ducks.

Hey Nicole! Your Consider the Lilies is so beautiful. No rush to finish it in April; just enjoy every stitch! I’m getting the itch to learn to quilt too... All my kids will be old enough this Fall to be in school full-time so I’m thinking it would be fun to learn during all my free time.

Your Flosstube was recommended by Brenda and Laura. I've watched the last few and so glad I did. Your work is beeeeautiful ❣️🧵 I've been a quilter for years and cross stitched on and off through the years. I hope you find the perfect sewing machine! Until next time...🧵🧵

Beautiful finish on Mary Barres! I've been bitten by the Lori Holt bug too... I have one of her quilt kits and I'm addicted to her bright happy colors. I think you just tipped me over the edge for the Flea Market Flower stitch along! It's so bright and cheerful. I'm off to Amazon to get some tags...Thanks for another great video - Happy stitching!

New viewer here! I'm relatively new to all kinds of needlework type things, but I have some experience with sewing machines. I inherited mine from my grandma after she passed, and it's an absolute WORKHORSE. It's a Singer from like, 1975 and I hope I never have to replace it. I've come across similar models in thrift stores for like $25- highly recommend that route! Its totally mechanical and easy to maintain, and it's basically bombproof.

I always enjoy your Flosstube videos! I do a lot of quilting, too, so am excited for you to get into that. A good vintage Singer Featherweight is great for piecing. I have several machines, and the one I like best is my Juki TL- 2010q. It only does straight line stitching, but it is a solidly built workhorse. Lisa Bongean at Primitive Gatherings has some UA-cam videos and blog entries about these machines if you want to see more.

The piece you finished is gorgeous! I envy your organization skills (and your eyes, 40 count), but if I had a spreadsheet of everything in process, I'm thinking I would be overwhelmed and probably not do any of them. Also, the shawl you're knitting, wow. Thanks for sharing!

Mary Barres is fabulous! Love your beautiful finish! Makes me want to stitch all those pretty pinks 😍 Consider the Lilies is looking very pretty. Maybe not an April finish but with your speedy needle probably Mother’s Day. Love Ragamuffin 2. Another aspirational stitch. I have all the For the Birds charts and flosses. I keep going back and forth between stitching it all on one or separately. I’m sure watching yours will help me decide. Lucky you scoring the Goode Huswife June Morning chart! So darling! Great stuff as always. Thanks for sharing! xo, Tricia

Welcome to the slippery slope of quilting...(I.e., yet another crafting obsession)! I too love cross stitch, knitting and quilting (and rug hooking, and wool embroidery, and needle punch, and painting, and, and, and!!!. Also made me laugh that you found Lori Holt - her things are too cute and cheery to possibly resist! Kristie (@crosshatchquilts) explained the seeming contradiction of loving prim things and samplers and also bright, cheery feed sack type colors with one word...”History”! Both styles tell a story, and therein lies the tale. 😀

Mary is BEAUTIFUL! Congrats on finishing her...and as always I want to stitch all the things you showed myself. Lol! Quilt making is fun...I made my first few quilts on a fairly basic Singer. Several years later I bought a Bernina that was packaged for quilters...but it has a lot of stitches and attachments that I never use.

Your samplers are gorgeous, and I like the Friendship Sampler that you have kitted up in Lori Holt's colors. I am going to participate in the Flea Market Flowers SAL. I stitch from the upper right, and the SAL starts in the upper left. So I am going to stitch the border before the SAL starts, then stitch each section as it comes up in the SAL. I don't know if I can wait that long either! Thanks, Nicole.

Hi Nichole. Your stitching is beautiful. If you watch fat quarter shop tutorials that she does every Friday (it is a a sew along called Sewcialites she does a block a week and it’s totally free but it teaches quilting skills and is very fun but why I’m telling you this is the machine that she uses is amazing. It is a Juki 2010Q and it is not a computerized machine it only does straight stitches. So of course I bought one and I have 5 other nice machines. Fancy ones that do everything but the only one I use nor is my Juki. They even sell it on Amazon. She had had hundreds of her followers buy this machine ... I just thought I would share. Happy stitches

Vonna Pfeiffer - The Twisted Stitcher has a video called the Sewing series that is informational about how to chose the right sewing machine for your needs. Hopefully that will help you with getting a sewing machine. I agree that quilts are beautiful. Your stitching is amazing as usual and your knitting is impressive. I love the quilt your mother made by hand. Gorgeous!!! I really enjoyed your SamBrie interview. Thanks.

Your Mary Barres is gorgeous! Another beautiful finish, Nicole. ❤️ I am also enjoying Lori Holt’s videos and am wanting to stitch Flea Market Flowers. It’s so pretty with the bright spring/summer colors. Her Flea Market fabric line is really pretty too. The hardest part about being a quilter and cross stitcher is deciding where to spend your money and your time! And then you also knit! But quilts are such a treasure and it’s a fun hobby.

