Turns out she was the only one who could calm me down when I was on the brink of losing it. She could make me laugh about almost anything. The next year she decided to let me listen to this song, said that I was her citrus friend. We only got closer after that. One day she had to leave. I never got to tell her that I loved her. It’s been a few years now. And today I remembered this song. After all this time I’m still that citrus friend, but I have no one to mow the lawn with now.

Lemon Boy is a character that was developed by Skinner. He said that “Lemon Boy is the anxiety, the negativity, the illness that’s inside all of us, and that is very strong inside me. A way of being happy for me is disassociating myself from those things, but also learning to live alongside them as a friend. I really hate Lemon Boy sometimes but he’s never going away, and I can use him for good.” Basically, Lemon Boy is a personification of mental health struggles such as anxiety and depression. Everyone has a Lemon Boy in their mind, or as the song refers to it, their garden, at some point in their life. Many people may pull theirs out before he really “takes root” and for others he may pop up occasionally like a weed and not stay for too long. The line, “Lemon Boy and me started to get along together,” means that the “host” of lemon boy is falling deeper into the abyss of him and letting him take more control. Robin says how he helped lemon boy “plant his seeds” of negativity. As lemon boy starts rubbing off on him, he begins affecting him in different ways, one being his friends leaving or distancing themselves from him because they don’t know how to help. Later in the song, the lyric, “So Lemon Boy and me, we just gotta get along together,” reveals the reality of depression and mental illness. It’s less about conquering and more about compromising, you need to be able to work alongside it sometimes. In the end, mental illnesses don’t define the person who has them.

I always wondered what this song was about. I came up with a lot of different theories and then one day it finally hit me, so here is what I believe the song to be about:
Lemon boy is a part of him. It's the part of him that he always thought would be hard to love because it's cynical, depressed, and "bitter". But one day, instead of trying to deny this part of himself, he embraces it and shows it compassion and thus becomes friends with lemon boy.
But his friends don't seem to understand and they leave because they haven't learned to love the bitter parts of themselves.
And he also worries about whether or not he will always be able to love the bitter parts of himself too. But he acknowledges that it's inevitable that there will be tough days, and times when he might not like lemon boy so much. And that's okay. In the end he realizes that it is better to befriend his own inner flaws and demons because ultimately, they are every bit a part of him as all the positive aspects are. And it is better to love your flaws and accept them, than it is to constantly hate yourself for them 🍋
I personally felt that this song talked about friendship and things like that. I think it's pretty interesting how music/poetry can mean different things to people. Also nice theory.

This song in my opinion is talking about depression or that inner self that is mean to you bad thoughts etc. In the beginning you try to get rid of it but cant so you grow on to it and see it as a second self a second insecure you. It may be hard at first but you get used to it and like having a friend always by your side even through he can be mean sometimes. In the end of the song he is afraid that lemon boy might disapear and is sad about that because if he loses him he loses part of himself. And in the last lyrics he says that he and lemon boy are going to live forever. I believe lemon boy/ depression can get better from time to time and learn to be happy. Its like the sad part of us that we have to confort and see as a friend. Thank you to anyone who read this lol hope you all doing great♡

Similar to your explanation, I think that lemon boy is depression, and at first we try to get rid of it, but get accustomed to it. And later on when the singer tries to show, or let out their feelings about depression to their friends, they leave. And so it's only lemon boy and the singer left. The singer sees their depression as just a part of them, and like you said, are scared to see it go away, because if it goes away so does a part of them.
And so the quote, "lemon boy and I are gonna live forever" shows that the singer hopes that his depression and him will always be together.
Truly a sad, but relatable song to jam to.

The artist had deppresion and at 1st he wanted to get rid of it. But he ended up letting it be apart of him and accepting it. (If I am wrong correct me tho)
