In July '79 I was in the Air Force and did a 30 day TDY to Nellis AFB and worked out of an aircraft hangar which had local Las Vegas radio pumping into the work area. This song played at least twice an hour all day and night. Everyone knew every line and instrument break just from the sheer repetition. We never got tired of it and even today 45 years later, it rocks!
Weird Al Yankovic began his storied career by parodying this song. His version is called "My Bologna". The lead instrument is his accordion. It's just as whacked and wonderful as you think it is.
I was lucky enough to get to meet them in person when they played at our E-club at Kaneohe marine corp air station (KMCAS) Hawaii 2 mo. after they recorded this song 4/79 they even gave me a signed hat with the wings on it.
A truly fun song, and one of the best Guitar solos of the era, or any era. As for the "titular" Sharona, she was a 17ish young lady, and the obsession of Lead Singer and Guitarist Doug Fieger (RIP), and his real life muse. We are all so happy she was, because we still have this song. I bought the album when it was new, and I still have it on my shelf.
It's crazy, I was in my 20's when this song came out. And it was so catchy that I never really listened to the words closely so all I heard was "My Sharona"! I played guitar then so I ignored lyrics to a lot of songs. Also, lyrics weren't as accessible back then as they are now. You basically had to buy the album to get the full lyrics to songs. Now I hear it and I'm like what??!! I totally agree with you though. If you get the chance, watch the music video. No, it isn't creepy or anything. It just shows the band jamming out. I WANT MY MTV!!
This song was super huge for a time. I remember one of the local rock radio stations played it non-stop for 24 hours as part of some promotion or another. The second guitar solo still rocks super hard. Reminds me of Cheap Trick, Blondie, Pat Benatar, The Police, Joe Jackson, The Romantics ... From what I understand now, Sharona was a woman, his girlfriend, a teenager only in spirit.
That was a one hot wonder that got crazy radio play with that one song. Decades of airtime. One hot wonders are really special though. A gem basically. Another one-hit-wonder you should try is...Drivers Seat by Sniffin the Tears. The back up vocals actually steal the show and made it a hit. That's a rare achievement.
In the 70's, it was common for girls 12 to 18 to date guys in their 20's... we saw it all the time. Heck, these guys would come to our High School and pick these girls up in the parking lot during school. I can't imagine that things have changed all that much in today's world.
A very talented band if not the best role models ( see also Led Zeppelin, Jerry Lee Lewis... on and on). They were tight and had some crazy chops. The whole debut album is solid. Oh Tara and The Monkey and Me are also favourites of mine off that first album. Thanks for the reaction.
Don't take this the wrong way at all, but when i was growing up during all this great music, my African American friends would never listen to this stuff because it was in NO way cool to them. But i feel like it was what they were told, and that they missed out on a lot of great music. It definitely was cooler for us white folks to love rock, but we would also appreciate soul , r &b etc.... Glad you are getting to see all the good music a lot of people missed. Hope you took this in the way it was intended. love your channel
Such a great song and at the time, teenage girls were not taboo, prior generations were married very young. But I agree with you and it’s a good thing that culture has become more aware. The age 18 today is nowhere near the maturity 18 was decades ago for many comprehensive reasons ✌🏽
one the major problem why some songs don't age well is that some guys write songs when they're in their teens or place themselves in a role of a teen when they write them. that why most songs that feature a girl'a age on the title or in the lyrics tend to create issues today. but keep this in mind, this was not a big deal back in the 50's 60's 70's and in the 80's. when some songwriters mention the girl's age in the song or song title. I'm not disagree with you entirely but this was normal back then. some teenage guys do tend to go for the younger girls 1 or 2 year below their age while some girls do the exact opposite. like I mention before it wasn't big deal in the past.
Hi I'm glad you enjoyed the song. The song is about Sharon, his girlfriend at the time. She was the lead singers girl. I do believe she was 17 when they met and he in his early 20s. Yes it still wrong but because it's a personal song about his feelings for her, he gets a pass. She liked the song then and even now. She was on the cover of the single.. she sells real state here in los angeles and has billboards with her name Sharon's and pic on them. OK keep reacting
Still a great song after all these years! Being a guitarist myself, I have to give a shout out to the lead guitar solo work by Berton Averre! It still gives me goosebumps! However, I agree with your take on this song as far as a much older man having a thing for a significantly younger girl. I read he was 25 and she was 17, it’s just not right! ✌️
If you are from Michigan this band has a different slant as Doug Fieger (RIP) is the brother of Jeffrey Fieger who is a very famous defense lawyer and a Governor candidate in Michgan. Great comment about the lyrics - it was inappropriate back then and it is now. No excuse due to "it was back then" BS. (not that you did that) Great song, but it is very dirty.

Sweet!
I am so glad you listened to the version that has the long guitar solo. That is a great solo. 👍💪
Now for some Talking Heads..."Take Me to the River" comes to mind...
Man, this song brings back a lot of memories... Thank you.

And I do know it's simply because I am a weirdo but still to this day I hum My Bologna while making a sandwich ...lol
And don’t forget Cheech singing “My Scrotum”
I was lucky enough to get to meet them in person when they played at our E-club at Kaneohe marine corp air station (KMCAS) Hawaii 2 mo. after they recorded this song 4/79 they even gave me a signed hat with the wings on it.
Based on a true story, singer and rhythm guitarist Doug Fieger was 25, Sharona was 17, they eventually dated for four years....
This was a song that transitioned us from disco to the 80’s rock scene. It was huge.

Great dance tune back in the day.

Their biggest hit
Well said...
Fun song, classic of the era….underrated guitar solo for sure

My jam!

6th grade. I was at my cousin's house visiting during the summer this was released. That beat changed me!!!!
Forgot about this song.
I get you….😊
Yes good point! I never really captured how inappropriate these lyrics were, thank you for pointing that out! Music great...lyrics not so much!

You should listen to Winger's "Seventeen." That one is pretty controversial.
The Knack also did a great mid tempo song called "Can't Put A Price On Love"
Good girls don’t … the dirty version 👍
muh-muh-muh--my bologna
My HS freshman year!
Well, before we go on a crusade, most of the songs like this are written from the pov of a teenage male. (This one, I'm not sure, lol)
I hope you did the long version!
How was that baby boy?!

SORRY SHARONA IS HER NAME

@JMBOYTV You probably shouldn’t react to “She’s Only 17” by Winger then… 😂😂😂
I love this song so much that I went and bought the album and then I was so disappointed.
JMBOY...What u say about Led Zeppelin?
Check out my reaction to “sick again” by LZ
Suspicious lyrics🤫.
My Scrotum
good music, tacky lyrics
ewww lyrics are sketchy
Wow. This came out 45 yrs ago, JM, and I thank you for pointing out the lyrics to me. I agree with you 100%. It's kinda creepy