I've been quilting and cross stitching for many many years. I have had several sewing machines over that time. If I'm being honest.....more then several. So here's my 2 cents: Buy a used machine. One from the 70's or 80's. The old Kenmore machines are work horses and have just the right amount of stitches without being overwhelming. Steer away from computerized machines. You don't need that, at least not right now while starting out. Currently I have a Juki TL 2200 mini. You can get the older models (TL98) on ebay for less then $500. The Kenmores are usually less then $200. The Juki TL series machines are straight stitch only and are perfect for piecing and quilting quilts. I also have a Bernina 440. It has all the bells and whistles. I love that machine, but since I bought my Juki early last year I only use my Bernina for finishing the edges of my cross stitch fabric with a zigzag stitch. But Berninas are always a good choice, but they are expensive, even the used ones. I hope this helps a little. You will LOVE quilting!

I am thinking of switching my DMC to thread drops as well. I prefer them in my kitted projects but I'm not sure about dust and pet hair since I do have cats and dogs. I keep my overdyed floss on rings in a storage container so maybe I could do that for my DMC. I cant wait to do the new Lori Holt pattern as well! My advice for whatever sewing machine you purchase is to sit down with your manual and read the details. Also with tension...before you mess with your tension try TNT. Thread....rethread your top and bobbin and see if that works. If not, try N...needle. your needle may have a defect or minuscule damage that is affecting tension. If neither of those work...adjust your tension which is the T. Once you set up your machine and get the tension to the normal range...it really doesnt need to be messed with if you are only using quilting cottons. 90% of the time it is the thread for me. Either it just needs to be rethreaded or my machine doesn't work well with a certain brand (learned quickly that Walmart thread is a no no for mine). I invested in spools of aurifil in a cream and gray. It costs more but last longer and I have less breaking. Also, if your machine doesn't have a sideways thread holder, buy a thread stand because spools that have the criss cross winding need to come off the spool a certain way. WOW this is a long comment. LOL sorry I'm just excited to share

I quilt as well. As far as machines, one of my favorites is a vintage singer 1942- 201. I paid 7$ for it at an estate sale and its fantastic. I also like my 1938 singer featherweight ( far more expensive because they are collectible). I do have a janome computerized machine which I have had for 28 years. I would say don’t over look a vintage machine if you just want to do quilt piecing. Quilting is another rabbit hole, you can get lost collecting in fabrics. Good luck

You might like sewing a quilt by hand or using paper pieces. I bought Log Cabin papers from Sew Emma ..there are 2 sizes. Super easy to sew on the paper foundations. Rulers and I don't get along all that well. I like the paper foundations, it's like quilting for dummies! 😊❤

If you are interested, Vonna did a video recently reviewing sewing machines and the things to look for when purchasing one such as machines that are plastic parts versus one with metal parts, just a thought. I can’t wait to see you make some quilts. I could totally see you doing this and if you follow Lori Holt, she has really great and easy quilt alongs and her applique technique is super easy. WIth you living in the South, I think you still can find Featherweights. Those machines are just work horses and do a beautiful stitch and once things open up , quilt show are a really good place to look at quilts and also to look for machines. But you can find them used also. So many great choices for machines. But with you doing x-stitch you will also do well with applique! I am a quilter and predominately do needle turn applique and I heavily embellish most of my quilts. Love your projects and cannot wait to see your Prim Flea Market stitch.

I bought a Singer Heavy Duty one. I spent around $200. I love it and it’s great through lots of fabric layers.

I started using the key tags on my bags, but they were difficult for me to attach. So I decided to use the lightbulb stitch markers to attach them. Thank you for recommending the bags, etc.

Love your videos, you show beautiful stitches and knitting. When you stitch the Loose feathers series on one piece of linen will you be stitching a border between each pattern block? I have seen photos of other stitchers who put a border between each pattern so I haven’t decided if I will do the same. Still waiting for the linen to arrive from 123 Stitch. I would like to start it with Brenda and Laura’s Blackbird Designs weekend.

Hey Nicole! The quilting bug has bitten me too! There are several Flosstubers who are quilters too so I plan to ask them for help. Also, @fatquartershop has great quilt video tutorials. 😍

M:y recommendation for a great sewing machine is one of the old Singer Featherweight machines. If you can find someone in your area who sells and maintains them, that would be a reasonable route to go for a straight sewing no frills machine.

    Hi Nicole,
Thx for sharing your gorgeous projects. I have a question, why do you keep some of your silks in little plastic bags? I am starting Ann Roberts with silks (for the first time) so I would like to know if it is better for the silks to keep them in plastic bags? Have fun with al your pretty projects!!

I love what you do! Can you tell me again what the name of that first sampler was that you showed. Can I suggest a bernina sewing machine. I have two and I love them. They have a very basic one and you would probably want a blanket stitch on it if you are going to use it for putting things together. Just a suggestion.
