I love SNK and their characterization. The cast in their universe grow and expand as actual characters with every game. They were never treated like static filler for action, but as actual characters who grew, changed, lived and often died as games came and went. Even their fighting styles matured over time. Plus they made certain that the areas you fought had a ton of personality as well to give the fights and moments from these stories more weight and personality as well. Compare that to Capcom's mostly static cast (ex. Ryu). SNK's characters have "soul" in every fiber of their creation.
***** I'm talking about fighting games. Also, I actually agree with you about Street Fighter vs. X-Men. Aside from the ridiculous infinites, I feel it was one of Capcom's better fighting games in terms of color, presentation, animation, gameplay and overall energy. JJBA is extremely impressive too! Also, I've never played it but I also hear that the Darkstalkers series was pretty good. I've played the Street Fighter series and I can tell you it's inferior to SNKs King of Fighters and Fatal Fury series. 3rd Strike has little redeeming qualities but for its truly phenomenal spritework (MOTW is better in every other way). Alpha 2 or Alpha 3 is probably the best in the SF series in terms of gameplay and that isn't saying much when compared to SNK's stable of fighters. The fact is, KOF98/UM/FE, KOF2K2/UM, MOTW, RBFF, RBFF2, LB1, LB2, and SS2 are by far more polished than _anything_ Capcom has ever done, including their VS series.
***** I've never played KOF 14 but I was disappointed in what I saw. To be fair, though, I do have a bias toward 2d. Artistically, it looks much, much, MUCH better.
+JC Ace ! I dunno about KOFXIV lacking story, but aside from Hero Team's (China) and AOF Team's boring endings, most endings are quite enjoyable especially the Special Invites Team and Yagami Team. And the cliffhanger made me more excited about the next title because of prominent return of some old characters who died in their story arcs.

The Best ending out of all the kof 96 endings were Iori, mature, and vice team ending at the very end. KOF 96 was my favorite kof and still play it til this day. I know KOF 97 is most popular in China, but 96 is more fun in my opinion.
