  • The portrait film "Shedding Light" provides insights into the working and living environment of the artist Sheela Gowda (*1957), who lives in Bengaluru, India, and her work, which has spanned more than 30 years. Why does she use cow dung as artistic material, what does human hair mean in her art? How does she think about working conditions and production mechanisms and what connection between the local and the global is established through her works?
"Shedding Light" was created as part of the exhibition "Sheela Gowda. It. Matters" at the Lenbachhaus. Filmmakers Friedrich Rackwitz and Stephan Vorbrugg visited the artist in her studio in Bengaluru and watched her and the curator Eva Huttenlauch on site in India and during the creation of the exhibition at Lenbachhaus. Sheela Gowda opens up the world of thought behind her works and tells stories humorously.
International exhibition organizers such as Ute Meta Bauer, Hans Ulrich Obrist as well as the curator of the exhibition Eva Huttenlauch and the art critic Zehra Jumabhoy talk about deeper meanings of the artworks and their socio-political dimensions. The 30-minute film builds closeness and familiarity with Sheela Gowda, opening up the meaning of her works to the viewers.
