Hi! I owned an ATARI 1200XL brand new in 1983. The Atari 1200XL would only show the fancy color ATARI logo if you powered on the computer with no cartridge and no disk drive connected or no disk in the drive. At that point you could press HELP and go into the self tests. If you have any questions about the 1200XL I'll be happy to help out.
Great! Glad you enjoyed it. It's so pristine and I don't want to use it because it will get the used look. Good news is I have another 1200XL that is not mint that I can beat on. I will install a U1MB in the used one very soon. Do you have many Atari8's? Cheers!
@@gamedoutgamer I dont have a 1200XL, but i do have 2 800XL and another 2 Atari 130XE computers. All standard 64/128K ram. I bought the SIDE2 cartridge from Lotharek (Poland). A great hardware add-on that can also be used on your 1200XL. You can run many games and the SIDE2 also has Spartados inside. makes a CompactFlash card into a harddrive for the Atari 8bit.
@@RichardCyberPunk Awesome. Nice collection. Yes the SIDE2 is great! I highly recommend you consider the AVG Cart. It is fantastic at emulating cartridges and other functions and it uses SD cards which are much easier to get. It can fully emulate a SIDE2 as well. User 'tmp' on Atariage forums makes and sells them and they are not costly at all. It's probably the best multicart for A8's right now.
Man old habits die hard.. You got those disks close to the monitor and my heart leapt into my throat until I remembered it's not a CRT like it would have been back in the day... I remember frying a few floppies that way.
This machine is awesome. When I was a kid in the late 80s I had a NES and a friend had a C64. One day at his house, he dug out a weird old Atari (no disk drive). It had some really primitive Pinball type game, not sure if there was anything else. We played around with it for a couple days, lost interest and went back to his C64. I still remember the model number on it and the design - it was a 1200XL. I was confused by the whole thing, not knowing such machines existed, and thought it must have preceded the 2600. It seemed so ancient and obsolete. Neither of us had any idea how good it actually was because the only game we found with it was not showing what it could do. To this day that's the only A8 I've ever seen or touched with my own hands. I had no idea it was anything special at the time. In the 80s my family had an Apple II. I didn't know anything about the other computers. In retrospect I know I would have *loved* an A8, a computer that was actually built for games and has a cart slot on it. The graphics and sound would have been more inspiring to program also. Apples are so boring. The A8 is the computer I should have had as a kid. Whenever I look at A8's online, I keep thinking I really want to get one, even today. I'm starting to get obsessed lol.
I my self grew up with an Atari 800XL. When you were bored playing all those games, you could draw, animate and create effects, compose music and write programs (in Basic). Hundreds of Colors, 4 sound channels and a Basic language where you can write a player/missile routine under 10 minutes. You are right. A8s were the best computer choice for kids....if games was not the only thing in mind.
Hey! Enjoyed your comment!! Sorry you didn't get to try more games on his 1200XL. Yes only one game is not enough. Maybe you played David's Midnight Magic? ua-cam.com/video/GDkcE61BDJI/v-deo.html If you get an A8, watch my video one how to use them here ua-cam.com/video/mPQzDnaAs0g/v-deo.html Get an XL or XE is my recommendation. They will run more games/apps and are easier to work with. The 400/800's are fragile in shipping (you have been warned). Have you tried emulating? I appreciate your interest in them! Keep in touch. Let me know if you get one!
Another gem! Really nice 1200XL. Back in the day I remember feeling a little bad that I just got an 800XL when the 1200XL came out. Seeing it on display in the store window it was like looking at shiny candy... I wanted it but the cost was high. And then a friend of mine told me about the incompatibilities and that dulled my interest. Then it disappeared from the market shortly thereafter. I figured it was a failed experiment from Atari.
Thank you!! Yes it's in too good of condition for me to want to use because I don't want to degrade its pristine appearance. Just think, Ronald Reagan was president when it was made! hahah. It's not too difficult to install an 800's OS ROM to make it %100 compatible and Atari should have offered that as a cheap service in order to save face. It's the most premium of the whole line or at least on par with the 800 and that's why it's very collectable for A8ers. Atari was in the midst of receiving very, very bad news (around xmas '82) when production was starting and maybe that impacted the final stages of development (fixing bugs, etc). Thankfully the 800XL was (for the most part) a big step in the right direction for the line being so much cheaper and competitive and having most of the OS bugs fixed. The 1200XL is the machine to collect. It doesn't suffer from drastic cost cutting. If the 800XL had been out in quantity before xmas 83 then Atari would still have been competitive and held onto much more market share. :( That said, the platform is still getting new games and hardware! It's not dead.
I bought one new to replace my 800 that I purchased end of '79. Great keyboard, but it had compatibility issues and monitor issues, so I sold it and continued to use m y 800.
That's great Mike!! Yes especially back then the compatibility issues were a real issue. What did you use it for? Nowadays the 1200XL is very desirable because the compatibility issues are very fixable, has excellent build quality, the aesthetics are great and along with it's very nice keyboard. It's a more unique machine compared to all other A8's but the 800 is also really nice and it's style is great. I remember seeing the 400+800 in a small computer shop when they were brand new in 1980 but we didn't get one until '84 - an 800XL with a 1050 then later added an Indus GT. Then in '85 I got my own 130XE with a USD 1050.
Still many old Atari's are sold with the styrofoam which is a nice bonus. People would keep the original packaging and store the computer in it which is the best way. Thank you Dagarvs!
She’s gorgeous for sure. The true beast of the line is the 800. The 1200xl is the beauty. Had the 800xl here. Very fond memories. Agreed about emulation. But there’s something special about having and using the real thing.
Hi! Congrats on your find! If it's in really great condition then it's worth about $200. If it's unopened and still sealed it's worth more. Is it yellowed? Was it stored in a hot attic? If it's yellowed and heavily used it's worth about $100. Rough estimates here. Please send me photos at gamedoutgamer@gmail.com I might be interested.
The 1200XL has a monitor jack in the back that outputs composite. This monitor has composite and s-video inputs. It's a 2007FPb. I do NOT recommend Lotharek's video cable.
Yes from a software perspective that's true. The 1200XL has better build quality and keyboard typing experience. About %20 of 800XL's have a great Alps keyboard which is amazing too. The 1200XL OS bugs are easily fixed nowadays. Thanks!
@@gamedoutgamerseconded. HW build quality was the best. I do prefer the 130xe look, but build quality was reduced as Atari wanted to sell off remaining stock as 16/32-bit was coming into the scene. Oh the 1200xl can be modified for s-video output and restoring the 5v SIO line very easily. Atari nixed thr 5v line because they didn't want users to overload the bus with more devices than what the power unit could put out. Atari forgot that some devices did need it and the 5v was returned for the 600/800xl and newer...
I love the sound of utter joy in your voice as you unbox that 1200XL. Of course, few computers are quite as worthy of such adoration ;)

I just purchased a non working 1200xl off of eBay , opened it up and found the keyboard connector had come loose, now it works great.

The 1200xl is one of the best looking 8bit computers.
There is a much better version of Frogger (one that plays all the music from the arcade) on disk by Sierra Online I believe if you can find it.
I'll check it out. Thanks for letting me know!
Very nice in good hands.
How you connect Atari to an dell lcd ?

For the Atari 8bit? I'm not sure. Try asking at the AtariAge forums atariage.com/forums/forum/12-atari-8-bit-computers/
The 800XL was a better computer since this model had many bugs.

OS 11 fixes the bugs :) the 1200xl came out with 10, and the field manual states what conditions are needed for the v11 chip swap
