They FLY. The defence is to put the bridge into lava. "Yep, this will protect us from anything. There is no such thing as flying enemies. Oh, what's that floating towards us? *Oh no* "
I have to say, there's *something* about the Bionicle movie that just does it for me. For some reason, I'm always impressed by the dialogue. Cheesy or not, it feels so *right* in a way that I just can't put down in words.
I'm currently watching it for the first time in like 20 years and honestly you're so right. I'm remembering the delivery on a lot of the scenes and I love it. I love voice lines from Tahu, Gali, and Onua specifically!
My view is that it's passable for a straight to VHS/DVD film but at the same time, for me at least, part of what made Bionicle work for me was the neutral designs of the characters; The Toa Mata and to some degree the Toa Nuva never really looked heroic and could've just as easily been the villians, but in the film the way they emote instantly informs you that they're the good guys. Same goes for the Matoran and the Turaga. Also, a lot of the promotional Bionicle stuff as well as various moments in the Mata Nui Online Game had a way of letting your imagination run wild whilst making sure not to tell you too much too quickly. One of my favourite moments which I also consider a brilliant example of visual interactive storytelling is finding the telescope in the Mata Nui Online Game before anyone tells you what it does; not only did the game designers give you everything you need to figure out what the telescope does but they also added in this beautiful yet haunting ambient music that plays when you approach it. Admittedly I need to give this film another watch as I've forgotten a lot of the dialogue but from what I remember from the other times I watched it I thought it was alright; nothing to write home about but nothing offensively bad either. Given that it was trying to play towards more mainstream audiences without offending the diehard fans I think it turned out alright.

I don’t know if I mentioned this here before but I love the attention to detail that I never noticed as a kid: the Mask growing dim anytime someone that’s not Takua holding or touching it, after Gali uses her healing water, you can see her color going pale, and then when she’s replenishing her water supply it become vibrant again. And that Jaller was literally scared to death. I’m trying to think of others but nothing is jumping out at me. Edit: three years later and I’m realizing the Mask of Light literally looks like a fancier, monochromatic version of Takua’s mask 😂
how about that all the writing in the movie is actually in the matoran alphabet and almost all of it actually says what its supposed to. such as the onu koro highway

Back in the old days when Netflix was only mail-in DVD services, I rented this and I loved it so much that when my mom put it back in the mailbox to ship back, I snuck and took the disc out again to watch it. She was not happy.
Coming back to this movie after spending almost 20 years(!!!) in my memory. I used to watch this movie almost every day - back when I was nearly blind to the concept of media production - because I was such a huge fan of bionicle. Now I appreciate this movie for what it really is. I can look past the franchise and see a straight-forward and rock-solid script, killer CG animation for a children's movie from 2003(!!!), genuine and skillful voice acting that brings life and individuality into each character's admittedly-cliche archetypes, and a totally solid score that is high quality and compliments the atmosphere perfectly. But not only is the quality of the multimedia suite really high, as others have stated the lore is on-point. The terminology and story doesn't cut so much of a break towards the uninitiated that it leaves young bionicle fans deprived like a spec script with a bionicle veneer might have. From every angle, Mask of Light is a totally genuine product that still holds water when revisited as an adult, no nostalgia goggles required.
Still a great movie. Call it nostalgia glasses, but I believe it. I always loved the spiritual aspect of Bionicle movies. If they weren’t mechanical, this would be like other fantasy stories. They are united by their duty to their creator and his world world, who guides them to meet their destiny. Even the Makuta realized that in the end.
Visuals hold. Script holds. I can see how cheap it is for the time, but its so well directed it just works. The action is exciting, the characters interesting. You never realize how good things are as a kid.
This is so nostalgic that I am genuinely shedding tears right now I love the characters so much and the music brings me right back to when I was a child

Agreed! Such deep stories/lore for a kid's toy. My best friend and I combined had all the sets. We'd spend countless hours making our own 'stories' with the characters.
When I first saw this at age 3 in my hometown of Pheonix, AZ I was both scared and excited to be introduced to such characters and storytelling. I am now 18 and I have learned that the voicover actors who voiced the characters from MLP Friendship Is Magic, Stormhawks, Slugterra, and much more voiced the Toa and Matoran in all the BIONICLE films. I'm definitely getting a Unity, Duty, Destiny tattoo as my first one, Bionicle made such an impact in my childhood, plus it is just a plain cool symbol and motto at a glance without knowing anything about Bionicle
@@EsplodingBomb it automatically makes you look cool. It's a motto we all need right now. "Unity" to bring ourselves together. "Duty" to do what we must. And "destiny" to make it worthwhile.

This is a true cinematic masterpiece, the Bionicle movies have so much lore and plot its amazing
I mean, not a masterpiece, the ending is sooo rushed, and it kinda ruins the whole movie. But a really nostalgic and heartwarming one for sure
Man, seeing Jaller, Hahli and Hewkii together with official voices just makes me wish we got an Inika movie even more!

If you remember this movie as a kid you are a legend. A lot of other people don’t like these movies but they made our childhood
57:59 Love how he slams the bike directly into the door with Hahli still inside and is only slightly surprised she's there never mind dead
For a bike made from Rahkshi remains, that thing's pretty durable!
Considering what the Ussalnui is made of, it's pretty sturdy.

I always liked the ice toa. Dope look
