Thank you for this! I was torn between these two bags for the past 2 weeks and now you've helped me make my decision!

Previous long-time Shimoda owner and Compagnon owner agrees all of your points, one addition to Shimoda, it can't fit 16" Macbook pro well even the newest version bags.

Such a useful video. I got this bag not for camera stuff at but to carry around my card game eg yugioh and pokemon stuff since i need something that had potential to be sectioned off. Got the Compagnon Element 30L and i am loving the bag it doesnt feel super heavy and really nice feel on the back. I carry around so many cars that my backpack get very heavy. The straps on this feel like a pillow personally. the quality is also top notch. I had been looking for backpack that fit so many of wants for ages but could never find one that met everything i want.
great video and very informative with no fluff.

Thanks! I'm glad you found the video helpful. It’s cool to see that it has other purpose than camera gear :)

Had the shimoda x30 for years and it just sucks. I really felt into the amateur hipster trap and bought an over priced bag. I ONLY realised that recently once I tried my girlfriend’s trekking bag, where the weight actually goes to the hips instead of the shoulders. The lack of structure of the shimoda makes you carry all the load on the shoulders. It’s also pretty sweaty as there is no distance between the back of the bag and your back. I really wonder what pro adventure photographers use! But certainly not the shimoda xwhatever.

I don’t think the Shimoda sucks, it definitely did the job for me even while trekking. That said, I also have Ospreys backpack for trekking and they are way more comfortable as they really take the weight off your shoulders like you mentioned. Maybe they need to reverse engineer those ospreys backpack haha
