Impressive. I'm a Japanese-Japanese dad raising kids in the US in the deep south, trying to have kids learn Japanese but your kids speaking far better (granted ours are 6 and younger). I love the positive vibes y'all cast out. Thanks for inspiration.
Hi! I'm hafu and managed to stay bilingual in both languages and what helped was having one parent speak to me exclusively in Japanese and the other in English. Knowing both languages securely is one of the biggest skills my parents gave me and I'm so grateful. I've seen many other hafu children forget one language overtime and I find it really sad since I feel like knowing the language is what allowed to me stay truly connected to people from both countries.
Hey, so i am fluent in Portuguese and Spanish despite being born in and growing up in the US. The reason for that is: my mom is native spanish speaking and my dad is native portuguese speaking. as i was growing up, they would only talk to me in their native language and would only listen to what i had to say if i responded in said language, even though they had already learned how to speak english. it was frustrating .. but i'm glad they did it.. cuz i'm fluent in 3 languages and i can say i grew up speaking all three
Please speak to them in Japanese as much as possible … they will learn English because everyone else speaks it … but I have so many friends who have parents that speak one language and they can barely understand or speak it and the parents are In the same boat with English … it just feels like a waste of a culture, education, and tradition. As an adult learning languages I would also appreciate having learned more as a child.
You say that this family is a model family for foreigners living in Japan but you must consider that there are a lot of foreigners that moved to Japan already when they reached the adult age! These kids were either raised there or born there (idk since this is the first video I’m seeing from them) so it is easier for them to learn the language. You are right that it is nice when foreigners can speak Japanese but you can’t expect that from all of them!!
As someone living with depression, I'm honestly so baffled and impressed by how positive and lively you people are. So many people talk about how hard it is to become part of Asian countries' society and culture, and while I know you probably also face your challenges too, it seems you're just kind of gliding through it and taking it with the exact right attitude. You're like "how it SHOULD be". But you actually ARE. I can honestly say you are guarding your children's mental health very well in this world somehow. Where you get it from, I have no clue, but it's impressive. I don't know what it's like off screen, but I still think you're doing a lot better than most people. So yeah kudos to that.
Thank you so much. It can be a real challenge to stay positive, but guarding our priorities has been key for us. We prioritize our relationship with God through Jesus Christ (we are Christians so that plays a key part in how we live and what you see) and our relationships with others (our family, our community, our church, etc). While we try to be the same onscreen as we are offscreen, but now that everyone has got so used to having a camera around that I think we get their natural reactions (like Becca's reaction at the end of the video). I pray God's blessing on you. Depression is not a fun battle to fight, but it's worth fighting! Thanks for commenting.
Japanese is easy to learn and difficult to improve, especially the honorific system, while Chinese characters are much easier, especially if you have learned Chinese, you will know how simple a language is. Overall, the Japanese language world is well-deserved among the most difficult languages.
Being able to speak/communicate in another language is an amazing gift. I have yet to reach the level where I can hold a conversation in another language other than English (my native language). Japanese is on the list of languages that I want to learn, currently, I'm using Drops for Japanese but I'll have to search for additional resources to help with learning the language.
I love these Japanese series!!!! Your kids’ Japanese isn’t like “they can speak” , they are super fluent! And it’s so cool seeing mama-chan and you improving a lot:)
I love these kinds of videos! The bilingual skills of the children are just amazing. It's a pleasure listening to them talk Japanese. But the parents' Japanese is great too! Absolutely admire how you are putting the effort to learn the language - I've been learning Japanese too, but it's been quite difficult for me since I don't always find the time for it while having a full-time job. Your family seems to effortlessly embrace and live in two cultures and languages, and this absolutely is something to celebrate!
wow what a hidden gem of a channel. I lived and worked in Japan for 2 years right after University, worked at a JHS - your daughters reminded me of all the cleaning we used to do at the school, also have to agree, lunch was the best, especially if it was curry day.
I’m from the UK but I would of loved my parents to of moved over to Japan with me and my brother when we were that age and been raised bilingual! I definitely believe life is about stepping outside your comfort zone and taken on new challenges which can be exciting and scary at the same time! Massive respect! 👍🏻
Well said! Even if it didn't happen when you were younger (it didn't for me either), it's never too late to step out of your comfort zone and do something bigger!
Your kids are amazing!!! It must be tough on them growing up in Japan at a young age… your kids seems to have overcome these hurdle…and doing very well… I only have respect…
Good evening Ruetter family!! I am sorry that I missed your live premiere tonight. Sadly my brain was preoccupied by getting our family prepared for our flight back to the states tomorrow. We will definitely miss living here though watching your videos will bring us much joy as well as praying for us to return as tourists. Nate and Ruth thank you for sharing your family with us and your experiences while living here. Blessings to you all and may God's favor be upon you, your family and your mission with Paz church.
its really great you and your wife speak japanese and speak it with kids at home! I think a lot of times when westerners (or anyone migrating to a different country) but especially when it is a mainly homogenous country like japan that has a very different culture, it can be hard for young kids to find an understanding and assimilate to the differences of their home life and school. But by bringing Japanese into the house, it alows them to feel more comfortable and not have to worry about living almost two seperate worlds. Ive heard stories of families from e the US to Japan who have very strict no japanese and only english rules in their house, but that could be hard especially for young kids who see their friends at school talking one way and their family completely different. Its important to have a balance which its great you have
Compared to the video a year ago, the kids still speak japanese very well, and the japanese for parents has improved significantly. You all study very hard!👍
As a Korean living in America, I wish I took more care to retaining my native language. While I was 4 or 5, I only knew Korean while I started in America. But now I am in college, I know only English (while studying Japanese). It's so helpful living in another country that is different from your native speaking one. I hope your kids retain both English and 日本語!
I just got to the first Japanese video in the playlist right before this was posted! You can really see how everyone has grown 💖 and of course everyone sounds great! It was nice seeing the friends at Paz join in too
Wow, being perfectly honest with you guys this is really impressive!! Hard work pays off!! You should be proud of your awesome kids and yourself!! Thx for sharing the great vid with us, god bless you all.

書き言葉になると国語の点数や能力差が歴然と出るが、話し言葉はおまえみたいなチュウソツでもなんとか通じるレベルになるくらい簡単なのが日本語w
